**Chapter 5: Tentative Steps**

Shenna's home, Manila

Shenna sat at her kitchen table, the soft glow of the evening light casting a warm ambiance in her cozy home. She stared at her phone, the message notification from the dating app still unread. She felt a mix of curiosity and hesitation.

Pilar, as if sensing her friend's reluctance, knocked and entered without waiting for a reply.

She found her friend sitting on the bed, staring blankly at her phone. Pilar approached her and asked again, "Hey Shenna, what's with the long face?" Shenna looked up, a mixture of emotions in her eyes, but didn't respond.

Shenna looked up, slightly startled, and gestured towards her phone.

Shenna's voice was laced with uncertainty as she spoke about the mysterious message from Chand. She told Pilar that he had sent her a friendly message, asking about her interests and hobbies, but she was hesitant to get involved. Shenna's eyes scanned the room, searching for reassurance, as she confided in her friend. "I don't know if I'm ready for this online dating thing," she said, her voice trailing off.

Pilar sat down across from her, a supportive smile on her face.

Pilar's eyes scanned the phone, her brow furrowed in concern as she read the message from Chand. "Hmm, it looks like he's just trying to get to know you," she said, her tone reassuring.

Pilar read the message aloud.

Pilar's eyes widened as she read the message, a small smile spreading across her face. "Ah, I see what you mean," she said, her voice filled with amusement. "I think Chand might be a good match for you, Shenna!"

Pilar's tone was gentle, but her words were laced with a hint of curiosity. "You're really shy about this, aren't you?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with understanding. "Tell me, what's making you hesitant to respond?"

Shenna's words were hesitant, but Pilar's empathetic tone put her at ease. "I understand where you're coming from," she said, her voice soothing. "Meeting someone online can be intimidating, but I think we can build a connection that's genuine and meaningful."

Shenna took a deep breath, feeling a sense of vulnerability wash over her. "I'm willing to take things slow and get to know you better, if that makes you feel more comfortable," Pilar added.

Pilar reached out and squeezed Shenna’s hand.

Pilar's words were laced with conviction, and Shenna felt a spark of hope ignite within her. "I know I've been hurt before," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "But the thought of getting hurt again is just too scary." Pilar's gentle smile encouraged Shenna to continue, and she found herself pouring out her fears and doubts to this kind and understanding stranger.

Shenna's eyes searched Pilar's face, seeking reassurance. "What if Chand is just another guy who promises the world but can't deliver?" she asked, her voice trembling with uncertainty.

Pilar's words were like a gentle breeze on a summer day, soothing Shenna's worries away. "What if he's not?" Shenna asked, her voice still laced with skepticism. Pilar's smile grew wider as she responded, "What if he's not? What if he turns out to be someone amazing? You'll never know unless you give it a try."

Shenna took a deep breath, considering Pilar’s words. She knew her friend was right. She couldn’t let fear dictate her life.

Shenna nodded; her determination evident in her firm tone. "Alright, I'll respond. But I'm keeping my guard up," she said, her eyes narrowing slightly as she prepared for the possibility of another disappointment.

Pilar's eyes sparkled with encouragement as she replied, "That's all I'm asking. Just give it a chance." She placed a reassuring hand on Shenna's arm, her touch gentle but firm.

Shenna took her phone back and opened the message. She typed slowly, thoughtfully.

Shenna's voice was cautious, but her words were tinged with a hint of curiosity as she spoke to Chand. "Hi Chand. I'm not really into online dating, but you seem interesting," she said, her eyes scanning the screen for any signs of deception.

Pilar's smile grew wider as she read Shenna's response, her eyes shining with approval. "Perfect. Honest and straightforward," she thought to herself, impressed by Shenna's refreshing candor.

They waited together, the air filled with a mix of anticipation and nervous energy. It wasn’t long before Shenna’s phone buzzed with a reply.

Chand's words were warm and gentle, his curiosity getting the better of him as he asked Shenna about her decision to try online dating. "Hi Shenna! Thanks for responding. I understand the hesitation. I wasn't sure about this either, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

What made you decide to try it?" he asked, his eyes fixed on the screen.

Shenna read the message out loud, smiling at his honesty.

Shenna's eyes scanned the conversation, her mind processing the words and tone of Chand's message. She smiled to herself, feeling a sense of comfort and ease. "He seems genuine," she thought to herself, her instincts telling her that this might be someone worth getting to know.

Pilar's voice was a gentle whisper in the background, offering her opinion and encouragement. "He does. Keep going," she said, her words barely audible but full of conviction. Shenna's eyes lingered on the screen, her fingers hovering over the keyboard as she contemplated her next move.

Shenna typed her response, feeling a bit more at ease.

My friend Pilar persuaded me to give it a try. She thinks I deserve a chance at happiness. I have to admit, I'm feeling a little nervous but also excited about this new opportunity. Shenna explained, looking thoughtful.

Chand nodded sympathetically. "Pilar sounds like a good friend," she said. "I have a friend, Raj, who pushed me into this too. I think they just want the best for us."

Shenna felt a connection forming.

Shenna smiled, feeling a sense of camaraderie with Chand. "Yeah, Pilar is great. So, tell me more about yourself.

Pilar, watching the exchange, couldn’t help but grin.

Pilar chimed in, her voice laced with amusement. "See? This isn't so bad, is it?" She raised an eyebrow, a hint of mischief playing on her lips.

Shenna's expression softened, and she reached out to touch Pilar's arm. "No, it's not. Thanks, Pilar. For pushing me to do this." Her eyes sparkled with gratitude as she acknowledged the role her friend had played in helping her overcome her fears and take the leap.

Pilar's smile grew wider, her eyes shining with encouragement. "Anytime, Shenna. You deserve to be happy. And who knows, maybe Chand is the start of something wonderful." She leaned in, her voice taking on a conspiratorial tone. "

As Shenna continued her conversation with Chand, she felt a sense of hope she hadn’t felt in a long time. Maybe, just maybe, this could lead to something beautiful.
