“No, Caleb, I can't sign it. I can't divorce you. Please, listen to me! Isabella didn't commit suicide. Her sister Jasmine killed her. And those who r***d her were also Jasmine's friends.”
Gabriel pleaded as her tears streaming down her face. Her voice was hoarse. Her claim was not that convincing. She had no idea what else she could do to make him believe her.
“That's enough! You jumped off because you didn't want to help Jasmine. Now you’re slandering her? Gabriel, are you a monster? That should not be a surprise. A cold-hearted woman like you is still alive after jumping off the building.”
“Caleb, believe me, Jasmine confessed everything to me last night. Otherwise, why would I jump off the building for no reason?” Gabriel desperately tried to convince him.
“Caleb.” At that moment, Jasmine appeared at the door.
She was in a wheelchair which was propelled by a nurse.
“I heard that Gabriel fell in the hotel. I was worried about her. The doctor was heading here to check her health condition, so I followed them. Am I disturbing you, Gabriel?” Jasmine feigned concern for her condition.
“Doctor, this way.” Caleb glanced at Gabriel on the bed. He took over the wheelchair handle from the nurse and made way for the doctor.
Gabriel stared at Jasmine. What Jasmine said just now gave her an illusion that all those happened last night was just a dream.
Jasmine hid her true personality from Caleb, acting as a caring young girl. But Gabriel had witnessed Jasmine Lee's true madness.
Gabriel moved her fingers, lifted her bandaged arms, pointing at Jasmine. She then said word by word, “Caleb, trust me. She asked several men to r**e me. I was forced to jump off the hotel.”
“Mrs. Williams, please don’t move.” The doctor was measuring her blood pressure.
“Gabriel, why do you hate me? It's okay if you don’t want to help me. After all, the person who got ill is me. My life has nothing to do with you. But why are you making up lies to hurt me like this? Did I do anything that pissed you off?” Jasmin sobbed while defending herself.
“Caleb, why don’t you believe me? I’m telling the truth.”
“Where’s your evidence? Gabriel, I can sue you for defamation on her behalf.”
“No, Caleb. Gabriel must be panic. She needs time to recover.”
“Jasmine, you’re too kind to her.”
Too kind to me? Gabriel closed her eyes. She was so furious that she could not say a single word. My vision blurred with dark spots, and waves of nausea overwhelmed me. But nothing came out of her throat because she hadn’t had anything since yesterday morning.
The doctor removed the stethoscope and said, “She appears to be emotional because of what she ahd experienced. It's okay to have mood fluctuations.”
Then he turned around, saying, “By the way, Mr. Williams, the matching report is ready.”
“Explain it to me.” Caleb requested.
“It's negative, which means that your wife is a perfect match for the transplant," the doctor explained.
Gabriel was bewildered, unable to comprehend the sudden change in test results. “That’s impossible. I was told that I was not able to transplant my organ. Why is the result different?’
“I don’t know where you did the test before. But it’s negative after we examined your health condition.”
As the tension escalated, Williams's anger reached its peak. He confronted Gabriel, blaming her, “Gabriel, you really had done your homework to avoid the transplant.”
“Caleb, I didn’t know the result was incorrect. I had no idea.” Gabriel struggled to get up while explaining herself, making the bed shake.
“Gabriel, the doctor said that losing a kidney won’t affect your life. If you don’t want to give your kidney to me, I can wait for another person’s kidney. I’ll have the operation then.”
“Jasmine, go back to the ward.” Caleb pushed her wheelchair to the nurse and slammed the door.
She knew that he was angry about her.
In the blink of an eye, Caleb stood at her bed.
He forcefully held her chin, his voice laced with anger, “Gabriel, I underestimated you! You're responsible for Isabella’s death. If you committed suicide, that’s what you deserve. Now you showed me the fake test results just to avoid the kidney transplant for Jasmine. Who helped you with such audacity?”
Gabriel knew that nothing she said would make him believe her.
Suddenly, tears streamed down from the corners of her eyes nonstop.
She bit her lips hopelessly and looked into Caleb's eyes, managing to speak, “I didn't kill Isabella, it was Jasmine. Yes, I won't donate to her. I'd rather give my kidney to a stranger.”
“Just as Jasmine said, you refused to help her. Gabriel, anyone can refuse to help her, but you can’t.”
"What if I die?" Gabriel asked the painful question.
