The rainfall roaring outside the mouth of the cavern might have brought a profound sense of relief to my battered spirit, effectively prolonging the company of the formidable stranger.
For a few fragile hours, I was safe from the cruelties of the Ravenstone pack and the predatory designs of the border traders.
But the stormy sanctuary was a fleeting illusion.
For as the air dampness deepened, the weather revealed something strange. Something impossible.
I began to shiver.
At first, it was merely a subtle tremor in my fingers, but within moments, a violent, bone-deep frost took hold of my frame.
My teeth began clattering together with a rhythmic, frantic clatter that echoed softly against the damp stone walls of the cave.
I wrapped my arms tightly around my torso, tucking my knees toward my chest beneath the pile of fur pelts.
'Impossible!' I thought, panic flaring in my chest as the ice in my veins refused to melt. 'This cannot be happening.'
My savior, who had been pacing restlessly about the cave like a caged predator, abruptly ceased his low muttered complaints about the delayed journey.
He turned his imposing frame and gazed down at me, his eyes narrowing.
"You are cold?" he said, his deep voice carrying a note of sharp disbelief.
Weakly, my vision blurring slightly from the intensity of the tremors, I nodded.
"Impossible," the man grunted and his face twisted into a complex mixture of a grimace and utter surprise as he took a step toward my makeshift bed. "Werewolves are not meant to feel the sting of the cold."
I waved my hands about in the dim firelight, my fingers splaying as I tried desperately to explain.
I wanted to tell him that I was just as astonished, just as frightened by this vulnerability as he was.
But the frantic gestures only served as a cruel reminder of my lifelong inadequacies concerning my ability to speak. I had no words to explain that my internal fire had been extinguished.
With my teeth still clattering together uncontrollably, my defeated gaze lowered to the dirt floor.
"Summon your wolf," the stranger commanded, his voice adopting the rigid authority of a seasoned leader.
I looked up, my eyes wide.
"Let her rise to the surface," he said again. "She will heat up your blood and keep you warm."
Taking a ragged, deep breath, I shut my eyes tightly.
I reached deep down into the dark, hollow spaces of my soul, calling out to the beast that had lived within me since birth. I begged her to take over, to wrap her ethereal fur around my freezing heart.
Nothing.
There was only a vast emptiness.
My eyes flew open in absolute bewilderment, the cold clawing deeper into my chest.
"What is the meaning of this?" The man frowned deeply, crossing his massive arms over his chest. "Is this some manner of low trickery? Are you playing a game with me?"
I shook my head frantically, tears of frustration stinging the corners of my eyes.
"Summon her again," he commanded, his grey eyes flashing with a sudden, dangerous intensity. "Force her to the surface."
I shut my eyes once more, gritting my teeth so hard my jaw ached. I poured every ounce of my remaining will into the spiritual bond, reaching past the trauma of the previous night.
'Where are you?' I called out into the internal darkness, my mind screaming into the void. 'Please, I need you.'
A tiny, distant whine responded from the depths of my consciousness—a sound so weak, so broken, it broke my heart.
And then came an absolutesilence.
As I opened my eyes, the grim truth finally dawned on me in all its devastating finality.
My wolf was still paralyzed, suffering from the catastrophic psychic pain cast upon her by Bjorn's public rejection. I was functionally human.
I looked up at the stranger, my shoulders slumping as I shook my head. My eyes sent a silent, raw message of utter helplessness.
The man’s chest rose and fell with a heavy, troubled inhale. Once again, he began to pace around the perimeter of the cave, his dark brows knit in thought.
Every fluid movement of his powerful frame was followed by my watchful, desperate gaze.
In the flickering amber glow of the hearth, the heavy muscles of his back and shoulders seemed to expand and ripple with an even greater, mesmerizing mass as he moved.
'Focus, Anora,' I chided myself, forcing my eyes to track the stone walls instead. 'This is no time for such debaucherous thoughts. You are freezing to death.'
