DVR works continuously without stopping for 24 hours to process and save CCTV footage to the hard disk. With high intensity of use, the data stored on the hard disk also quickly accumulates among each other.

The hard disk on the DVR has different capacity limits, depending on the size of the memory provided. For example, 64 GB, 1 TB, up to 4 TB. Image quality and resolution also affect this storage.

The better the image quality and the higher the resolution, the larger the file size that must be stored. So, there is less space left on the hard disk to do a full 24 hours of storage.

As a result, surveillance camera recordings will be easily lost because they are automatically deleted by the hard disk to make more space for storing subsequent recordings. Lost CCTV footage will be very detrimental if the recording is related to something important, for example, a crime or a lost item.

To prevent this, you can back up the recorded files. Namely moving some old CCTV recording data to a device with larger storage space, such as a computer, PC, tab, or another hard disk with a larger size.

The cause of the loss of surveillance camera footage can also be due to overheating or heat buildup on the hard disk which causes interference to damage to the hard disk. This damage can make data scattered, corrupted, and reduced in quality.

Hard disks in circulation and CCTV mostly still use hard disks for PCs. On a PC or computer, the hard disk is more read than write and store data as in CCTV. This significant difference makes the hard disk performance very different and easily damaged in the use of CCTV.

To prevent this, you can use a hard disk that is specifically for CCTV use. On a PC or computer, the hard disk does not work for a full 24 hours, according to the use of the owner. Also, a computer never functions for 24 hours non-stop.

Special hard disks for CCTV are indeed resistant to overheating, allowing these devices to be used at high intensity.

Now, let's calculate the lifespan of CCTV footage on a hard disk. Generally, a hard disk with a storage capacity of 512 GB can record 4 CCTV cameras or 4 camera channels for up to 7 days or one week.

Which means:

512 GB divided by 4 = 128. So, for one CCTV camera, you need at least 128 GB of memory to record for 7 days.

128 GB divided by 7 = 18.2 GB. So to record in one day or 24 hours, CCTV requires the availability of memory of up to 18 GB.

The calculation above is only a rough calculation and you have to look at the type of CCTV you are using, how many FPS there are, the video quality that the surveillance camera is using – MKV, MP4, H256, and the resolution of the existing video recordings.
