3.let nature take its course

Shang Lan could see Tongtong’s face illuminated by the faint streetlight. From the expression on his face, she could tell that Tongtong wasn’t angry, but rather, he seemed a little happy. Shang Lan didn’t know what Tongtong was thinking at the moment, but she was sure that his mind was wandering. Zhu Junjie was driving, and he wanted to turn and look at Tongtong, but he was afraid that there might be sudden situations on the road that could be dangerous. He sat in the driver’s seat, dare not move, and asked Shang Lan in a low voice, “What’s wrong with Tongtong? Is he mad at me?” “No, he’s probably just tired from playing all day,” Shang Lan replied. “Asleep?” “Almost.” “Oh.” Zhu Junjie lowered his voice even more, afraid of disturbing Tongtong. As the car passed the Ferris wheel in the city center, Shang Lan looked up at the top of it and said, “Do you want to try it and see if you’re afraid of heights?” “Today…is not a good day,” Zhu Junjie replied, suddenly realizing that even if he didn’t confess his fear of heights now, it would be exposed later. It was better to be straightforward and put an end to it, “I lied to you. I am indeed afraid of heights.” After saying that, Zhu Junjie felt much relieved. “Being honest is a good habit,” Shang Lan said. Zhu Junjie didn’t say it, but Shang Lan had already figured out that he was afraid of heights. She had just suggested going up the Ferris wheel to see him stammer and cover up. “Aren’t you angry?” “Am I that petty?” “I wish you were a little more petty,” Zhu Junjie said with a sigh. After they started dating, there were still some small frictions between them at first. Later, he learned to compromise, and their relationship became as calm as water, without even fights. This kind of relationship that skipped the passionate phase and went straight into the “old married couple” mode made Zhu Junjie feel uneasy. It felt like Shang Lan’s heart wasn’t really on him, as if she could kick him out at any time. “You’re really strange. Before we started dating, you said I was narrow-minded and liked to pick on everything. Now you want me to be petty?” Zhu Junjie was indeed a contradictory man! “That was before we started dating. Now that we’re dating, if you’re petty, it means you care about me,” Zhu Junjie explained. “What kind of logic is that?” Wasn’t it good to get along peacefully? Shang Lan felt that she and Zhu Junjie were not on the same wavelength. “My logic is normal. We’re in a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship, and we have a child together. We should show affection in front of him instead of being like this now, as if we’re just living together as roommates,” Zhu Junjie said. “Everything should be gradual. We haven’t reached that point you mentioned. I’m not an actor. I can’t pretend to show the affection you want,” Shang Lan replied. Talking about love seemed like a difficult problem for her. She didn’t know how to express a tender feeling towards Zhu Junjie. She felt that their current state was comfortable. They didn’t argue or make a fuss. Living together, they could take care of each other and prioritize Tongtong when they were with him. She was satisfied with this life and didn’t want to change anything. “You just said ‘pretend the affection I want’?” Shang Lan’s words dealt a huge blow to Zhu Junjie. In his view, Shang Lan only accepted him because of Tongtong. Now, her words further confirmed this point. His voice became desolate. Shang Lan realized that her words had been too blunt. The traffic light at the next intersection turned red, and the brake lights of the cars in front lit up. Shang Lan looked at the tail lights glowing with a halo, “I’m sorry. I told you before that I prefer to let things be.” “But why don’t you let things be in your work?” Shang Lan was a very ambitious person. She could work around the clock in her job but had no initiative in her emotions.
