As the monsoon's warmth began to fade, ushering in winter's chill, Avni and Aayush's daily ritual remained a constant, a beacon of joy in their lives. Avni's hands moved with purpose, crafting a special lunchbox for Aayush. The aroma of freshly cooked chapatis and sabji wafted through the air, mingling with her excitement. With a spring in her step, Avni arrived at the bus stop, her eyes scanning the horizon for Aayush's familiar figure. But he was nowhere to be seen. Disappointment etched on her face, she thought, "Maybe he won't come today." Her heart sank, her smile faltering. Just as she was about to lose hope, a faint voice called out, "Avni!" She turned, and her heart skipped a beat. Aayush emerged from the distance, his eyes sparkling with apology, his face flushed from running. As he approached, his words tumbled out in a rush, his chest heaving with deep breaths. "So sorry I'm late today..." Avni's face softened, her concern replacing disappointment. "It's okay, don't apologize. Just catch your breath first," she said, her smile radiant, her eyes shining with warmth. Aayush's gaze met hers, and for a moment, time stood still. The world around them melted away, leaving only the two of them, suspended in a sea of connection. Avni's heart swelled with happiness, her pulse racing with excitement. Avni's eyes sparkled as she handed Aayush her water bottle, watching with delight as he drank, his throat moving with each swallow. "I thought you wouldn't come today," she said, her voice tinged with playful teasing, her smile hinting at relief. Aayush handed the bottle back, his fingers grazing hers, sending shivers down her spine. "How could I miss your food?" he asked, his eyes crinkling, his voice low and gentle. Unspoken words lingered in his gaze: "Meeting you is my daily solace." As the bus arrived, they seized the opportunity to sit together, their hands almost touching. Avni's heart skipped a beat. But Aayush, ever the gentleman, subtly shifted, creating a small distance between their hands. His considerate nature left Avni breathless. As they rode, Avni stole glances at Aayush, drinking in the sharp planes of his face, the gentle curve of his lips. Whenever his gaze drifted away, she admired him, her heart swelling with affection. Aayush, too, couldn't resist Avni's charm. Whenever her attention wandered, his eyes sought her out, softening as he took in the gentle contours of her face. Their silent admiration was a tender dance, a give-and-take of glances and smiles. As Avni and Aayush stepped off the bus, the warm sunlight danced across their faces. Saurabh's enthusiastic voice pierced the air, shattering the tranquility. "Hey Avni, what's today?" he asked, eyes sparkling with excitement. Avni smiled warmly, her hands busy unpacking the lunchbox from her purse. "I brought lunch for you today," she said, handing it over to Saurabh. Her eyes met Aayush's, and for a fleeting moment, they shared a connection. But before she could leave for the station, Aayush's sudden grasp on her hand halted her. "Wait," he whispered, his touch sending shivers down her spine. Avni's heart skipped a beat as their palms touched for the first time. "What?" she asked, her voice barely audible, her eyes locked on his. Aayush released her hand, striding away. "Sorry, wait a minute," he said, his voice low and gentle. Avni's curiosity piqued as she watched him confer with Saurabh. Saurabh's surprise was palpable. "What's gotten into you, man?" he asked, eyes wide with incredulity. Aayush's response was firm. "I'll drop her to work by bike." His tone brooked no argument. Saurabh's eyes widened further. "What? What's happened to you suddenly?" he asked, his voice laced with concern. Aayush's tone remained calm. "Do you have a problem?" he asked, his gaze piercing. Saurabh hesitated. "No, but still..." His voice trailed off. Aayush's determination prevailed. "Give me the key." His words were laced with a sense of purpose. As Aayush returned to Avni, his eyes shone with resolve. "Today, I'll drop you to work," he said, his voice firm. Avni's confusion deepened. "No, Aayush, I'll take the train," she protested, her voice laced with hesitation. Aayush's words dripped with sincerity. "Please, Avni, let me do something for you. You always bring something for me." His gaze held hers, his eyes pleading. Saurabh chimed in, "Yeah, I'll sit with Rahul or Sushant." His smile was knowing, as if he sensed the shift in Aayush's demeanor. Avni's resolve crumbled under Aayush's gentle persistence. "Okay, but just for today," she agreed, her voice barely above a whisper. Aayush's face lit up. "I'll bring the bike," he said, sprinting away. Avni waited, her mind a whirlwind of confusion. She had agreed, but doubts lingered. Suddenly, Aayush appeared, his bike roaring to life. Her heart skipped a beat as their eyes met. "He's looking so good, but that's not the time to think this, Avni," she chided herself, flushing. Aayush's voice broke the spell. "Sit," he said, his eyes sparkling with warmth. Avni's hesitation was palpable. "Aayush, I've never sat on a