JUST A FRIEND

CHAPTER 11 ADRIAN'S POV Valerie looked up at me, her eyes narrowing slightly. "I'm fine." she answered I stared at her for a moment and sighed. She is beginning to frustrate me with her possessive behavior. I mean Kai was not even trying to get my attention and I am not into Kai, she is just some one I'm comfortable with. A friend.... Why can't she just understand that and stop being paranoid. I looked at Valerie, trying to mask my frustration. "Val, seriously? You're gonna give me the silent treatment thing?" I shook my head slightly, focusing on packing up my stuff. "You know I'm not into Kai like that. She's just a friend, okay?" Valerie's expression didn't change, but I could tell she wasn't buying it fully. I sighed, trying to keep my cool. "Let's just talk about this later, 'kay? I gotta get to class." I said, trying to brush it off. I leaned in, my lips brushing against Valerie's in a soft, gentle kiss. "Trust me, okay?" I whispered against her lips. Valerie's expression softened slightly, and she nodded. "Okay." I smiled, pulling back. "Good. Now let's get to class before we're late ." We walked out of the classroom, my arm around her shoulders, trying to ease the tension. As we walked, Valerie leaned into me slightly, her mood seeming to lift. "Sorry for being extra, babe. I just... saw that scene with Kai and Edward and it hit me." I squeezed her shoulder. "No need to be sorry. Just talk to me, okay? I'm not going anywhere." Valerie smiled up at me. "Promise?" I smiled back. "Promise ." We kept walking, the tension from earlier dissipating. After school Valerie left early saying she was supposed to meet up with her parents before they leave for their vacation. Ash, Leo and I decided to go back to my house for some games. Ash kept going on and about the new girl he was dating. I mean this guy is really crazy, he is always with a different girl every week. Sometimes I wonder how he became my best friend. We walked into my house, dropping our bags by the door. Ash was already mid-story, talking about "the most amazing lips" and "eyes that just stopped him in his tracks". Leo chuckled, plumping down on the couch. "Dude, you're gonna run out of weeks in the year at this rate ." Ash grinned, unfapologetic. "Hey, I'm a connoisseur. I gotta keep the streak going!" I shook my head, laughing. "You know you're gonna get 'the talk' one day. Like, actual trouble." Ash winked. "Bring it on. I'm ready ." Leo snorted. "More like, the girls are gonna bring it on. Like, actual drama." "that reminds me Adrian, do you hear about the latest gist in school?" Ash asked, I frown in confusion. Valerie was practically glue to me the whole day, she didn't even let me move around. "What knew gist?" I asked "Edward Cole, he publicly asked Kai to date in the Cafeteria today." I stared at him in shock.... Edward asked Kai out? Is he kidding me.. "That's right. It's the talk of the school right now... Everybody finds his proposal very romantic" Leo said making Ash rolled his eyes. "It wasn't a proposal, and it was far from being romantic. It think it's pretty lame and old fashioned" Ash said with a scoff. "What ever. the point is Kai accepted, but I don't trust that guy. Edward might just be using her" Leo said and he was right. Edward Cole is no one to trust and I won't let him hurt Kai. I stared at Ash and Leo, the news hitting me like a punch. Edward asked Kai out? Like, the same Edward that's been distant and cold for years? And Kai said yes? I leaned back, trying to process this. Kai's my friend, and I don't want to see her get hurt. "wait, hold up...kai said yes? " Ash nodded. "yes, she was pretty excited." Leo frowned. "Yeah, and now everyone's talking about how romantic it was. Ugh."I clenched my fist in frustration. I shook my head slightly. "That asshole, he is trying to hurt. I won't let that happen" Ash snorted. "You sound like you're protecting her, Ad." I raised an eyebrow. "I'm protecting her from a potential disaster." Ash scoffed giving me a look. "You are totally into Kai aren't you?" Ash asked, his eyes narrowed. I glared at him immediately. "Are you Crazy? I have a girlfriend do you forget that" Leo chuckled "we know that bro. But with Kai around you've been acting different and protective and don't tell me you are just trying to be a good friend" Leo said. I frown "I have no idea what you're talking about, come on let start the game already" I said trying to stop the conversation. But my mind was on Edward and kai. Why the heck did she say yes, after everything I told her. "Are you sure..?" I shot Ash a warning look, hoping to kill the topic. "Dude, I'm with Valerie. End of story." Ash raised his hands, grinning. "Alright, alright. Drop it." Leo chuckled, starting the game console. "Sure, sure. Let's play." I focused on the game, but my mind wandered to Kai and Edward. Why did she say yes? Doesn't she know his rep. The controllers got my attention for a bit, but the thoughts lingered. I needed to talk to Kai, make sure she's okay. KAI'S POV The cold water fall on my skin making me let out a sigh of relief. God! This feels so good. After all that work at the Cafe I really deserve this relaxing time to myself. Plus I went in search of a house today, it did not go very well but I will try again tomorrow. I will just have ask Ms Sam for a day off. I let the warm water soak into my skin, feeling the tension melt away. A day off sounds like just what I need. Maybe I'll even treat myself to some ice cream later . As I washed my hair, my mind wandered to the scene in the cafeteria. Edward asking me out... I smiled slightly. Surprising, but... maybe it'll be fun. I rinsed off, grabbing a towel. Time to get dressed and figure out what to wear. On getting to my room I was startled seeing Adrian sitting on my bed waiting. I yanked the towel tighter around me, cheeks burning. "Adrian what the f**k?" I yelled, mostly at myself for not locking the door. He shot up from my bed like he got electrocuted, hands up, eyes fixed on the wall. "I... I'm so sorry, I didn't mean—" "Save it you perverted freak!" I snapped, cutting him off. My voice came out harsher than I meant, but damn, my heart was still racing. I heard him shuffle behind me. "Kai, I swear I didn't mean to intrude! I knocked, but you didn't answer..." Yeah right. I rolled my eyes even though he couldn't see me. "Out. Now. Door's that way." The door clicked shut behind him. Silence. I exhaled and leaned against the wall, towel still clutched to my chest. Great. Just great. What the hell was Adrian even doing in my room anyway? Gosh!! Adrian Reyes!! I slapped my cheeks, trying to cool them down. "Get it together, Kai," I muttered. What the hell WAS he doing in here? Adrian doesn't just waltz into people's rooms. And guilty? He looked like a kid caught stealing cookies, not like someone who just made a mistake and walked out. Ugh. My face was still on fire. First Edward's cafeteria stunt, then this. Today was going so well. I pulled on a t-shirt and shorts with way more force than necessary. Stupid i***t thing—my heart. Why was it still racing like I just ran a marathon? It's Adrian. Annoying, nosy Adrian. The guy who acts like my self-appointed bodyguard against Edward. Nothing more. "Right," I told the mirror, combing through my wet hair. "Nothing more." I yanked the door open, ready to give him a piece of my mind. He was leaning against the wall outside, staring at his shoes like they offended him. "Alright, explain," I crossed my arms. "What were you doing in my room, Adrian?" "I'm so sorry I came in like that" he looked really sorry. I stared at him for a moment and sighed "so why were you in my room in the first place?" I asked "I wanted us to talk about Edward" Okay here it comes, Adrian the body guard about to give me safety rules. TBC
