Chapter 4 Continued

The next morning arrived wrapped in fresh snow. Sunlight spilled across the Beaumont Estate, turning the white gardens into a glittering landscape that looked almost unreal. By eight o'clock, the mansion was alive once again. Delivery vans entered through the front gates. Florists carried fresh arrangements into the ballroom. The catering staff inspected every dining table one final time. Servants moved quietly through the halls, polishing silverware and crystal until every piece reflected the morning light. The estate had become a carefully choreographed performance where every person knew exactly what had to be done. Clara stood on the terrace overlooking the gardens, a warm cup of tea resting between her hands. She loved mornings like this. Before conversations filled the house. Before schedules demanded her attention. Before everyone reminded her she was about to become a bride. For these few peaceful minutes, she was simply Clara. Footsteps approached behind her. "You escaped again." She smiled without turning. "I knew you'd find me." Sophie joined her at the railing. "I've checked three rooms already." "You worry too much." "It's literally my job this week." "I don't remember hiring you." "You didn't." "I volunteered." Clara laughed softly. "I'm very fortunate." "You are." Sophie looked toward the snow-covered gardens. "I've been thinking." "That sounds dangerous." "It usually is." "What happens after the wedding?" Clara looked at the horizon. "I'll move into the Devereaux Estate." "I'll probably spend weeks deciding where to put my books." "You'll definitely spend weeks." "I know." "And then?" Clara smiled. "I want ordinary days." "No photographers." "No formal dinners." "No pretending." "I want breakfast together." "Weekend walks." "Reading while he works beside me." "I want a life that feels real." Sophie watched her carefully. "You've never cared about the glamorous parts." "I've seen glamorous." "I know it doesn't guarantee happiness." A comfortable silence settled between them. Eventually Sophie asked, "Do you ever wonder why Lucien loves you so much?" Clara smiled. "Sometimes." "And?" "I've stopped trying to understand it." "I've decided to simply be grateful." Sophie shook her head. "That's not why." "No?" "He loves you because you never tried to become someone else." "You've always been exactly who you are." "And somehow..." She smiled warmly. "...that's what made him fall in love." Those words lingered in Clara's thoughts long after Sophie returned inside. Perhaps she was right. Love had never asked either of them to pretend. That was what made it feel so effortless. Late that morning, several members of the Devereaux family arrived to finalize the rehearsal arrangements. Warm greetings echoed through the entrance hall as staff welcomed the guests. Eleanor Devereaux embraced Clara the moment she entered. "My dear." "It's wonderful to see you." Clara smiled warmly. "You too." Eleanor stepped back to admire her. "Every time I see you, you look happier." "I feel happier." "I can tell." She linked her arm through Clara's. "Come." "I've been instructed to steal you for a few minutes." "By whom?" "My son." Clara laughed. "That sounds like Lucien." "He insisted." They found him waiting in the winter garden where sunlight filtered through the glass ceiling above. The moment he saw Clara, his face brightened. "There you are." She walked toward him. "I've been told you requested my presence." "I did." "Important business?" "The most important." She raised an eyebrow. "And what exactly is that?" "I wanted ten uninterrupted minutes with my fiancée." She smiled. "You cancelled meetings again, didn't you?" "Only two." "Lucien." "They'll survive." She laughed, shaking her head. "I don't know what your board thinks of me." "They're beginning to suspect you're the only person capable of changing my schedule." "And are they right?" "They're absolutely right." They wandered slowly through the winter garden. Snowflakes drifted softly beyond the glass walls while exotic flowers bloomed inside the warm conservatory. It felt like two seasons meeting in perfect harmony. Lucien stopped beside a small fountain. "I've been thinking about our honeymoon." "You've changed destinations three times." "Four." She laughed. "I can't keep up." "I finally decided." "Oh?" "We'll spend the first week somewhere no one knows us." "No interviews." "No invitations." "No business calls." "Just us." She smiled. "That sounds perfect." "It does." He looked at her thoughtfully. "I want our first days as husband and wife to belong only to us." She reached for his hand. "They will." For several moments, they simply stood together listening to the quiet sound of flowing water. Neither noticed Henri Beaumont watching discreetly from the opposite corridor. A faint smile crossed his face. Seeing his daughter this content eased something inside him. For the first time in many years, he allowed himself to believe that perhaps her future would be brighter than her past. He quietly walked away without disturbing them. Inside the ballroom, final preparations continued without pause. The wedding planner reviewed seating arrangements one last time. Musicians rehearsed the entrance processional. Photographers discussed camera positions. Every hour brought the ceremony closer. As evening approached, the estate gathered for a private family dinner before the official rehearsal the following day. Laughter filled the dining hall. Stories were exchanged. Old memories resurfaced. For a brief time, everything felt wonderfully ordinary. Clara looked around the long table. Lucien caught her eye and smiled. She smiled back. In that single glance, they shared an entire conversation without speaking. Soon. Very soon. That was all either of them could think. When dinner ended, Clara stepped onto the balcony outside her room one last time before sleeping. The estate below glowed beneath soft golden lights. Snow continued falling over the gardens in peaceful silence. She closed her eyes and whispered a quiet prayer. Not for wealth. Not for success. Only for the life she and Lucien had promised each other. Inside the mansion, lights gradually disappeared one room at a time until only the hallway lamps remained. The Beaumont Estate settled into silence once more. No one realized that while everyone prepared for a wedding... Another plan, hidden beneath smiles and careful appearances, was quietly moving toward its own appointed hour. Its first step had not yet been seen. Its purpose had not yet been understood. But when it finally revealed itself... Nothing within these ancient walls would ever be the same again.