bike," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. Aayush's expression turned reassuring. "Don't worry, keep your hand on my shoulder. First, place one leg on the stand down there, and then sit," he explained, his tone gentle. Avni took a deep breath, her hand trembling as she touched Aayush's shoulder. A jolt of electricity ran through her. She sat on the bike, her legs gracefully positioned on one side, as Indian women often do. "Comfortable?" Aayush asked, his eyes scanning her face. Avni smiled, her cheeks warming. "Yes, but please be slow," she pleaded, her voice laced with anxiety. Aayush chuckled, his eyes crinkling. "Obviously," he said, his laughter low and soothing. He admired her, his gaze softening. She looked adorable, her uncertainty endearing. As they set off, Avni's heart pounded. The wind whipped through her hair, and Aayush's warmth enveloped her. She felt alive, her senses heightened. Aayush adjusted the rearview mirror, his eyes locking onto Avni's. The distance between them was minimal, their bodies almost touching. Avni's heart fluttered as she met his gaze. The clear blue sky above sparked a thought. "How do you commute on rainy days?" Avni asked, her curiosity piqued. Aayush chuckled, his eyes crinkling. "Sometimes we get soaked, and sometimes we wear raincoats," he replied, his voice low and soothing. Avni's concern was palpable. "Don't you get cold after getting wet?" Aayush's smile was warm. "A hot cup of chai always saves the day," he said, his eyes sparkling with memories. Avni's thoughts drifted to their shared moments at the tea shop. She smiled, her cheeks warming. The ride was smooth, the wind whispering through her hair. Avni didn't want it to end, savoring the closeness to Aayush. "From here?" Aayush asked, breaking into her reverie. Avni pointed, her hand brushing against his. "Take the left, my building is the third one." Aayush nodded, his eyes never leaving hers. The bike slowed, and Avni's heart sank, reluctant to part from the intimate atmosphere. As they reached Avni's workplace, a crowd of people swarmed the entrance. Aayush expertly applied the brakes, but Avni's momentum carried her forward, her body pressing against his. She instinctively grasped his shoulders, her fingers digging deep into his T-shirt. Aayush's apologetic eyes met hers. "So sorry," he whispered, his voice husky. Avni's smile was reassuring. "It's okay," she said, understanding the situation. As they came to a stop, Avni's friends gathered around, curiosity etched on their faces. Avni introduced them, her gestures fluid. "Good morning, Aayush. These are my friends Rupali, Saniya, Abhinav Bhaiya, and Vishal. And he's Aayush, my friend." The group exchanged greetings, their expressions a mix of surprise and curiosity. Aayush's departure was abrupt, but his eyes lingered on Avni. "I should leave now. Bye," he said, his voice low. The group echoed their goodbyes, but Avni's gaze followed Aayush as he pulled away. Her eyes sparkled with a newfound connection, her heart still racing from their intimate ride. As they entered the office, Avni's friends bombarded her with questions. "Who was he?" they asked in unison. Avni's smile was radiant. "He's my friend, I introduced you all, didn't I?" She played it cool, but her happiness was palpable. Rupali raised an eyebrow. "We know that, but Avni, you barely interact with guys. What's special about him?" Avni's silence spoke volumes, but before she could respond, her boss arrived. "What a surprise! You're on time, Avni," he said, his tone approving. "Thank you, sir. I'll try to maintain it," Avni replied, her professionalism intact. Vishal's jealousy simmered, his eyes narrowing. He had always harbored feelings for Avni, but she had never reciprocated. Now, seeing her with someone else was unbearable. "Is he your boyfriend?" Vishal asked, his tone laced with hostility. Avni's patience snapped. "What the hell? He's none of your business! Who are you to ask?" She glared at Vishal, her voice rising. Rupali swiftly intervened, dragging Avni to a secluded office corner, away from curious eyes. "Avni, calm down, I've got this," she urged, concern etched on her face. Avni's anger seethed, her voice trembling. "Rupali, stop him! He's suffocating me! I've always respected his feelings, but he's crossing lines!" Vishal's fury erupted, his hands grasping Avni's cheeks like a vice. Her hair clip shattered, sending strands tumbling down. He slammed her against the wall her dupatta falling down from her shoulder, his eyes blazing with possessive intensity. "Don't you understand my feelings?" Vishal's voice was venomous, his words dripping with entitlement. "You don't respect me. If you did, you'd have accepted my proposal. What's lacking in me? I'm handsome, wealthy, and my parents would accept you, despite your age." Abhinav rushed to intervene, grasping Vishal's arms, but Vishal shoved him away, his strength sending Abhinav stumbling back. "Vishal, stop!" Abhinav warned, regaining his footing. "You're crossing a line!" But Vishal wouldn't be stopped. Avni's eyes flashed with rage, her face burning with