The Monday after the Cultural Festival felt unusually quiet.
Although the excitement of the event had faded, students were still talking about the fireworks, the games, and the charity booth that had raised more donations than any other organization on campus.
Most of all, they talked about Midnight and Sabrina.
"They looked so good together."
"I saw them during the three-legged race."
"Did you notice how Midnight smiled?"
"I've never seen him smile before."
The rumors spread through every hallway of Westbridge University.
Neither Midnight nor Sabrina paid much attention to them.
At least, they tried not to.
---
Sabrina walked into the library carrying two novels she needed to return.
As she reached the front desk, she noticed Midnight sitting at their usual study table.
He was reading quietly, completely focused on his book.
She smiled.
"Good afternoon."
Midnight looked up.
"You're early."
"I know."
She sat across from him and placed two cups of coffee on the table.
"You've made this a habit," he said.
"I like bringing coffee."
"I've noticed."
She laughed.
"And you always pretend you don't expect it."
"...Maybe."
Her smile widened.
"Did you just admit something?"
"I said maybe."
"I'll take it."
For the first time, studying together didn't feel like tutoring.
It felt like two friends enjoying each other's company.
---
After an hour of reviewing economics, Sabrina stretched her arms.
"My brain is officially full."
"You've improved a lot."
"Thanks to my patient tutor."
"You worked hard."
She smiled softly.
"You always give me credit."
"You deserve it."
The words warmed Sabrina's heart.
Midnight rarely gave compliments.
When he did, she knew he meant every word.
---
Later that afternoon, Chloe rushed into the library.
"There you are!"
Sabrina looked up.
"What happened?"
"The Student Council just announced a music night this Friday."
"So?"
"You have to come."
Sabrina laughed.
"I can't sing."
"You don't have to."
Chloe glanced toward Midnight.
"You should come too."
Midnight calmly closed his notebook.
"I don't attend those events."
"You attended the Cultural Festival."
"That was work."
"This one is for fun."
"I'm busy."
Chloe sighed dramatically.
"You seriously need a social life."
Sabrina giggled.
"I've been telling him that for weeks."
Midnight looked at both of them.
"...I'll think about it."
Chloe smiled triumphantly.
"That's basically a yes."
---
Friday evening arrived.
The campus amphitheater was filled with students enjoying live acoustic performances.
Fairy lights decorated the trees, creating a warm and peaceful atmosphere.
To Sabrina's surprise...
Midnight actually came.
"You came."
"I said I'd think about it."
She laughed.
"And thinking brought you here."
"It seems so."
They found seats near the back where it was quieter.
For a while, they simply listened to the music.
Neither felt the need to fill the silence.
It was comfortable.
Natural.
---
Halfway through the program, Adrian walked over carrying three drinks.
"Mind if I join you?"
"Of course," Sabrina answered.
He handed her a fruit tea.
"I remembered you liked this."
"Thank you."
Midnight quietly accepted the coffee Adrian offered him.
"Thanks."
The conversation flowed easily.
They talked about classes, the festival, and upcoming exams.
Eventually, Adrian turned toward Sabrina.
"Can we talk for a minute?"
She looked surprised.
"Sure."
They walked a short distance away.
Midnight remained seated.
He told himself it didn't matter.
Yet his eyes followed them anyway.
---
Under a tree illuminated by fairy lights, Adrian took a deep breath.
"I've been wanting to tell you something."
Sabrina tilted her head.
"What is it?"
He smiled nervously.
"I know we haven't known each other for very long..."
She listened quietly.
"...but every time we've worked together, I've admired how kind you are."
Sabrina's smile slowly faded.
"I admire the way you care about people."
Adrian looked directly into her eyes.
"So..."
He took another breath.
"I like you, Sabrina."
The world seemed to grow quiet.
Sabrina blinked in surprise.
She hadn't expected this.
Not at all.
"I'm sorry if this is sudden," Adrian continued.
"I just didn't want to keep pretending I only wanted to be friends."
For a long moment, Sabrina didn't know what to say.
She respected Adrian.
He was thoughtful, responsible, and kind.
But...
Her heart remained strangely calm.
It didn't race.
It didn't flutter.
Instead...
Another face appeared in her mind.
Midnight.
His quiet smile.
His gentle encouragement.
The way he always caught her when she stumbled.
The realization startled her.
---
"I'm honored," Sabrina said softly.
"Really."
Adrian nodded.
"But..."
She lowered her eyes.
"I don't think I can return your feelings."
He smiled sadly.
"...Is there someone else?"
Sabrina hesitated.
"I..."
She honestly didn't know.
Not yet.
"I don't have an answer."
Adrian let out a quiet laugh.
"I guess that means my chances aren't very good."
"I'm sorry."
He shook his head.
"You don't have to apologize."
After a brief silence, he smiled once more.
"I hope... whoever makes your heart happy realizes how lucky they are."
Sabrina felt a lump form in her throat.
"Thank you for understanding."
---
From where he sat, Midnight couldn't hear their conversation.
But he saw Adrian smile sadly before walking away alone.
A few moments later, Sabrina returned.
She looked unusually quiet.
Midnight stood.
"Is everything okay?"
She nodded slowly.
"...Can we walk?"
"Of course."
Together, they left the amphitheater.
The sounds of music faded behind them as they followed the quiet campus paths.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Finally, Midnight broke the silence.
"Did something happen?"
Sabrina looked at the stars above.
"Someone confessed to me."
Midnight stopped walking.
His heart felt as though it had forgotten how to beat.
"...Adrian?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
Silence settled between them.
Midnight wanted to ask a hundred questions.
Did she accept?
Did she reject him?
Was she happy?
Instead, he managed only one.
"...What did you say?"
Sabrina smiled faintly.
"I told him I couldn't return his feelings."
The tightness in Midnight's chest eased.
Without realizing it, he let out the breath he had been holding.
She looked at him curiously.
"You seemed worried."
"I..."
For once...
The words refused to come.
He looked away.
"I was concerned."
She smiled gently.
"Thank you."
As they continued walking, Sabrina spoke again.
"He asked if there was someone else."
Midnight's heartbeat quickened.
"...And?"
"I couldn't answer."
She laughed softly.
"Because I don't understand my own heart yet."
Midnight lowered his eyes.
Neither did he.
Not completely.
But one thing had become painfully clear.
The thought of losing Sabrina to someone else frightened him more than anything.
As they reached the dormitory entrance, Sabrina turned toward him.
"Good night, Midnight."
"...Good night."
She smiled before disappearing inside the building.
Midnight remained standing beneath the campus lights.
The cool evening breeze brushed against his face.
For the first time, he realized he could no longer hide behind silence forever.
Someone else had already confessed to Sabrina.
Sooner or later...
He would have to face his own heart.
Even if it terrified him.
Because love, once awakened, refused to be ignored.
