7.Going to the Hospital Together

677 Words
The police officer who had been questioning the girl pinched her temples in an attempt to revive her, but to no avail. Just as everyone was growing increasingly worried, the wail of an ambulance could be heard approaching from a distance. Soon, the ambulance parked not far from the villa, and several medical staff in white coats got out. After clarifying the situation, they used a stretcher to carefully transfer the girl onto the ambulance. The ambulance sped off, quickly arriving at the hospital. Shang Lan had initially planned to let Zhu Junjie handle the situation alone, intending to wait for updates from the police. However, Zhu Junjie, concerned that Shang Lan might overthink things, insisted that she accompany him. In his view, if Shang Lan didn't witness the entire process firsthand, she might mistakenly believe that he had colluded with the police to cover up the truth. This could potentially plant a seed of doubt in her heart. Zhu Junjie was determined to clear his name through the police investigation, unwilling to let the matter remain unresolved. He feared that such an incident could create a rift in their already fragile relationship, weakening their bond even further. He couldn't afford to take that risk. After some hesitation, Shang Lan handed over the sleeping Tongtong to Zhang Ma, who had come out of the villa, and agreed to accompany Zhu Junjie to the hospital. On the way, Zhu Junjie repeatedly assured Shang Lan that he didn't know the girl. Shang Lan pinched her temples and said, "I understand how you feel right now. Let's wait for the police investigation to conclude before jumping to any conclusions." "Shang Lan, aren't you angry?" Zhu Junjie asked. "Before the truth is clear, I have no reason or right to lose my temper with you," Shang Lan replied calmly. In Zhu Junjie's eyes, while he could be a bit clueless at times, he had never been deceitful in his dealings with her. He had always been straightforward in his feelings for her, never speaking ill of her behind her back while professing his love to her face. Moreover, he had been generous with resources to women he had been involved with in the past, so he wouldn't stoop so low as to deceive a young girl. Shang Lan maintained her rational analysis. "Most girlfriends would have caused a scene by now," Zhu Junjie observed, half-jokingly, half-seriously. "It shows how much they care about their boyfriends." As he spoke, conflicting thoughts raged in his mind. One part of him saw Shang Lan's calm demeanor as a sign of trust and maturity, while another darker voice whispered that she didn't really care about him because she lacked emotional investment. "Zhu Junjie, can we please not discuss this right now?" Shang Lan's patience was wearing thin. She too was feeling frustrated. The kind of married life she envisioned was one of tranquility, where she could pursue her career and raise Tongtong alongside her partner, without the chaos and drama. If her marriage were to be filled with such turmoil, she would rather not have it at all. Shang Lan's emotions began to fray at the edges. "Let's not discuss it. Please don't get angry," Zhu Junjie quickly backtracked, sensing her impending outburst. Shang Lan was on the verge of losing her cool, which, paradoxically, was what Zhu Junjie had secretly hoped for—a sign that she cared. However, he didn't dare to provoke her further and focused on driving instead. Feeling a bit stifled, he reached into the storage compartment for a cigarette, hoping to calm his nerves. But then he remembered that he hadn't taken his usual car when they left the scene. After the girl had crashed into his car, the police needed to inspect the vehicle to confirm that it wasn't a hit-and-run. He had retrieved a different car from the garage—a Bentley—to drive Shang Lan to the hospital. This car didn't have any cigarettes in it. Zhu Junjie withdrew his hand and concentrated on driving.
