Chapter 5 Continued

Margaux Beaumont moved gracefully through the breakfast room, acknowledging relatives with practiced warmth. She greeted elderly aunts with gentle embraces. She thanked distant cousins for traveling such long distances. She complimented the floral arrangements and reminded the staff to make sure every guest felt welcome. Anyone watching would have seen the picture of a devoted hostess. Elegant. Composed. A mother preparing for her daughter's wedding. No one noticed how carefully she observed every movement inside the room. Her eyes lingered on Clara for only a second before moving elsewhere. Just long enough. Never long enough to attract attention. "Margaux." She turned as one of Henri's cousins approached. "You must be proud." She smiled gracefully. "I am." "You've planned a remarkable celebration." "It has taken many months." "It will be unforgettable." "I certainly hope so." The conversation ended as naturally as it had begun. Margaux excused herself and continued through the room, her expression unchanged. Across the hall, Clara laughed at something Sophie had whispered. The sound carried softly through the mansion. Henri heard it. For reasons he couldn't explain, it made his heart unexpectedly heavy. He watched his daughter from across the room. She looked exactly as every father hoped his daughter would look before her wedding. Confident. Peaceful. Loved. He silently wished her mother would look at her the same way. Instead, Margaux seemed strangely distant despite remaining constantly present. It wasn't coldness. Not exactly. It was something Henri had stopped trying to define years ago. He pushed the thought aside. Today was not the day for old questions. Today belonged to Clara. ... Later that afternoon, Lucien arrived at the estate for the final rehearsal. The moment his car entered the circular driveway, several younger cousins rushed toward the entrance windows. "He's here." "The groom's arrived." Sophie smiled knowingly. "You have exactly three seconds before Clara disappears." "I do not." "You absolutely do." Before Clara could answer, she had already started walking toward the front entrance. Lucien stepped inside just as the doors opened. The noise surrounding them seemed to fade. Neither of them hurried. Neither of them cared that dozens of relatives were watching. They simply smiled. "There you are," Lucien said. "I've been looking forward to today." "So have I." He noticed the faint shadows beneath her eyes. "You really didn't sleep." She laughed. "I admitted that already." "You also promised to enjoy today." "I intend to." He reached for her hand naturally, as though it were the most ordinary thing in the world. For them... It was. Henri watched the exchange quietly. His younger brother leaned toward him. "They're good together." Henri nodded. "They make each other lighter." "I've rarely seen Lucien smile this much." "I've rarely seen Clara smile this much." The two men exchanged quiet smiles. Some things required no further explanation. ... The rehearsal took place inside the cathedral during the late afternoon. Sunlight filtered through stained-glass windows, casting brilliant colors across the polished stone floor. The priest welcomed both families warmly. "We're simply walking through tomorrow's ceremony." "No pressure." Several guests laughed. Lucien glanced sideways at Clara. "I think that's impossible." She smiled. "You nervous?" "A little." "I thought billion-euro negotiations prepared you for anything." "They didn't prepare me for you." She laughed quietly. The rehearsal began. They practiced the entrance. The vows. The exchange of rings. Where everyone would stand. At one point, Clara accidentally stepped on the edge of her practice gown. She stumbled slightly. Lucien caught her before she lost her balance. "You see?" he whispered. "I've already started." "Started what?" "Catching you whenever you fall." Her eyes met his. "I'll remember that." "I hope you never need to." Around them, relatives smiled at the exchange. Even the priest chuckled softly. "They're making my job very easy." ... As evening settled over Geneva, the Beaumont Estate prepared for the private wedding-eve dinner. Unlike tomorrow's grand reception, tonight was reserved only for close family and lifelong friends. Long tables were arranged beneath warm candlelight. Soft music drifted through the ballroom. Laughter echoed naturally from every corner. For Clara... It was perfect. No speeches. No formal announcements. Only conversation. Only family. Only love. She looked around the room and silently thanked God for bringing her to this moment. Everything she had hoped for seemed finally within reach. Tomorrow... She would begin the life she had always dreamed about. She did not know... That this peaceful evening would become the last untouched memory she would carry for many years. Tomorrow would not simply begin a marriage. Tomorrow would begin a mystery... One that would alter every life connected to the Beaumont name forever.
