Chapter Three

Chapter Three By the time I made it outside to the bus stop, I had missed the last bus. Of course, living in the middle of nowhere means that any public transport to get home varied, and annoyingly, The last bus wasn’t long after the end of school bell.  Never normally an issue… unless I miss it.  I’d have no choice, I’d have to get a taxi, but it's going to be stupidly expensive. Groaning, I pulled my phone out of my pocket and checked the taxi app.  Nothing for another hour.  Of course. Of - f*****g - course.  I went ahead and ordered it anyway and made my way back to the school. I’d just have to sit on the steps until it gets here. Throwing my bag down, i sat and started my long wait.  ‘Julie?’ Someone shouted. I looked around and saw Mr Taylor. He was coming out the doors, carrying two big boxes and some books… that looked like they were going to tip over any second. ‘Can you give me a hand please?’  I stood up and rushed over to him before anything had a chance to fall over.  ‘Yeah sure’. I took the books for him. He smiled and thanked me. ‘No problem. Where do you need me to carry them to?’  ‘My car. Follow me’. He went ahead and I followed behind. We walked towards the faculty parking. ‘Did you get my note?’  ‘Yeah, I was going to come and see you tomorrow morning. Thought you’d be gone by now’. He chuckled and shook his head.  ‘Unfortunately not, I had a lot of extra work to mark, Shouldn’t you be home by now?’ I sighed.  ‘Nope. Unfortunately not’ I stole his words, which rewarded me another chuckle. ‘I missed my bus. Gotta wait a while for a taxi home now’.  ‘A taxi? That would be pricy’. I shrugged.  ‘Don’t have a choice, there’s no way to get back otherwise.’  We had arrived at his car. He put the boxes down on the floor and opened the boot. I dumped the books inside and grabbed one of the boxes while he grabbed the other.  ‘I can give you a ride if you want?’ He suggested. I c****d an eyebrow, Is he allowed to do that? ‘I mean, you were so kind as to not set me back two weeks if I dropped all this stuff’. I couldn’t help but smile. ‘Isn’t that inappropriate?’ I joked casually. This time, he shrugged.  ‘Our secret’.  ‘Sure. Thanks, It will save me a fortune and time’. He closed the boot and gestured me to get in. I did and pulled my seat belt on. Cancelling the taxi, i stuffed my phone back in my bag as Mr Taylor got in and we headed off.  -- We were about 20 minutes in to the journey and the only thing breaking the silence between us was the rain on the windscreen. I liked it, It was relaxing. I sighed, happily and looked at the window.  ‘Gotta love winter, Am I right?’ I looked over at Mr Taylor, Confused. ‘The rain?’  ‘Oh, No, I do love it, it's peaceful’.  ‘I wasn’t being sarcastic’. He grinned.  ‘Thank you for giving me a ride home, I know it's pretty far out your way’. He shook his head. ‘What?’  ‘It's not’.  ‘It's 45 minutes away from the school’. I was more than surprised when he just chuckled. ‘What?’  ‘It might be, but I only live about 10 minutes away from your house so, it really isn’t’. He lived that close? ‘I see you waiting for the bus every day on my drive to school’. He looked over at me for a second before turning his attention back on the road.  ‘Oh’. Was all i said. I guess you learn something new every day.