The man stopped abruptly at the edge of the fire. He took a deep, centering breath, his jaw locking as he muttered something under his breath—a vow or a memory meant only for himself.
"I shall not stand by and watch another wolf die in front of my eyes," he said.
His gaze, now as hard and unyielding as forged steel, snapped directly to mine.
A small, confused frown stretched across my forehead. What did he mean by those words? Another wolf? Had he lost someone to the cold, or to something else?
I did not get the opportunity to ponder his mysterious past any further, because his next words sent a full rush of intense heat cascading all over my body.
"You will have to take off all your clothes if you wish to get warm."
My lips parted open in sheer shock. Before I could even attempt a frantic gesture of protest, the man calmly reached for the hem of his fur tunic and began to strip off his clothing.
As the heavy article dropped carelessly to the stone floor, exposing the broad expanse of his scarred, muscled chest, my lips parted even further.
Soon, he had unfastened his leather trousers, dropping them alongside his boots until he stood completely bare before me, just as he had during his transformation at dawn.
Somewhere in the hidden, unrefined corners of my mind, I offered a silent prayer of thanks to the torrential rain for granting me the scandalous opportunity I had been denied earlier;
The chance to see this stranger's bare front.
My gaze, entirely out of my control, scoured his body like a scout investigating a newly discovered land.
From the sharp angles of his bearded face, down to the heavy contours of his chest and the carved lines of his abdomen, my eyes roamed hungrily.
And then, inevitably, they settled upon what lay heavy and dark between his muscular thighs.
My cheeks burned immediately with a fierce, branding heat that owed nothing to the fire crackling in the cave.
"I can swear by the Moon Goddess that my intentions are pure," his rough voice broke through my daze, bringing my frantic gaze snapping back up to his face. "No matter how scandalous the remedy may seem to a maiden."
I nodded quickly, a desperate, clumsy attempt to hide the deep smile of sheer shame that formed on my face from being caught staring so flagrantly.
"Take off your clothing and get deep under the covers," he instructed, pointing to the empty space on the fur bedding beside me. "I will provide the heat your own beast cannot."
I glanced down at my tattered blue ceremonial robe. It was a collection of shredded rags, soaked with the dampness of the woods and my own sweat.
Should it even be dignified with the name of clothing anymore?
Avoiding his piercing stare, I peeled the ruined velvet rags off my body, tossing them into the shadows of the cave, and quickly crawled deep beneath the heavy layers of winter pelts.
I turned my back to him, facing the cold stone wall of the cavern, hoping against hope that the darkness would conceal my burning, crimson cheeks.
The thick fur covers made a soft, heavy rustle behind me and a moment later, I felt the immense, solid weight of his body settle onto the bedding. His long, muscular arms wrapped around my bare waist, pulling me gently but firmly back against his massive chest.
The moment my cold skin met the radiant, unnatural heat of his bare body, a gasp caught in my throat. The pure, comforting warmth of his wolf lineage instantly chased away the biting frost that had been torturing my skin. It felt like stepping into a sunlit meadow after a lifetime in a frozen tomb.
I melted against him, resting the contours of my body deeper into his possessive hold.
"Do you feel the warmth returning?" His hot breath fanned across the sensitive skin of my exposed neck. At the same time, the deep, rumbling tremors of his chest vibrated through my own back as he spoke.
I nodded smoothly against his arm, a soft sigh escaping my lips.
"Good," his voice lowered to a dark, gravelly whisper, his grip tightening imperceptibly around my waist, anchoring me to him.
The rainfall intensified outside the cave, turning accompanied by thunder. The wind howled, thrashing the ancient trees.
But now, the storm did not bother me in the slightest.
Instead, as my heavy eyelids slowly shut and the comforting scent of pine and wild hearth enveloped my senses, a quiet realization washed over me.
I found myself wishing that the rain would never stop.
I wanted this night to go on forever.
