The iron gates of the Devereaux estate stood tall against the gray winter sky.
Clara Beaumont tightened her grip on the steering wheel as her car rolled to a stop several meters away. Her heart pounded so violently she could hear it above the quiet hum of the engine.
Just twenty-four hours ago, she had imagined driving through these gates as Lucien Devereaux's wife.
Instead, she had arrived as a stranger.
She turned off the engine but remained seated.
Her hands trembled.
The engagement ring still rested on her finger, catching the pale sunlight that filtered through the clouds.
She stared at it.
Only yesterday, it had symbolized forever.
Now it felt like evidence from another life.
She remembered Lucien slipping it onto her finger beside Lake Geneva.
"This ring isn't a promise that life will always be easy," he had said.
"It's a promise that whatever life becomes, we'll face it together."
A tear escaped before she could stop it.
"Did you mean it?" she whispered.
The silence answered her.
After several minutes, Clara stepped out of the car.
The cold air hit her immediately, but she barely noticed.
She walked toward the entrance of the estate, each step heavier than the last.
Luxury cars lined the circular driveway.
Fresh flowers decorated the front entrance.
Staff members hurried from one side of the mansion to the other, clearing away the final traces of the wedding celebration.
To everyone here...
Yesterday had been perfect.
Only Clara knew it had been built on a lie.
She had almost reached the front steps when she stopped.
Voices.
They were coming from the gardens.
Instinctively, she stepped behind one of the tall hedges bordering the stone pathway.
She knew she should leave.
She knew hiding was wrong.
But something inside her refused to move.
A familiar voice drifted through the winter air.
Lucien.
"...I don't understand."
His tone was calm, but Clara immediately heard something beneath it.
Confusion.
Not happiness.
Not the confidence of a newly married man.
Confusion.
Another voice answered.
It belonged to Eleanor Devereaux.
Lucien's mother.
"Perhaps you're simply exhausted."
"I've negotiated billion-euro contracts after staying awake for thirty-six hours," Lucien replied quietly.
"I know the difference between exhaustion and instinct."
Clara's heartbeat quickened.
She carefully leaned closer without revealing herself.
"I keep feeling that something is... different."
Eleanor remained silent.
Lucien continued.
"I've been telling myself it's because weddings are stressful."
He laughed softly.
"But the feeling won't go away."
Clara pressed a trembling hand against her mouth.
He had noticed.
Not immediately.
But he had noticed.
"What exactly feels different?" Eleanor asked gently.
Lucien didn't answer right away.
Finally, he spoke.
"It's difficult to explain."
He looked toward the gardens.
"It's small things."
"The way she speaks."
"The way she smiles."
"The pauses before she answers simple questions."
He frowned.
"Even the way she looks at me."
Clara closed her eyes.
Those were things no disguise could imitate.
"You've known Clara for years," Eleanor said.
"People behave differently after emotional events."
"I know."
Lucien sighed.
"That's what I keep telling myself."
He rubbed his forehead.
"But yesterday..."
His voice trailed off.
"What happened yesterday?" Eleanor asked.
Lucien hesitated.
"There were moments during the ceremony..."
"When I looked into her eyes..."
He searched for the right words.
"...and it felt as though I was looking at someone trying very hard to be brave."
He shook his head.
"No."
"That's not right."
"It felt as though she was afraid I would discover something."
Clara felt her breath catch.
Claire had fooled everyone else.
But not completely.
Not him.
Lucien had sensed the difference.
Not because of her face.
Because of her soul.
Eleanor rested a hand on her son's shoulder.
"You've both been under enormous pressure."
"Perhaps you're overthinking."
"Perhaps."
Lucien answered quietly.
"But Clara has never hidden anything from me."
He stared toward the frozen fountain in the center of the garden.
"And now..."
He paused again.
"...it feels like she's keeping an entire world from me."
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
He wasn't accusing her.
He was trying to understand.
For the first time since waking up, hope flickered inside her.
Maybe...
Maybe he hadn't betrayed her.
Maybe he had been deceived too.
Just then another voice interrupted them.
"Lucien."
Claire.
Clara stiffened instantly.
She slowly looked around the hedge.
Claire walked toward them wearing an elegant cream-colored coat.
To anyone else...
She looked exactly like Clara Beaumont.
But standing only a short distance away, the differences were impossible to ignore.
Claire carried herself with confidence.
Her posture was straighter.
Her smile was practiced.
Even the way she walked lacked Clara's quiet grace.
Lucien turned toward her politely.
"There you are."
Claire smiled.
"I've been looking everywhere for you."
Lucien nodded.
"I was speaking with Mother."
Claire slipped her arm through his naturally.
"So serious on the first morning of our marriage?"
She laughed softly.
Lucien smiled.
But something about the smile looked forced.
"I've always been serious."
"Not with me."
Claire squeezed his arm.
"You've always relaxed around me."
For the briefest moment...
Lucien looked at her strangely.
Not suspiciously.
Curiously.
As though trying to remember something.
Clara noticed it immediately.
So did Eleanor.
Before anyone spoke again, a member of the household staff approached hurriedly.
"Mr. Devereaux."
Lucien turned.
"What is it?"
"The florist has arrived to collect the arrangements."
"I'll be there in a moment."
The employee nodded and walked away.
Lucien looked back at Claire.
"I won't be long."
"I'll wait."
He nodded once before following the staff member toward the main entrance.
Claire watched him leave.
The pleasant smile slowly disappeared from her face.
Eleanor looked at her carefully.
"You should be patient."
Claire frowned.
"About what?"
"My son."
Claire folded her arms.
"I am being patient."
Eleanor's gaze remained steady.
"No."
"You are trying too hard."
Claire's expression tightened.
"I don't know what you mean."
"You will."
Without another word, Eleanor walked away, leaving Claire standing alone in the garden.
Hidden behind the hedge, Clara remained completely still.
Her heart was racing.
Everything she had believed only an hour ago had begun to change.
Lucien wasn't celebrating.
He wasn't pretending.
He wasn't acting like a man who had deliberately married another woman.
He was searching for answers.
And that meant one terrifying possibility remained.
He truly believed Claire was her.
Yet something inside him refused to accept it.
Clara looked once more toward the mansion.
She had come here determined to confront him.
To demand answers.
To accuse him if necessary.
Now...
She wasn't sure.
If she walked into the estate now and shouted the truth, would anyone believe her?
Or would they think grief had driven her into madness?
She lowered her head.
No.
She needed proof.
Not accusations.
Proof.
Only then could she reclaim the life that had been stolen from her.
With that realization, Clara quietly stepped away from the hedge and disappeared before anyone could see her.
to be continued ...
