Something I Need to Tell You

1417 Words
Mitchell has been moved to the recovery room, and it's been three hours since the middle-aged man's surgery was completed. However, there were still no signs of him waking up, adding to his daughter's worry. "Dad, wake up, please. Alyssa misses you. I want to hear your voice. I want to see your smile," Alyssa murmured as she held Mitchell's hand. For the past three hours, Alyssa has been sitting by her father's bedside, refusing to move anywhere, claiming she wants to be there when her father opens his eyes. Meanwhile, her uncles, aunts, and in-laws have already gone home as it's getting late. They agreed to leave because of Brent's insistence. Thinking of Brent, Alyssa wonders where he might be. It was about 30 minutes since Brent disappeared from Alyssa's sight. However, Alyssa has to content herself with suppressing her curiosity for now. "Alyssa?" Finally, the moment arrives. The one person who has almost dominated Alyssa's thoughts since earlier is here. Brent enters the room with a slightly different appearance. His once neatly buttoned navy blue shirt is now disheveled. The sleeves are rolled up to his elbows, revealing his muscular arms. Brent's hair also looks tousled. It's unlike a few hours ago when he suddenly appeared and unexpectedly proposed to Alyssa. Wait, can that even be called a proposal? Alyssa wondered inwardly. She's starting to confuse herself now. Oh well. Alyssa didn't want to dwell on it any further. It's better to just enjoy the rare sight now. Brent looks a thousand times more handsome despite his messy hair and shirt. Heck, he even looks sexy. Crazy! What are you thinking?! Alyssa scolds herself as she realizes her wild imagination. "Alyssa?" Brent calls. "Yes?" Alyssa responded quickly. "What's wrong with you? Are you feeling sick?" Brent asks as he arranges some food he bought. Alyssa shook her head. "No. Why do you ask?" She replies, puzzled. "Because your face is red," Brent answers casually before moving on. Stupid! Once again, Alyssa curses herself inwardly. She really doesn't understand herself today. Why is she so keen on embarrassing herself? Especially in front of Brent. The man who has just become her husband. "Alyssa?" Brent calls again, but Alyssa still doesn't respond as she's too preoccupied with her inner turmoil. "Alyssa?" “Alyssa Grace Mitchell?” Brent called Alyssa by her full name. This time, his efforts paid off. “Yes?” Alyssa responded. “Save the dirty thoughts for later. Let’s eat first,” Brent said, successfully leaving Alyssa stunned. It seemed Alyssa's suspicion was correct. Brent indeed had the skill to read other people’s minds. ... Despite being overwhelmed with embarrassment, Alyssa finally obeyed Brent's command. She got up and approached Brent, who was waiting for her on the sofa in the middle of the treatment room, facing the bed where Mitchell was lying. In front of Brent, she sat down and looked at all the food laid out on the table. “I didn’t know what you liked, so I bought several dishes so you could choose,” Brent said after Alyssa sat down. “I’m not picky about food,” Alyssa replied. Glancing at Alyssa briefly, Brent continued, “No specific allergies?” “Yes, seafood,” Alyssa answered. “Okay.” After the brief conversation, Alyssa and Brent fell silent again. They were both busy with their meals, although Alyssa occasionally stole a glance at the handsome man. Alyssa tried to act as normally as possible. She tried to get used to Brent being around her, because, after all, he was now her husband. However, it wasn’t as easy as she thought. She still felt awkward. Sometimes she was also confused about how to behave in front of Brent. “Why are you looking at me?” Brent suddenly asked. “Uhuuk!” Alyssa choked in surprise. Brent quickly handed her a bottle of mineral water with the cap already off. “Thank you,” Alyssa said after soothing her throat with the water. “Hem,” Brent mumbled. “Don’t think about weird stuff while eating,” Brent added. “I’m not thinking about weird stuff!” Alyssa retorted. Alyssa’s face turned as red as a boiled crab. She was really embarrassed. “Oh, really?” Brent asked skeptically. One of his eyebrows raised, and it made him look even more handsome and sexy, Alyssa thought. “I’m not thinking dirty thoughts either!” Alyssa exclaimed, trying to dismiss her mind’s wanderings. It was truly embarrassing. “Okay,” Brent replied flatly. However, his lips curved into a faint smirk. Whether it was just her imagination or Brent had indeed become annoying, Alyssa couldn’t tell. Earlier, she was sure that Brent acted like a wise and dignified man. But now, his image had drastically changed. He seemed to enjoy watching Alyssa struggle to explain herself. Tuk! “Ow!” Alyssa yelped when she felt a flick on her forehead. “Don’t daydream. Finish your food!” ordered Brent, the one who flicked Alyssa's forehead. Pouting, Alyssa resumed eating her dinner, which now tasted bland. Alyssa’s appetite was completely ruined. Not only because of her father’s condition, but also because of Brent’s indirect teasing. Yes, she knew. She shouldn’t blame Brent because he wasn’t really at fault. Brent was just trying to remind Alyssa, whose brain sometimes didn't cooperate. “I know you probably don’t have an appetite right now. But you still have to eat because, no matter what, you, I…” Brent intentionally paused, successfully catching Alyssa’s attention. Alyssa’s round eyes were fully focused on Brent. She stared at him, full of curiosity. “You, I... we need to stay healthy so we can take care of your dad,” Brent said sincerely. We? Alyssa kept repeating that word in her mind. She wanted to make sure she had really heard it from Brent Jordan Davis. Alyssa’s heartbeat became erratic again, as if flipping around just because she heard Brent say “we.” Overreacting, right? Understandable, since in her 21 years, Alyssa had never been close to a male, let alone involved in a romance like other girls. So now, seeing Brent and his seemingly sweet behavior, she was flustered. “Y-yes,” Alyssa replied after a moment. Alyssa couldn’t muster any other response as her tongue was tied. Brent’s calm, gentle words stirred her heart, making her a person of few words. How sad. “Alyssa? Alyssa?” “Huh? What?!” Alyssa was daydreaming again. Brent had to call her several times to snap her out of it. “Your dad is awake. I’m going to call the doctor,” Brent said, then stood up and left the room. “Dad?” The girl, wearing a long-sleeved turtleneck, immediately approached Mitchell’s bed. She saw Mitchell, who had opened his eyes and was smiling weakly at her. “Dad!” Alyssa exclaimed, kissing the back of her father’s hand. Tears streamed down the 21-year-old girl’s face. Alyssa was truly grateful that her father had finally opened his eyes. Her father was back in her embrace. “Daaad!” Alyssa sobbed. “Don’t cry anymore. Your dad is okay now,” Brent whispered calmly and deeply. Oh, my God! Why does Brent have to be this sweet? Alyssa screamed in her mind. Today, Brent had really made her heart race. It had only been less than a day. What about the days to come? Would Alyssa be able to face the days with Brent by her side? Would she be able to handle every surprise and unexpected behavior from Brent? Hopefully, Alyssa could. If not, she could just wave to the camera. But before Alyssa could further process her feelings, Brent suddenly leaned in closer and whispered softly in her ear, “There’s something I need to tell you. Something that might change everything.” Alyssa looked at Brent in confusion, her heart pounding even faster. “What do you mean?” Brent took a deep breath, his gaze now serious. “It’s about my future, and it’s very important.” Alyssa felt her blood turn cold. What was Brent about to reveal? What big secret was he hiding? Alyssa could only stare, her emotions a mix of curiosity and anxiety. What was really going on? What was Brent hiding from her? And why did he seem so urgent? Alyssa felt that whatever she was about to hear next, her life would never be the same. To be continued...
