The room was still dark when Selene stood before the mirror, fastening her cloak. She moved quietly, her hands steady though her eyes were heavy. Liam lay on the bed, turned to the far side, silent. “Liam,” she called softly when she was done. He didn’t answer. “Liam,” she said again, firmer this time. Still no answer. His shoulders didn’t move. His breathing was even. She sighed, lingered a moment, then turned and stepped out of the chamber. In the courtyard, horses were being saddled.
