That night, my stomach started acting up again. Bad. I was curled up on the floor, couldn't even get a word out.
Then I heard the door unlock.
Dax walked in and our eyes locked. I kicked myself internally for not changing the locks sooner.
He froze, took one look at my face, and rushed over. Grabbed me by the arm and yanked me up, his voice all sharp and angry. "You're already sick, and you're sitting on the cold floor?"
First time he'd ever raised his voice at me. And it was because I was in pain.
I stared right into his eyes. The worry in them didn't look fake.
I knew he loved me—as well as someone else.
My heart stuttered for a second—until I caught the scent of perfume on him.
"Since when do you wear such sweet perfume?" I asked, my voice flat.
A flicker of panic crossed his face. He bounced back real quick. "Well, this client's a big deal. Had to dress the part."
"Male or female?" I pressed.
He forced a smile, all unnatural. "Male."
I didn't say anything. He took my hand, all eager and pleading. "I swear, it's a guy. Since when do you ask these questions anyway?"
I pulled my hand back, cold and distant. "Won't happen again."
His eyes went wide. He pulled me into his chest, holding on tight. "Blair, I'm sorry. I swear, I'll never leave you alone when you're scared again. And don't ever say that word again—'breakup'. Please."
I couldn't see his face. Just felt his arms squeeze tighter.
I didn't push him away. Just said, quiet and flat, "Dax, I saw everything.
"The chats. Between you and her. I saw them all."
I felt his heartbeat speed up against my ear.
