CHAPTER 9
ADRIAN'S POV
I don't know if it was just jealous but I have never seen or heard Valerie say something so unkind to anyone. I know she doesn't really like Kai but she was totally out of line.
After school I decided to talk to Kai. Samantha told me told me Kai was taking the day off today. I wonder if she is okay after what Valerie did. Yes I haven't known Kai for a long time and I don't know much about her but she is the first person that I have lived with ever since my parents death. The house is big and empty, always silent but with Kai around it felt more like home and I also enjoy her company a lot even though she can be so Kai sometimes.
I pulled up to the house, hoping she'd talk to me. The house kind of quiet, did she maybe go out to meet that jerk, Edward again?. I knocked on her door, and after a moment, she opened it, she gave me a question look.
"Hey," she said, stepping aside to let me in. I walked in and sit on the bed.
"Not going to the Cafe?" I asked, trying to sound casual. She shrugged, flumping onto the couch.
"Didn't feel like it." I stare at her, studying her expression.
"Valerie was out of line today," I said, trying to gauge her reaction. Kai's gaze flicked to mine, a hint of amusement in her eyes.
"Yeah, she's got issues." I chuckled, feeling a bit relieved she wasn't dwelling on it.
"She has not always been like that. I'm sure she doesn't mean what ever she said" I said, she rolled her eyes. Of course she did...
"You don't have to defend her I got it. By the way she's not completely wrong. You have helped me a lot. You let me stay in your house and you even got me a job. I would be jealous seeing my boyfriend doing all that for another if I were in Valerie's position. I don't want to be the reason why you guys fight. I can see that you really like, you really shouldn't give her reasons to doubt you " Kai's words hit me like a gut punch. I looked at her, surprised by her insight.
"You think that's what this is about?" I asked, my voice low.
Kai shrugged. "Maybe. But either way, I don't want to cause trouble between you two." She stood up, heading to the door. "I'm gonna grab a snack. You want anything?"
I followed her to the kitchen, leaning against the counter. "Kai, Valerie and I...it's complicated. You aren't the reason we fight." I paused, choosing my words carefully. "And I'm not gonna stop helping you just because of her."
Kai raised an eyebrow, a small smile playing on her lips. "You sure about that?. I mean your barbie girl is definitely going to throw some tantrums".
"She won't" I answered
The kitchen was silence for a moment, the quiet comfortable. "You know, the house feels different with you around," I said, breaking the silence. Kai looked at me, curious.
"Different how?" she asked. I shrugged, feeling a bit awkward.
"More...alive, I guess." Kai smiled, and for a moment, the emptiness in the house faded away. "after my parents passed away, I haven't let anyone stay here for this long. I guess I'm just very comfortable around you" I said
"I'm sorry about your parents" she said with a sympathetic look. I shrugged
"I'm over now. By the way tell me about you, I never got to ask you why you were in the middle of the road that raining day?" she looked up at me and sigh. She jumped up on the kitchen Island and sit.
"it's a long story actually. My mother died when I was five, so I lived with my step father and his son. Life wasn't really the best with them... That night my step father found out about the trust fund my mother had opened in my name, he took everything my mother saved up for my education and sent me out.... I had no where to go that was when you decided to run me over "she said the last with a smirk. I rolled my eyes, of course she just had to ruin the moment by reminding me how I knocked her out with my car.
Kai's story hit me like a ton of bricks. I winced, feeling a pang of guilt. "Damn, Kai. I'm sorry about everything you went through." I moved closer, stopping just short of the island.
She chuckled, a hint of sarcasm in her tone. "Yeah, life's been a party, hasn't it?" I couldn't help but laugh.
"Guess I owe you an apology for the car thing, huh?" I said, grinning. Kai's eyes sparkled with amusement.
"Apology accepted...if you buy me ice cream." I raised an eyebrow, laughing.
"Deal. But just ice cream, no more running in front of cars, okay?".
"Run in front of a car? You practically wanted to kill me" she said stubbornly, making me chuckled
"Yeah sure I did... Stop being so dramatic" Kai's face scratched in mock offense. "Dramatic? You hit me with your car, Adrian! I'm surprised I didn't become a hood ornament." I laughed, holding up my hands in surrender.
"Alright, alright. I was a terrible driver. Forgive me?" I asked, trying to sound pitiful. Kai's expression softened, a sly grin spreading across her face.
"Depends. What's the ice cream flavor?".
"Why don't you change into something let go out, then you can choose what ever flavor you want miss drama queen" I said with a grin. She jumped down and quickly ran beck to her room to change.
I texted Valerie back, trying to keep it brief. "Not now, Val. Deal with it later." I tossed my phone aside just as Kai walked back into the kitchen, looking like a different person.
Her hair was down, and she'd changed into a bright yellow hoody and baggy pants.
I raised an eyebrow, chuckling. "Yellow hoody and baggy pants? You trying to start a new trend?" I teased. Kai shot me a playful glare, adjusting her hood.
"Hey, this is my comfy vibe. Don't judge." I laughed, holding up my hands.
"I'm not judging, just admiring the...unique style ." Kai grinned, and we headed out, the night air filled with laughter and ice cream possibilities.
"But why yellow though, I thought most girls prefer pink?" I asked.
" I'm not most girls, plus Yellow's my favorite color," she said, catching me staring.
I grinned "Guess it's a good thing I like yellow too ." Kai rolled her eyes playfully.
"Let's go, ice cream awaits!" she said, heading for the door. I followed, feeling the tension in the air dissipate. For a night, at least, everything felt normal.
VALERIE'S POV
I can't believe it, Adrian ignored me for the first time and all because of that poor trash. She came out of nowhere trying to steal Adrian's attention from me? I can't let that happen. Adrian is mine and only I deserve to be with him.
I'm seething, watching Adrian and Kai walk out together like they're some cute couple. Who does she think she is? Adrian is MINE. I can't believe he's ignoring me for her.
I pull out my phone and text him. "You're making a mistake, Adrian. She's using you." But he doesn't even bother responding. Like, what? You're really choosing her over me?
My grip on the phone tightens. This isn't over, Kai. You think you can just wade in and steal Adrian from me? Newsflash, b***h: he's taken.
The next day at school I ignored Adrian. I'm sure that will surely make him come to me, he loves me more than anything. He ran after for years before I finally agreed.... I mean a lot to him.
"Val... Val!!" I heard him calling after me during lunch break but I ignored him. Just as I was about to walk in to the cafeteria he pulled me back.
"Val please talk to me" he said
"Adrian what do you want? You made it clear yesterday that your friendship with Kai is more important than our relationship...so stop bothering me" I said angrily
"come on Val, don't be like that. You know you very important to me. Kai is just a friend you know that, I just want you guys to get along. Please forgive me" I looked up at him, my expression icy.
"Get along?" I repeated, my voice low. "You expect me to get along with someone who's trying to steal you from me? No, Adrian. You need to choose: her or me."
Adrian's eyes widened, a hint of frustration creeping in. "Val, that's not fair. Kai's just a friend, I swear."