humiliation. She summoned all her strength, pushing Vishal back with fierce determination. Saniya's voice pierced the air, shrill with concern. "Vishal, stop! Are you mad?" Abhinav's grip on Vishal tightened, his expression stern. "What's wrong with you, man? You're hurting her!" Rupali gently wiped the blood from Avni's lip, her eyes locked on Vishal's face. "Avni, are you okay?" Avni's voice dripped with venom, her words laced with deep-seated pain. "For this, Vishal Shinde, I reject you. Again and again, I'll reject you. I knew this darkness lurked within you. You're not worthy of my respect, let alone my love." Vishal's face contorted, his eyes bulging with anger and humiliation. Abhinav's grip restrained him, but Avni's words delivered the devastating blow. The scene was frozen, with Avni's friends aghast at Vishal's brutality. The air reeked of tension, Avni's rejection hanging like a challenge. Avni's eyes blazed with indignation as she turned to Saniya and Rupali. "Is this the man you wanted me to marry? He thinks I'm a slut, a commodity to be used and discarded!" Saniya and Rupali exchanged horrified glances, their faces pale. "Avni, we had no idea," Rupali whispered, her voice trembling. "We never thought he was capable of this." Avni's gaze shifted to Vishal, her voice dripping with contempt. "If you ever lay a hand on me again, Vishal Shinde, I'll make sure you're removed from this team. I'll report your behavior to our boss, and you'll face the consequences." Vishal's face twisted in a snarl, but Avni's words left him cowed. Abhinav released his grip, stepping back as Avni continued. "Leave him, Abhinav. If he had the guts to do something, he would have done it before. He's nothing but a coward, using physical strength to intimidate women." Avni escaped to the washroom, her heart still racing from the confrontation. She splashed water on her face, trying to wash away the tears and the shame. But the marks on her cheeks remained, a constant reminder of Vishal's brutality. Taking a deep breath, she steeled herself and returned to her workstation, determined to not let him win. Meanwhile, Abhinav's anger boiled over as he confronted Vishal. "I told you so many times, she's not interested! But you just couldn't accept it, could you?" Abhinav's words were laced with disgust as he pushed Vishal, his hands trembling with rage. Vishal's face twisted in a snarl, but Abhinav's words cut deep. Saniya intervened, placing a calming hand on Abhinav's arm. "Stop, Abhinav. Leave it. This isn't the time or place." As Avni and her colleagues departed for their workstations, Vishal stood alone in the corridor, a testament to the turmoil that had unfolded. The whispers and stares of their coworkers followed Avni like a shadow, but she stood tall, her spirit unbroken. Her face, once a canvas of beauty, now bore the painful reminders of Vishal's brutality. The mark had begun to fade, but the swollen corner of her lip remained, a poignant reminder of the morning's events. Avni's silence was deafening, her lunch untouched, her eyes fixed on the task at hand. As the day drew to a close, Avni packed her belongings and slipped away, unnoticed by her colleagues. Rupali and Saniya huddled in hushed conversation, their words dripping with curiosity. "Why did Avni come with that guy?" Rupali whispered, her brow furrowed in judgement. "That's why Vishal got angry." Abhinav's voice rose in defense, his eyes flashing with protectiveness. "He's not her husband. She has every right to choose her own friends." Saniya's voice dripped with malice. "She barely talks to men, so who is this guy? Didn't that raise suspicions?" she asked Abhinav, her eyes narrowing. Abhinav's expression remained steadfast. "Yes, it crossed my mind, but it's her choice. We shouldn't judge." Rupali's words cut deep, her tone laced with disdain. "People will assume he's her boyfriend, or worse, that she's... promiscuous. She's asking for trouble." Abhinav's eyes flashed with defensiveness. "What are you guys talking? She's our Avni, our friend. We know her." Saniya's tone turned condescending. "Avni's grown up, Abhinav. She should know better. She's not a kid anymore; she should know her limits." Just then, Avni reappeared, her eyes locking onto her friends. The water bottle she had left behind now seemed like a painful reminder of their betrayal. Her heart shattered into pieces. "So, you guys wore masks of fake smiles," Avni said, her voice trembling, tears welling up in her eyes. Her words hung in the air, a stark reminder of the pain and betrayal she felt. Avni's dignity and self-respect had been shattered by the very people she trusted. Avni's slender fingers wrapped around the water bottle as she turned to leave, her eyes welling up with tears. The first droplets fell, rolling down her cheeks like rivulets of pain. She hastily wiped them away, but more followed, a relentless torrent of sorrow. With each step, her tears flowed faster, as if the dam of her emotions had finally burst. She brushed them away with the back of her hand, her movements frantic, desperate to stem the tide.
