Chapter 16 Searching

819 Words
After the devastating explosion, firefighters found a charred body. It was Gabriel's. Dominic took charge of her final arrangements, but Caleb was nowhere to be found. That day, Jasmine's familiarity with the surroundings, and the timer on her was broken. All these raised suspicions in Caleb's mind. Caleb thought of the hard drive Gabriel had given him. If he had only believed in Gabriel a little more, she would go into the operating room. She might still be alive. He blamed himself for her death. So, he asked someone to find the hard drive that he had thrown out of the window. He was also afraid to see the contents in it. He was afraid that what Gabriel had said was true—afraid it would contradict the image of Jasmine he had cherished in his heart.   This internal struggle left him in a state of decay.   In Gabriel's room, Caleb found a torn white dress—the same one he had torn apart that night. Clutching the dress against his chest, he felt the pain he had brought her. Enduring all the suffering, she must feel she would be better off dead.   Human beings are truly strange. When she was around, he had been unable to remember her scent, her preferences, or even her appearance. But after she was gone, he felt her presence in every aspect of his life.   Her absence made him feel that his heart was being shredded in a meat grinder. He smelt her scent in the air, caught her figure from time to time, and even hear her voice. Everything about her had seeped into his life. His moment of mourning was interrupted by a phone call.   “Mr. Williams, we searched the hospital thoroughly but couldn't find the hard drive. Someone else is also looking for it.”   “Find out who's behind them.” Caleb responded.   Jasmine was hiding outside the door. Seeing Caleb’s furious face through the door c***k, she became flustered. She had anticipated that Caleb would send people to find the hard drive, so she had to get it before he could. She had also made sure all evidence was destroyed.   She had executed her plan perfectly, except for one thing. The five kidnappers had contacted her. They had agreed to split the 100 million ransom between them, but Caleb was not easily fooled.   The cash he had given them had serial numbers, which could be traced by the police. “Jasmine, give us 10 million in three days. After we leave the country safe and sound, we’ll help you keep the secret. Or else, we will turn you over to the authorities.” Jasmine had spent all her money on hiring the kidnappers to kill Gaberial. There was no way for her to collect 10 million within three days. Her only option was to turn to Caleb.   Unexpectedly, she found Caleb clutching Gabriel's clothes, unwilling to let it go. Gabriel tormented him when she was alive. Now that she was gone, Caleb still missed her.   As Jasmine contemplated the situation, a sinister glint appeared in her eyes.   Meanwhile, Caleb was also thinking about something after received the phone call. He didn’t notice that Jasmine was standing behind him. She asked him cautiously, “Caleb, do you feel any regret for saving me?”   “I've told you. No one is allowed to get into this room,” he warned sternly.   “I'm sorry, I was just worried about you.” Jasmine responded, trying to mask her true intentions.   “I'm fine. Now, please leave. I need some time alone.” Caleb requested.   “There’s another thing.” “What? I’ve asked people to clean the villa in the suburb these days. You can move there if you don’t want to go home.” Jasmine understood that Caleb didn’t want to see her for a while. She requested, “I want to live in my sister Isabella’s villa. Can you give me the keys? I'll take care of the transfer procedures.” Caleb had been taking care of the villa after Isabella died. Jasmine was sick, so she didn’t have time to handle the transfer procedures. Caleb nodded, “I’ll send you the key and relevant information. Take care of yourself. I’ll help you with the transfer procedures.” “Thanks, Caleb.” Jasmine blinked her eyes, acting like a doll. “Do not be too sad about Gabriel's death. I'm here with you.” “Jasmine, I've always considered you to be like a sister.” His answer destroyed her hope. She had imagined that after Gabriel's death, Caleb would only focus on her. But it had never been like that. Upon Gabriel's passing, Caleb experienced a deeper sorrow than he had when Isabella died. It was as if his world had become an empty void, with no space for anyone else. This was Jasmine's greatest fear.
