The peace lasted exactly two weeks.
Kaelen was in the medical bay with Elara. She was getting her regular checkup. Dr. Chen was pleased with her progress.
"Your health is improving," Dr. Chen said. "The treatments are working."
Elara smiled. "That's good news."
"It's great news," Kaelen said. "You're getting stronger."
"I have a good brother. He takes care of me."
Kaelen hugged her. "Always."
Then the alarm sounded.
Kaelen's blood went cold. He ran to the window. The city was burning. Fires everywhere. Explosions in the distance.
"What's happening?" Elara asked.
"I don't know. Stay here. Stay safe."
He ran out of the medical bay. The streets were chaos. People were running. Screaming. Dying.
He found Vera in the central square. She was directing the defense.
"The Collective," she said. "They're attacking."
"But we destroyed their base."
"Not all of them. There are survivors. They're seeking revenge."
Kaelen's fists clenched. "Where are they?"
"Everywhere. They've surrounded the city."
Kaelen ran toward the eastern wall. The fighting was heaviest there. He climbed the wall and looked out.
Thousands of soldiers. Enhanced. Armed. Ready to kill.
And at the center of them stood a figure. Tall. Hooded. Familiar.
Kaelen's blood ran cold. "Garrison."
The figure pulled back his hood. His face was cold. His eyes were hard.
"Kaelen Voss," Garrison said. "We meet again."
"Garrison. I thought we were allies."
"I was never your ally." Garrison's voice was bitter. "I was using you. Just like you used me."
"You lied to me."
"I told you what you needed to hear." Garrison smiled. "And now you're going to pay for everything you've done."
"You'll never win."
"I already have."
Garrison raised his hand. The army advanced.
---
The battle was brutal.
Kaelen fought like a demon. His body moved with inhuman speed. His aim was perfect. He killed without hesitation.
But the soldiers kept coming. They were endless. Relentless.
Vera fought beside him. Her blade was dripping blood. Her eyes were wild.
"We can't hold them," she shouted. "There are too many."
"We have to." Kaelen's voice was hard. "We can't let them take the city."
Cole and Maya fought on the other side of the wall. Harris was leading the defense in the streets. Everyone was fighting.
But they were losing.
Kaelen saw the breach. The soldiers were breaking through. They were flooding into the city.
He ran toward the breach. He had to stop them. Had to save his people.
He reached the breach and opened fire. He dropped three soldiers. Then four. Then five.
But they kept coming.
Then he saw Garrison. The man was advancing through the chaos. His eyes were cold. His hands were glowing.
"Kaelen," Garrison said. "It's time to end this."
"Then end it."
They charged at each other. Their bodies collided with a crack of energy. They were evenly matched.
Garrison threw a punch. Kaelen dodged. He drove his knee into Garrison's stomach. Garrison stumbled.
"You're weak," Garrison hissed. "You always were."
"I'm stronger than you'll ever know."
They fought. Brutal. Vicious. Kaelen was faster. Garrison was stronger. But Kaelen was more determined.
He found an opening and drove his knife into Garrison's chest. The man gasped.
"This... this isn't over," Garrison whispered.
"It's over for you."
Kaelen pulled the knife out. Garrison collapsed.
The soldiers paused. Their leader was dead. They were confused.
Kaelen raised his voice. "Garrison is dead! Your leader is dead! Surrender now and you'll be spared!"
The soldiers looked at each other. Then they lowered their weapons.
It was over.
---
The battle was won. But the cost was high.
Hundreds of people were dead. The city was in ruins. Fires were still burning. People were crying.
Kaelen walked through the streets. He saw the destruction. The death. The pain.
His father found him. "You did well."
"I didn't do enough." Kaelen's voice was heavy. "Too many people died."
"You saved this city. You saved our people."
"At what cost?"
His father put a hand on his shoulder. "That's the burden of leadership. You carry the weight. But you also carry the hope."
Kaelen nodded slowly. He didn't feel hopeful. But he didn't feel hopeless either.
---
The next day, they buried the dead.
Kaelen stood at the funeral. He saw the faces of the grieving. The families. The friends. The loved ones.
He felt their pain. Their loss. Their anger.
He stepped forward. "We've lost so much. So many people we loved. So many people we needed."
The crowd was silent. Waiting.
"But we're still standing. We're still fighting. And we'll keep fighting. For them. For each other. For the future."
The crowd cheered. They were with him. They believed in him.
He felt hope. A small spark. But it was there.
---
That night, Kaelen stood on the rooftop.
The stars were out. The sky was clear. He thought about Sera. About everything they'd been through.
"I won't give up," he whispered. "I'll keep fighting. For you. For everyone."
He felt the nanites pulsing in his blood. They were calm. Peaceful.
He looked at the future. It was uncertain. But he was ready.
Whatever came next, he would face it.
