CHAPTER 3

Her new husband did not come to the court to sign the papers with her. He had already signed the document and returned it to the court; the things nepotism could do. She did not care though, she just wanted it over with. She eased into the back of the black limousine and greeted the chauffeur who gave her a nod in response. A pink paring knife, a gift from Ian, rested in her garter belt. She patted it to be certain it was in place. It was. The drive to Hozier seraphine's home was quiet and long. She looked outside, marking out landmarks under heavy eyelids. She counted 30 trees before she turned to look ahead, head tilted slightly. "Thank you, uh I didn't get your name before?" She asked as she glanced at her LV mini moon bag "Louie, ma'am." "Yes, thank you, Louie" She said as the front door of the house flung open and a man, in a suit, came forward. She watched him raise his hand, slightly, and two people, a man and a woman in suit, filed out. They walked to the boot of the limousine and pulled out her box. "Careful with it." She said when the man pulled her favorite pink Louis Vuitton box. She did not need scratches on it. He grunted with a nod. The man that clapped earlier stood before her before giving her a bow. "Welcome to the Seraphine mansion, Mrs Seraphine. I am Remington, the butler and it will be a pleasure to serve you." He said. "Hello, Remington.’’ She said, crinkling her nose. He offered his hand which she took before he lead her up the stairs. Remington was formal, as expected. The door flung open as they got to it. Remington reached for a switch and a woman appeared a few seconds later. She was a rather small woman, though most women were short compred to Yezebel's 5'9 self. The woman gave her a polite smile. "This is Adeline. She will serve as your maid." Remington announced. "A pleasure to meet you, Mrs Seraphine." Adeline said with a polite smile. "Nice to meet you, Adeline." Yezebel said, barely holding in a yawn. "Would you like a tour or a meal?" Adeline asked as Remi retreated. "Probably a bed." Yezebel replied. "Yes of course." Adeline said as she led her up the stairs. Yezebel stared at her black hair cut into a bob, a really perfect bob. They arrived at a big door which Yezebel barely spared it a glance as Adeline threw the door open. Her eyes went to the queen sized bed with hunger but she needed to wash her face and apply sunscreen. Her face felt dirty, oily. "I'll leave you to it, Mrs seraphine." Adeline said. "Yes. And Addie?" "Yes Mrs seraphine." Addie replied, obviously surprised at the nickname. "Call me Yezebel or Yez." Yez said before shooing her away. She did not need formalities here, She needed to buddy up with the workers. Adeline closed the door with a faint smile and Yez stalked towards the bathroom. She would explore this room and the whole house, later. She opened the door to her far left and sighed at the white walls. The walls in her cottage house were colorful, pink, purple, baby blue all made up the colors there. This room did not have any colors. Talk about minimalism. She would prefer to have a little color in the room. She double cleansed her face, sighing at the feeling before going to bed. She was too tired to moisturize her face. A knock on my door woke her up about three hours later. "Who?" She asked. "Adeline, ma." "Come in, please." She said and Adeline walked in. She c****d her head in inquiry. "Mr seraphine has wished to see you." Adeline said. She barely stopped herself from snorting. The balls on this man, to order her when he did not have the dignity to show up at the wedding. She squinted at Adeline. "Where is he?'' She asked "In his library," "How scared are are you of Seraphine?" Yezebel asked. "Not enough to s**t -excuse my French- my panties." Adeline replied. "Good. Tell him I said he should wish hard enough and maybe I might come." She said, waving her away. She saw a small smile make its way to Adeline's face before she schooled her face. "Would you like to eat?" "Yes, actually." "In here?" "No, I'd like to see the house after eating." I replied and Adeline nodded. "Your food will be ready in ten minutes so you can make your way downstairs by then." Adeline said and Yezebel nodded. Adeline left. She had the ugly need to call Ian, but she could not. Not until the job was over. And that was reason enough her to hurry up. She missed him already. And maybe she missed Ezio too. She knew telling her husband to literally f**k himself was not a good start but had felt insulted. She had been insulted all her life and now, as she could stand up for herself, she would not have it. Besides, she did not need his favour or affection to get the job done. He does not seem to be interested in making the marriage good enough. And seduction was not her forte. She had had a horrible week of meeting Harlem Seraphine. He was a rather handsome man with a peculiar shade of white at the front of his jet black hair. For a man in his sixties, he looked decent. He made no comments about his son or his absence and she did not ask. She was pissed off enough