CHAPTER 4: THE SECOND SCENT

817 Words
⸻ They’d made camp in the shadow of the mountains, Kael curled in a makeshift nest of furs and moss, body still tender from Vaelen’s knot, his scent thick around him like armor. The bond pulsed through Kael like a second heartbeat—steady, constant, inescapable. Vaelen paced the edge of the clearing like a caged beast. Something had changed. It began as a shift in the wind, a sour tang layered beneath the scent of pine and smoke. Then Kael felt it—a flicker of discomfort, a low thrum of unease crawling down his spine. Another alpha. He sat up just as Vaelen’s head snapped toward the trees. “Stay down,” Vaelen growled. Kael obeyed without question, eyes locked on the treeline. The rival stepped into view like a shadow dragged from the underworld—tall, broad-shouldered, and beautiful in the cold way a blade is beautiful. His eyes were pale silver, his hair as white as frost, and his scent— Gods. Kael gasped, his heat-sensitive body responding before he could stop it. The new alpha’s scent hit him like a wave—powerful, sweet, electric. It wasn’t Vaelen’s earthy smoke, but a sharper, colder magic. Ice and fire. Control and challenge. “You smell him,” the newcomer said, voice smooth as silk. “Don’t lie.” Kael flushed, shifting back into the furs, confused and aroused all at once. The bond flared hot with discomfort. Vaelen moved between them instantly. “Leave,” he said flatly. “Now.” The pale alpha smiled. “Is this the little omega the High Council’s whispering about? The one bonded to the last blackblood?” Kael tensed. Vaelen’s growl was low, feral. “You have five seconds before I rip out your throat.” “I’m not here for a fight,” the alpha said. “I’m here to make an offer.” “No,” Vaelen snarled. “He’s not yours to offer anything.” Kael felt the weight of both alphas pressing against his senses—dominance rolling off them in waves. It made his skin prickle and his body betray him, even as fear crept up his spine. “What’s your name?” Kael asked, before he could stop himself. The rival tilted his head. “Theren.” “Don’t talk to him,” Vaelen snapped. But Theren was already stepping closer, his gaze locked on Kael. “You’re bound to him, yes. But your heat hasn’t ended, has it? Your body knows there’s another alpha strong enough to claim you.” Kael whimpered. Vaelen exploded forward. One second he was beside Kael, the next he had Theren slammed against a tree, claws bared, eyes glowing with inhuman rage. “Say another word and I’ll paint the forest with your blood.” Theren didn’t fight. He simply smiled, eerily calm. “You think you’ve claimed him, Vaelen. But the bond is still fresh. Weak. You’ve knotted him, yes—but can you keep him?” Vaelen’s snarl was a sound of pure fury. Kael stood on shaky legs, the air thick with aggression and pheromones. “Stop,” he said. “Please—stop.” Vaelen turned, chest heaving, golden eyes wild. “You felt it, didn’t you?” Kael didn’t answer. “He challenged the bond.” Kael stepped closer, pressing a hand to Vaelen’s chest. “You don’t need to kill him.” Vaelen grabbed Kael’s wrist, holding it tight. “I do. I need to mark you again. Right now. I need to remind your body who you belong to.” Kael shivered. “Here?” Vaelen didn’t ask permission. He dropped to his knees, dragging Kael down onto his lap, ripping the furs aside. The tip of his c**k pressed against Kael’s still-sensitive entrance. Theren watched with unblinking eyes. Kael moaned as Vaelen thrust inside him in one brutal stroke. “This is what it means to be mine,” Vaelen growled, f*****g him hard, possessive, primal. “No one else. Ever.” Kael couldn’t speak. The stretch, the fullness—it was overwhelming, made worse by Theren’s scent still lingering on the air, reminding his heat-clouded body there was another option. But Vaelen made it vanish with every thrust, every growl, every kiss he laid over the bond mark. The knot swelled again—bigger, more urgent. “Mine,” Vaelen snarled. Kael cried out as the knot forced its way in, locking them together again. Vaelen bit down on the mark, reinforcing the bond, his magic flooding Kael’s body like wildfire. Theren watched it all, expression unreadable. When it was over, Kael lay panting in Vaelen’s arms, the rival alpha gone like a ghost. But something had changed. The bond was stronger now—almost painful in its depth. And Kael wasn’t sure if it was love, obsession… or something older and darker still. ⸻
