CHAPTER 4
KAI'S POV
How disgusting, calling me sweetheart? I don't even have Adrian's number. Where on earth is he?
"hey dude, I'm Adrian's best friend Ash... I can even call him right away if you want" the shorter one said.
"I don't care" I said
"calm down sweetheart" another said.
I rolled my eyes at the "sweetheart" comment, still frowning. "Ash, huh? Alright, call him. Tell him his house is being invaded by strangers."
Ash pulled out his phone and dialed Adrian's number, putting it on speaker. The phone rang a few times before Adrian's voice came through. "Ash, what's up?"
Ash grinned. "Dude, you've got a situation here. We've got a... um... feisty girl guarding your house, and she won't let us in."
Adrian's chuckle echoed through the phone. "Kai, let them in. They're friends."
I sighed, exasperated. "Fine. But if anything goes missing, they're yours."
The group snorted, and Ash said, "Don't worry, Kai. We won't steal anything... probably."
I stepped aside, gesturing grandly. "Welcome to the madhouse, boys. Make yourselves at home."
As they filed in, I couldn't help but notice the curious glances they kept shooting me. I glared back, daring them to say something.
Ash clapped Adrian's lanky friend on the back. "This is Leo, Mike, and Jake. And I'm Ash."
I nodded, still wary. "Kai. Now, what exactly are you here for?"
Leo spoke up, "We're here for Adrian's gaming gear. We've got a tournament tonight."
I raised an eyebrow. "Gaming? Adrian's into that?"
Ash chuckled. "Dude's a legend. You'll see."
As they started gathering gear, I watched, arms crossed. This was getting interesting. Just then Adrian walked in....
"dude you didn't tell me you're into girls like her, I mean what about Valerie?" the Ash guy said immediately Adrian walked in.
I felt a smirk creep onto my face as Adrian's eyes met mine, a warning glare flashing in their depths. "Ash, shut it," he muttered, dropping his keys on the table.
Ash grinned, clearly enjoying the drama. "What? I'm just saying, Valerie's gonna flip when she sees this."
Adrian shot him a look that could kill. "Kai's staying here temporarily. She's got a concussion, okay?"
Leo, Mike, and Jake exchanged looks, their eyebrows raised. "Concussion? Dude, what happened?" Mike asked.
Adrian sighed, rubbing the back of his head. "Long story. Just... let's just get the gear and go, okay?"
I rolled my eyes, pushing off the wall. "Yeah, because that's not suspicious at all. 'Oh, she's just staying here temporarily... with a concussion... in your house... alone...'"
Ash chuckled, earning a glare from Adrian. "Hey, we're just trying to understand the situation. You're usually more responsible, dude."
Adrian's expression turned stern. "Ash, focus. Gear. Now."
The group laughed, but they started gathering their stuff. As they filed out, Ash clapped Adrian on the back. "We'll catch up later, dude. And Kai? Nice work... not burning the house down."
I smiled sweetly. "Thanks. I have my moments."
As the door closed, Adrian turned to me, a mix of amusement and exasperation on his face. "You okay?"
I nodded, shrugging. "Yeah. Your friends are... interesting."
He chuckled, shaking his head. "They're something, alright." Adrian's gaze lingered on me for a moment, like he was checking if I was really okay. "So, how was it, dealing with Ash and the gang?"
I shrugged, plucking at the hem of his shirt I was still wearing. "They're entertaining. Ash seems like the type to get into trouble."
Adrian laughed, low and rough. "That's an understatement. He's the one who usually drags me into trouble."
I raised an eyebrow, curious. "And Valerie? How does she fit into all this?"
His expression shifted, something like caution creeping in. "Val's... Val's been my girlfriend since we were kids. We're solid."
I nodded, nonchalant. "Sounds like a plan."
Adrian's eyes narrowed, like he was trying to read me. "You don't have to pretend to be okay with it, Kai. If you're uncomfortable—"
I cut him off, a little too quickly. "I'm fine. Why would I care?"
The air hung for a beat, and for a second, I thought I saw something flicker in Adrian's eyes. But it was gone, replaced by a smooth smile. "Good. I'll get you that contact info for the café job. You want to start tomorrow?"
I nodded, a spark of determination igniting. "Yeah. I need to get things sorted."
As he pulled out his phone, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of... something. Maybe it was just the bruise on my head. Yeah, that was it.
Adrian handed me a piece of paper with the café owner's details. "Alright, got it. Her name's Sam. Mention my name, and she'll sort you out."
I tucked the paper into my pocket, a plan forming. "Thanks, Ken. I owe you one."
He raised an eyebrow. "Just don't burn the café, okay?"
I grinned, wily. "I'll try my best."
ADRIAN'S POV
When I got Ash's call I knew Kai was causing trouble, so I had to rush back home. But it was a good thing it was all settled and for the first in twenty four hours I've known her she actually listened.
Days went by fast, no report from Sam concerning Kai which was good.
It was already time for school, being the most popular guy in school actually is a hard work but with Valerie by my side it was totally okay.
Kai was gone before I woke, I wonder where she had gone to. When I got to school and settled down, the teacher worked in with a new student... But I didn't look to see who it was.
"settle down class we've got a new student, Kai Moore" my eyes shoot up immediately... I was so shocked. Kai!!!
My eyes locked onto the teacher, my mind racing. Kai? As in, the Kai? The one who's been crashing at my place? The one who's been driving me crazy with her antics?
The teacher continued, "Kai's transferring from... um... another school. Let's make her feel welcome, everyone."
The classroom erupted in a chorus of murmurs and whispers, but I was stuck on one thought: Kai's in my school?
Valerie's hand slipped into mine, a questioning look on her face. I matted a smile, trying to process this new development. What was Kai thinking, transferring to my school? And what was with the whole "Moore" thing? Was that her last name?
As the teacher gestured for Kai to come forward, I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. She walked in, hair tied back, eyes scanning the room like she was sizing up the competition. When her gaze landed on me, a flicker of... was that amusement?
Valerie leaned in, whispering, "What is she doing here ?"
"What do mean?" I asked, but she didn't say anything. Not in front of the class, at least. How should I know how Kai got here in the first place?
Kai made her way to the empty desk beside me, a mischievous gl gleaming in her eye. "Hey, Ken," she whispered, plumping down into her seat. "Small world, huh?"
I shot her a look, trying to warn her. What was she playing at?
The teacher cleared her throat, launching into the lesson, but my mind was elsewhere. Kai was in my school. This was gonna be interesting.
As Kai settled in beside me, Valerie's grip on my hand tightened. I could feel the tension radiating from her, like a ticking time bomb. Her eyes flicked to Kai, then back to me, her expression a mask of calm curiosity.
But I knew Valerie too well. She was seething. The way her smile didn't quite reach her eyes, the way her voice was a little too sweet when she turned to me and whispered, "So, Adrian, you said she was just staying with you temporarily?"
I swallowed, trying to gauge her mood. "Yeah, Val, I—"
Kai piped up, "Hey, Ken, can I borrow a pen?"
Valerie's gaze snapped to Kai, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Oh, I'm sure Adrian has a pen you can borrow. He's always so... accommodating."
The air was thick with tension, and I knew I had to defuse it. Fast. "Yeah, sure, Kai. Here."
As I handed Kai a pen, our fingers touched, and Valerie's eyes narrowed.
Kai, oblivious to the tension, smiled sweetly and whispered, "Thanks, Ken."