that she had to use her real name for this mission, whatever the f**k was the boss thinking? He said the Seraphine family was a rather public one and she could not use a pseudonym. A pseudonym would have no years long history of good deeds like Yezebel Okuro did and people ould definitely be curious about the new addition to the Seraphine household. They did not need errors. It seemed true but she did not like it. She had been introduced to Harlem as the Boss' goddaughter and she could remember trying to connect this handsome man to the monster that she was supposed to investigate and kill. She sighed and threw on a pink ruffle miniskirt and a long sleeved shirt. Pulling her new iPhone to myself, she made her way downstairs, slowly. She looked around, eyeing spots for cameras. The house was smaller than the average house of wealthy people she knew. At least, tht of people sitting on billions of US dollars. It had only one floor and there were a few cameras in each corner of the house. It was a bland house, minimalist in nature. Of course it was modern to the core but the lack of colors irritated her. The kitchen was the same bland color, bland tile walls and a Long Island in the middle. She liked her place with colors. But this was not hers. "I'll eat here." She said, glancing at Adeline. Adeline nodded and placed the tray, gently, before her. She raised a brow at the food as she sniffed. It smelled really good, she gave Adeline an embarrassed smile. It was a simple meal, chicken in celery sauce and a little bit of boiled rice. Adeline dropped a bottle of water and a glass of wine by her side. "No juice or something of that sort?" Yezebel asked. "Apple juice, ma'am?" "Yez and yes." She said and smiled as she realized what she she. Adeline smiled too. "Yes, Yez." Adeline said before putting a glass of apple juice close to me. She nodded at the food as a compliment and Adeline nodded in appreciation. "You know you're quiet...brave." Adeline said. Yezebel raised a brow as she stuffed her mouth "Here, eating even though Mr Seraphine called to see you." "If he wants to see me, I assume he'd come, no?" Yezebel shrugged as she downed the apple juice. She took a sip of water. "I assume so. Mr Seraphine is stubborn" Adeline said and she resisted the urged to ask questions about it. She did not need to pry so early, not when the grounds of their-Yezebel and Adeline- relationship was not established. "So am I." Yezebel replied. She was not exactly stubborn, she just did not want to be pushed over if she could help it. She would be living with this man for a couple weeks, she did not need him thinking that she was a pushover. Besides, a woman of her alledged upbring-the goddaughter of the Boss- was expected to be strongheaded, not weakwilled or easy to order around. The kitchen door swung open and she raised her head to stare. She had not even heard footsteps right before it opened. But there he was, his dark eyes burrowed into her. He was wearing glasses but she could feel the intensity of his stare. His lips were heavy lower lips and downward at the same time but right now, they were pressed into a thin line. He pinched the bridge of his nose and she looked at his ringed fingers, so many rings in one hand. He glared at her. "I asked to see you." He said. She shook her head, gently before turning to pick out a bottle of water in an Evian bottle. "I gave a reply, no?" She asked as she twisted the cap. Adeline stilled behind her. She was used to snobby, rich people on the job but she would not stand this one, especially from someone she dumped her freedom because he or his father were fuckass people. The last thing she would accept was disrespect. She glared at him just as he schooled his features into a blank slate. He was wearing an overcoat. She stood up and walked past him. He was tall, a couple inches taller than her. "Do not walk out on me." He said behind her and she almost jumped. What the hell was wrong with him and why did he keep sneaking around her and succeeding? "Stop sneaking up on me or-" I'll put a bullet or two in your pretty head. She did not complete the statement. She took a deep breath. "I am not sneaking up on you, you just lack caution." She almost laughed in his face. She did know something funny, that an assasin cautiously snuck into his life before his eyes and she could show him caution right now by carving his face in. "Are you listening to me?" He asked. "Excuse you?" Yezebel asked "I wanted to speak to you." He gritted out. "Would have preferred that at the court, no?” She said as began making her way upstairs. She felt a burn on her hand just before she felt herself being pulled back. She pulled her hand away from him " I had my reasons." He said and she raised a brow. "For not being at the wedding." She looked at him from the soles of his feet, moving her eyes slowly to the crown of his head before smiling, gently; the same smile she gave to Joseph Ahitophel, though not as lethal. "It's nothing I care for." She said before leaving. And truly, she did not. He did not stop her this time.
