The peace lasted exactly one month.
Kaelen was in the central square, helping to rebuild a collapsed building. The sun was warm on his face. Children were playing nearby. People were laughing. It felt like a dream.
Then the explosion came.
The blast threw him across the square. He slammed into a wall, his vision swimming. Debris rained down around him. Screams filled the air.
He struggled to his feet. The nanites were already working, healing his wounds, sharpening his senses. He could see the smoke rising from the eastern edge of the city.
Another explosion. Then another.
"Get to the shelters!" he shouted. "Everyone, move!"
People ran. Children cried. Mothers grabbed their children and fled.
Kaelen ran toward the explosions. His pistol was in his hand. His blood was fire.
He reached the eastern edge of the city. The damage was catastrophic. Buildings were destroyed. Fires burned everywhere. Bodies lay in the streets.
And in the center of it all stood a man.
He was tall and broad, dressed in black armor. His face was hidden behind a mask. But Kaelen could feel the power radiating from him. The same power that pulsed in his own blood.
"Who are you?" Kaelen demanded.
The man turned. His voice was cold and mechanical. "I am the Reaper's Ghost. I am the one who will finish what Silas started."
"Silas is dead."
"Silas was a fool. He tried to control the nanites. I will embrace them." The man raised his hand. "And I will destroy everyone who stands in my way."
Kaelen charged. He fired. The bullets bounced off the man's armor.
The Ghost moved faster than Kaelen could track. He slammed into Kaelen, driving him back. Kaelen hit the ground hard.
"You're strong," the Ghost said. "But you're not strong enough."
He raised his hand. A wave of energy erupted from his palm.
Kaelen rolled. The energy blast destroyed the ground where he'd been lying.
He scrambled to his feet. The Ghost was advancing. Slow. Confident.
Kaelen fired again. Again, the bullets did nothing.
"Your weapons are useless against me. I am beyond such things."
Kaelen's mind raced. He needed to find a weakness. Any weakness.
The Ghost's armor. It had to have a weak point. A gap. A seam.
He aimed for the neck. Fired.
The bullet hit the gap between the helmet and the chest plate. The Ghost staggered.
"Impossible," he hissed.
"Nothing is impossible."
Kaelen charged. He tackled the Ghost, driving him to the ground. He rained down blows on the man's helmet.
The Ghost threw him off. He stood up, his movements slower now. Wounded.
"You'll pay for that," he snarled.
He raised his hand again. The energy built.
Kaelen braced himself. The blast hit him square in the chest. He flew backward, crashing through a wall.
He lay in the rubble, gasping for breath. His body was broken. The nanites were working, but they couldn't heal him fast enough.
The Ghost approached. His footsteps were heavy. Final.
"Any last words?" he asked.
Kaelen smiled. "Yeah. You talk too much."
He pulled the pin on a grenade and threw it.
The explosion was deafening. The Ghost was thrown back, his armor cracked and smoking.
Kaelen struggled to his feet. He was weak. Dizzy. But he was still standing.
The Ghost got up too. His armor was damaged. But he was still alive.
"You're... you're just like me," the Ghost said. "You could be so much more."
"I'm nothing like you."
Kaelen charged again. This time, he was faster. Stronger. The nanites were pushing him. Forgiving him.
He slammed into the Ghost, driving him into a wall. He tore off the man's helmet.
The face underneath was young. Pale. Familiar.
"Garrison," Kaelen breathed. "You're alive."
"Thanks to you." Garrison smiled. "The cure saved me. Made me stronger. Made me whole."
"You're a monster."
"Maybe." Garrison laughed. "But at least I'm honest about what I am."
He threw Kaelen off. Kaelen crashed into the ground. His body was screaming. He couldn't take much more.
Garrison raised his hand. The energy built again.
"Goodbye, Kaelen."
The blast came.
But at the last moment, someone pushed Kaelen out of the way.
Sera.
She took the blast full in the chest. She flew backward, her body limp.
"Sera!" Kaelen screamed.
He scrambled to her side. She was bleeding. Broken. Dying.
"No. No, no, no." He held her in his arms. "Stay with me. Please, stay with me."
Her eyes fluttered open. "Kaelen... I..."
"Don't talk. Save your strength."
"I love you." Her voice was barely a whisper. "I always... I always loved you."
"Don't leave me. Please. I can't do this without you."
She smiled. A soft, gentle smile.
"Then don't. Fight. For me. For everyone." Her eyes closed. "I believe in you."
And then she was gone.
Kaelen held her body, his tears falling onto her face. His heart was broken. Shattered into a million pieces.
He looked up at Garrison. The man was watching him. Smiling.
"You took everything from me," Kaelen said.
"You took everything from me first."
Kaelen laid Sera's body down. He stood up. His eyes were burning. His blood was fire.
He didn't speak. He just attacked.
He moved faster than he ever had. The nanites were screaming in his blood. Pushing him. Changing him.
He slammed into Garrison, driving him back. He rained down blow after blow. He didn't stop. He couldn't stop.
Garrison tried to fight back. But Kaelen was unstoppable. A force of nature. A storm of vengeance.
He drove his knife into Garrison's chest. Once. Twice. Again and again.
Garrison collapsed. His eyes went wide. "You... you can't..."
"I can."
Kaelen pulled the knife out. Garrison's body slumped to the ground.
It was over. Garrison was dead.
But Kaelen didn't feel victorious. He felt empty.
He walked back to Sera's body. He knelt beside her.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'm so sorry."
He picked her up and carried her away from the destruction. Away from the death. Away from everything.
The city was in ruins. Fires were burning. People were crying.
But Kaelen didn't see any of it. He only saw her face. Her smile. Her eyes.
She was gone. And he was alone.
---
The next day, they buried Sera.
The funeral was small. Just family. Just friends. Kaelen stood at the grave, his hands shaking.
Elara was beside him. She held his hand.
"She was a good person," Elara said. "She loved you."
"I know." Kaelen's voice was broken. "I loved her too."
His father was there. Vera. Elena. Lyra. They all stood in silence.
Kaelen looked at the grave. The headstone was simple. Just her name.
Sera Vance. Beloved. Never Forgotten.
"I promise you," Kaelen said. "I will never forget you. I will never stop loving you."
He turned away. The tears were falling again.
But he knew he had to be strong. For her. For everyone.
The fight wasn't over. There were still enemies out there. Still threats to face.
But for now, he needed to mourn. He needed to heal.
He walked away from the grave, Elara's hand in his.
The sun was setting. The sky was painted in shades of orange and red.
It was beautiful. And it was heartbreaking.
