The Golden Cage

411 Words
The first rays of sunlight spilled through the massive glass windows of the Hart family's mansion, painting golden streaks across the polished marble floor. Sophia Hart slowly opened her eyes. From her bedroom balcony, she could see perfectly trimmed gardens, sparkling fountains, and luxury cars parked in neat rows below. It was the kind of home people dreamed of owning. Yet to Sophia, it felt like a prison. Every hour of her day was planned. At seven o'clock, breakfast. At eight, language lessons. At ten, piano practice. In the afternoon, business meetings with her father so she could learn how to manage the Hart empire one day. She sighed as her maid entered."Good morning, Miss Sophia. Your parents are waiting." Sophia forced a smile. "I'll be down." At breakfast, her father sat at the head of the long dining table reading financial reports. Her mother elegantly sipped tea. "Happy birthday, Sophia," her mother said. "You are twenty-one today," her father added without looking up. "Old enough to carry more responsibility." Sophia smiled politely. "Thank you.""I've arranged a dinner tonight," her father continued. "Several business partners will attend. You'll also meet the son of the Kingston family." Sophia frowned. "Why?" Her mother exchanged a glance with her father. "Because he's the man you'll eventually marry." The room fell silent. Sophia's fork slipped from her fingers. "Marry him? I've never even met him." "It isn't a request," her father said firmly. "It's what's best for this family." Sophia felt tears sting her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. "This is my birthday." "And we're giving you your future." After breakfast, Sophia retreated to her room, her heart pounding with frustration. She walked onto the balcony and watched people laughing in the streets beyond the mansion gates. They looked so free. A sudden buzz came from beneath her pillow. She reached for a hidden phone that none of her family knew about. A message flashed across the screen. Lily: "Huge beach party tonight. Are you finally coming?" Sophia stared at the message for several seconds. Then, for the first time in her life, she smiled. She typed only two words. "I'll come." Little did she know, that single decision would change her life forever.End of Chapter 1 This story has romance, suspense, family conflict, emotional twists, and character growth.
