Macon Forrester
Damien Craven was not one of my favorite Moon Shadow residents. He was rich, entitled, and arrogant. Moon Shadow didn't really have a police department. It wasn't the kind of place that could. But because werewolves tended to be stronger than most of the residents, we were frequently called in if there was ever trouble between different creatures. And Damien got into a LOT of trouble.
At that moment, the young man stood in front of my jeep. His grey eyes were blazing with fury, and his hands were lifted, blue magic sparks coming from his hands. There were rumors that the boy could slip into people's dreams and give them nightmares. But while witches had one main power, they could still do other things. And from what I'd heard of the Craven family, they often dabbled in things that they shouldn't.
He was also the boy that everyone thought was going to be Serena's mate.
“Damien!" Serena called out, and she got out of the jeep. I got out and watched as she hugged him tightly. “What are you doing here?"
“I scryed for you because I wanted to make sure you were safe. I was very surprised when my scrying crystal showed me not only you, but Enora here, in this cabin. Which is very strange because everyone thought Enora had been taken and killed by hunters. But Enora's here, in a cabin, that happens to be owned by him. So, my new theory is that the wolves are k********g witches and trying to make some kind of mutant hybrid witch army."
I snorted. “Clever fiction, boy, but that isn't what's happening here and you need to let go of my mate before I tear you to shreds."
Serena quickly stopped hugging Damien. “It's okay, Macon. He's an old friend."
I shook my head. “He doesn't look at you like he's an old friend, and I know that the two of you have history. I was there the night that he kissed you, if you recall."
Serena blushed. “You saw that?"
“Werewolf," I reminded her. “I have very strong senses."
Damien had let go of Serena, but was still holding onto her hand tightly. The blue sparks of magic were still coming from one hand as if he were prepared to fight. “Serena, please come with me. We'll get Enora, and we'll go. My family has places we can stay at, far away from here, and be safe."
“You don't know what you're asking her!" I snarled. “You need to leave, Damien."
Serena gripped his hand tightly. “He's right. I'm sorry. I know… I know that we thought we were going to be together, but the Goddess has put me with Macon for a reason. And I think this might be connected to my family now, and I've got to figure out what's going on. I can't leave with you, Damien."
Damien dropped her hand. “You're a fool, Serena! He's trying to hurt your family and you need to get out of here as soon as possible. Come with me!"
“Don't listen to him," I told her. “He's a boy. He doesn't know what he's talking about! I've protected Moon Shadow for centuries. I've seen generations of Setters, and worked with them. Why would I do anything to hurt your family?"
Serena looked at me. I had thought in the jeep on the drive up that we had been connecting. Maybe not falling in love right away, but getting to a point to where we could at least try. I could see her looking at Damien though, with such intense longing that I couldn't stop myself. I pulled her away from him.
“You are mine!" I snarled at her. “The Goddess told us that we were supposed to be together. And I am not going to let you endanger my pack because of something so trivial as a lost love. You and me, we both have a duty. And we're going to fulfill it because we have an obligation to our people to do so."
“An obligation?" Serena tried to pull away from me. “That's what you think of me?"
I snarled again. “That isn't what I---"
“That's what you said!" She tried pulling away from me but my grip was too strong. “I don't want to be an obligation. Let me go."
I gripped her tighter. “No. I'm not letting you leave with him."
Serena kicked me in the shin then, and I was so startled that I let her go. “Let me make one thing clear! I am not an obligation. I am not someone that needs to be saved. I am a Goddess d*mned witch!"
And then, much to my surprise, she completely disappeared.
“F*ck!" Damien shouted. “Serena! Serena, come back."
“What the h*ll was that?" I said, “Where did she go?"
He snorted. “You don't even know your mate's powers? That's pretty bad, man."
“I thought she could do something with light."
“She's the next High Priestess," said Damien. “Which means that she can control the sun and the moon. She can make fire, and glow, and she can disappear completely. Or sometimes only halfway. Because the moon---"
“Waxes and wanes," I finished.
“And she just waned," said Damien. “And you've lost her to Goddess knows where!"
“I lost her?" I grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, and pulled him up off the ground. He was only nineteen years-old, so young, but I didn't care. “I wouldn't have lost her if you wouldn't have chased her!"
I tossed him into his Porsche, and his head hit it with a hard whack. “If you come near her again, or try to interfere with my relationship with her, I will find a way to destroy you. Do you understand?" I towered over him.
He looked up at me and sneered. “You don't scare me."
I barred my teeth at him, snarling. “You're an i***t, then. Because if I don't find her, I will kill you."
