"She is safe," the officer called out, and the words hit me like a physical wave, my knees nearly buckling beneath the sudden, overwhelming force of relief.
Grace came running from the warehouse entrance moments later, her small face streaked with tears, her recital costume torn slightly at the hem, but her eyes lighting instantly the moment she saw me.
"Mommy," she sobbed, crashing into my arms with a force that nearly knocked me backward. "The lady said I had a sister. She said she would show me."
I held her fiercely, tears streaming freely down my own face, Julian's arms wrapping tightly around both of us, the three of us trembling together in the cold night air.
"You are safe now," I whispered against her hair. "Mommy and Daddy have you. You are safe."
