Mrs Echo

1124 Words
Reine's pov: I feel hands grab me and slam me to the ground. Shots ring out as my husband crawls on top of me. I have no time to think about the heat on top of me as my heart pounds in my chest. What the actual hell. Am I so unlucky? I curse within. The church falls into chaos as everyone around us scrambles to safety or for their guns, men flooding the building. "What's going on?" I hear my voice shout as he gets up quickly, his hands reaching for the gun in his pants. He shoves his hand into mine as he drags me behind a pillar. "Can you use a gun?" he asks. His gaze is so calm I wonder if he's actually here in this chaos. I nod my head as a gun is pressed into my hands. "I'll cover you," he says, his eyes searching around. I hear the sound of his gun click as he moves so fast, stepping in front of me. A man who was coming right to our corner drops. I move backwards as he falls forward, and I shove the gun from his hands. "I'll cover you," I hear him say again, my head pounding from the adrenaline rushing in. "Run straight to your father." I concentrate hard on the words he's saying, moving my gaze to where I see my father covered by his men, standing far back. He suddenly turns me back, pressing me to the wall as a bullet whizzes past my face. I raise my head to see a man loading near us. My hands raise before my head thinks. And I fire. The bullet hits him on the shoulder. He drops the gun from his hands and Damien turns so fast, another bullet firing hitting him straight in the chest. "Go," he says, pushing me forward. I hesitate for a second and hear myself whisper, "Don't die." And I do mean it. I am not ready to become a widow on my first day of marriage. I turn, running down to Father, then turn back and see him covering me from behind. I stop just short when I see a man creeping closer to him. My hands move to my hair instantly, removing the knife in it. I throw it. It slices through the air before it finds a home in his chest. Damien whips his head and finds my gaze. I smile at him and rush into the covering my father's guards have erected. I hear my dad cursing on the phone. "...on the grounds of Echo's territory. I want no media close by. We'll handle it." He looks at me, his gaze going over me, checking for injuries. Chaos is all around me. The smell of gunpowder, blood, and sweat fills my nose to the point I can't think straight. It takes only a few more rounds of gunshots before there is silence. My blood still throbs as the formation is dismissed. "There you are." I hear a voice behind me, sending a chill down my spine. I turn. Damien stares right at me. His face is dark, but his suit is still impeccable. I wonder if he was involved in the fight at all. His gaze moves over me. "You know this is stupidity?" my father roars. Damien doesn't take his eyes off me as my father continues. "This is going to be splashed all over the news tonight. Who in their right mind attacks a wedding?" Damien slowly drags his gaze from me to my father. "I'll handle it, Mr. Dawn. There will be no mention of the incident," he says. "Reine," he calls. "We have to leave." I stare. "What?" I hear myself reply. "You cannot be serious." How is he still so calm? "I am," he replies, turning like he's done with the discussion. "We might have to look more into this matter, it'll be better if..." He cuts Father off. "You don't have to worry, Mr. Dawn. I'll take care of everything. No one touches what's mine." "My men will stay behind, take count of the casualties". He continues, "Your sons are safe, no?" he asks. "They are," Father mutters, having no say in what's happening here. "Good," this infuriating man says. "Please," he gestures to me. I look at Father, hoping he would say something. He doesn't. So I follow him. He takes me to a car as one of his men opens the door. "Damon," I hear him call out. "Burn it all down." He steps into the vehicle and we zoom off. I stay quiet, watching him as he closes his eyes and leans back. What on earth is this calm? I ask myself for the nth time today. "Is there a problem?" I hear him mutter, his eyes still closed. "You tell me," I reply. "We had just been shot at and attacked on our wedding day and well..." I go quiet. He opens his eyes, turning towards me. "Well, what?" "Exactly," I tell him. "There's nothing. You dismissed everything and don't even seem worried that it happened." His gaze searches my face. "Are you scared, Reine?" he asks, his voice flat. "Any normal operating human would be, Mr. Echo. But you don't seem to be, so I'm assuming you're not normal," I snap, done with this bullshit. "I'm asking for answers or at least information. What the hell happened in there? Do you know?" And guess what? He leans back down and closes his eyes. My hands clench in my lap. I turn my head to the window, trying to calm myself down before I stab this specimen of a man. After some minutes, I hear his deep voice reverberate through the space. "I don't repeat myself. But I will just this once. I protect what's mine. You don't have to worry about these things. Do your duty and I'll do mine." My duty? Is this dude for real? "And what's my duty, Mr. Echo?" I sigh, my voice taking on a mocking lilt. "You'll find out soon enough, Mrs. Echo." My heart shudders at the way his voice deepens at that. Mrs Echo. We stay quiet the rest of the way back. Once the car slides into an open gate, a mansion sits stark in the middle of an open garden. It finally hits me. I am married. And not to just anybody but the heir to the Echo Family. My mind races through everything that has happened today and I ask myself... What the hell have I gotten into? Who the hell has this amount of men patrolling their premises? And more importantly.... Why the hell was I attacked on my f*****g wedding day?!
