The city had changed.
Kaelen and Elara were gone. Their children and grandchildren carried on their legacy. The city was stronger than ever. New buildings rose. New technologies were developed. New alliances were formed.
But the world was still dangerous.
Commander Jace stood on the wall, looking out at the horizon. He was tall and strong, with his mother Elara's eyes and his father's determination. He'd been trained by the best. He was ready to lead.
His second-in-command came up beside him. "Commander, we've received word. There's trouble in the northern territories."
"What kind of trouble?"
"Raiders. They've been attacking settlements. Burning crops. Stealing supplies."
Jace's fists clenched. "Then we mobilize. We protect our people."
"Yes, Commander."
---
The journey north was long and cold.
Jace led a small team of soldiers. They moved through the mountains, following the trails. The raiders were clever. They knew how to hide.
"We're close," Jace said. "I can feel it."
"How do you know?" one of his soldiers asked.
"I just do." He didn't explain. He couldn't. He just knew.
They found the raiders at dawn. A small camp. Maybe twenty men. They were armed with old weapons, but they were fierce.
Jace raised his hand. "Surrender now and you'll be spared!"
The raiders laughed. "We don't surrender!"
"Then you'll die."
---
The battle was quick.
Jace moved with speed and precision. He killed three raiders before they could react. His soldiers followed, taking down the rest.
The raiders were defeated. The prisoners were freed.
Jace looked at the captives. "Are you okay?"
"We are now," one said. "Thank you. Thank you for saving us."
"You're welcome. That's what we do."
---
Jace returned to the city a hero.
People cheered for him. They threw flowers at his feet. They called him a hero.
But Jace didn't feel like a hero. He just felt tired.
His grandmother's portrait hung in the command center. Elara's face smiled down at him.
"I'm trying," he whispered. "I'm trying to be like you."
He felt a hand on his shoulder. His father.
"You already are," his father said. "You're doing great."
"Thank you."
---
The weeks passed.
Jace continued to lead. He trained new soldiers. Planned new strategies. Prepared for whatever came next.
He was good at it. Natural. It was in his blood.
But he still had doubts.
One night, he visited the memorial. His great-uncle Kaelen's name was carved into the stone. His grandmother's name was next to it.
"I don't know if I can do this," he whispered. "I don't know if I'm strong enough."
A voice came from behind him. "You are."
He turned. An old woman stood there. She had kind eyes and a warm smile.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"I am an old friend of your family. I knew Kaelen. I knew Elara." She paused. "And I know you."
"How?"
"I've been watching you. You're strong. Determined. Just like them."
"Thank you." Jace paused. "But I'm scared. What if I fail?"
"Then you get back up. You try again. That's what they did."
Jace smiled. "Thank you."
---
The years passed.
Jace grew older. His hair turned gray. His body grew weak. But his spirit remained strong.
His children were by his side. His grandchildren were by his side. His friends were by his side.
He lived a long and happy life. Full of love. Full of purpose.
One evening, he sat on the rooftop. The sun was setting. The sky was beautiful.
His granddaughter sat beside him. "What are you thinking about?"
"Everything." He paused. "The past. The future. All of it."
"That's a lot to carry."
"I know." He smiled. "But I wouldn't have it any other way."
"Why?"
"Because it made me who I am."
---
The years passed.
New generations were born. New leaders emerged.
But they never forgot. The ones who had come before. The ones who had given everything.
And their legacy lived on.
Forever.
