Everyone was anxious to find out about the selection of archers and swordsmen as 60 of them would be chosen to be primarily as archers c*m swordsmen or simply as a swordsman instead.
However since there was an abundance of military-grade bows in the storage barns, The 120 of them from both garrisons were decided to be turned into archers c*m swordsmen.
As their role was chosen, the types of equipment that they would be carrying were a bow, quiver, T baton and a short sword at their sides. While the number of weapons carried was close to double to their counterparts, the pikemen do have to carry a shortsword on their sides, acting as a secondary weapon in case their pike broke in the middle of a pike wall et cetera.
No matter how a tight formation was required as the pike wall, once it was set in place, would be unpenetrable by cavalrymen, knights or even foot soldiers. The only troops that could get close and crush them would be those with matchlocks or flintlocks.
With the availability of these hot weapons, it would definitely create an imbalance in any kind of warfare against cold weapons...
Once everyone had gone through another set of training at the grounds after their pikemen stations, they all retired to their homes, with satisfied looks on their faces and kept their weapons at home and begins to continue their daily routine thereafter.
Even they came back with sore muscles all over but it was nothing compared to them if they were to be beaten down without a fight.
All the 160 conscripts would be eager to receive their full set of weapons and also their training from then on and during these few months, they would be dedicating themselves in training hard to be as par as the garrisons from the King's army.
Besides, with the free months to come, all the 192 conscripts would be turned into Gracehaven's own militiamen. Let us call them that from now on then.
With the then right training and their tenacious dedication, one could not help to wonder how this little army would turn out to be after all.
Besides, while then new militiamen were busy training at the fields, I was doing lateral pulls with the chest expander contraption, first by gripping using my left arm and pulling it sideways using my right arm and repeating from 25 repetitions and descending.
Before long...25 repetitions dwindled down to 20, then 15, 10, 5 and last 1 for both left and right lateral pull on the second contraption.
As this exercise was done sitting down on a bench instead of standing up, the force of exerting the pull on the rawhide and locking it down using my left arm and then my right arm consecutively, made the muscles on my shoulder blade to sore, along with the 'wings' at the sides of my body.
Not forgetting that the exercise also helped to crunch my abs in a way that I had to bend my body forwards while I stood up and walked towards Heather who was sleeping on her side of the throne, as the slightly warm sun was heating up her face through the thick autumn clouds.
Walking and standing up while flailing my useless arms once again doesn't help me a bit as I tried to awaken Heather from her slumber.
With a rather guttural voice, she awoken from her slumber and subconsciously wiped the sides of her mouth with the back of her hand and slowly squinted her eyes open.
"Yawn... I didn't realise I fell asleep already... You're done with your exercises dear? My... Your physique looks kind of different today. Its as if your loose muscles had now turned tight as if it was meant to be like that after all."
"Hahaha... There are 6 more days. I won't be touching the bow at all but I would be doing these exercises until I got the hang of it. Besides, help me out of these damp clothes and help me to wipe myself down, will ya?"
I unceremoniously removed my tunic and breeches and left me in my drawers while Heather quickly wiped the sweat off my body so it would not evaporate on it. After doing so, I picked my damp clothes and put them in the laundry basket while Old Kayla crept up and saw that I had already towelled myself dry.
"You seemed to be more lively, childe. How do you feel after your second set of exercise?" Old Kayla spoke softly as she examined the soreness on my body and nodded in apprehension.
"It is quite alright, Old Kayla. My body seemed to be getting used to it. Furthermore, are you going to smear the medicinal ointment on me again?" I asked as I eyed that she was holding the earthen bowl in her hands already.
I won't know what she sees in those sore muscles of mine but only her old eyes would be able to tell her a whole different story. She spoke gently to me as she smeared the medicinal ointment on my body and instantly I could feel the warmth entering through the pores.
After some time I could feel a cool tingling sensation that seems to massage my sore muscles back to health. Old Kayla mentioned, "Once the one week phase had passed, just do the exercises moderately to keep it toned up. You would also need to follow up on the Archery and swordsmanship too, right?"
"That's right, Old Kayla. I would follow up on the training to keep up with the militiamen. Besides, I can't appear to be weaker than them, right? There's so much to learn from Gwen, Michelle and her buddies, as well as Old Mann and also with Eagle and his Shadow members."
"I might even love to learn a few tricks that the Shadow members might have so that I would be quite a versatile fighter."
I said that with a sparkle in my eyes but a worrisome look quickly clouded Heather's face. You are not going to engage yourself in a war together with the militiamen, do you? What if something happens to you?"
Heather was shocked at me and covered up her mouth with her hands as she stared at me wild-eyed.
"What's there to worry? If anything happens to me, be it my legs or arms, someone at the infirmary would be able to fix me up, right?"
I hinted to Heather but my words failed to hold very well with her.
"Isabela is treating Farah's father right now. It had been 2 days and we do not know any results yet. Whether there is even a minuscule of progress, we won't know about it. We are no experts in the field of medicine... And furthermore, please don't sprout any nonsense like such because the baby inside is not happy to hear as well... "
Whether the baby was really kicking up a fuss, only Heather knows more about it but since it's nearing dinner time, I suppose Heather was as hungry as I am right now. Since she was carrying a baby, she needs more nutrition as per normal and frankly speaking our normal foods had more than enough nutrition to go round.
It's either fish, small game, wild boar or venison meat inside the pottage but hey...! No one's complaining as it was a pretty wholesome meal, you know...!
Every single time...!
