Chapter Three -The Peace Offering

1556 Words
Ember’s POV The knock came before dawn. Hard, sharp, a sound that didn’t ask for permission—it demanded obedience. I jerked upright. I’d been lost in thought and kept him waiting outside my door for hours. My heart pounded in my throat. My room was still cloaked in shadows, the faint silver of the moon leaking through the window. I sat frozen until the voice followed, low and clipped. “You’ve been summoned. How dare you keep me waiting? How dare you keep the Alpha and his council waiting?” The messenger's impatient voice sounded from the other side of the door. The messenger’s footsteps retreated, boot heels clicking against the stone. I sat there trembling, clutching the blanket until my knuckles ached. I've been summoned, By this hour. My hand found the pendant at my throat, the silver disc warm from my skin. My father’s crest. His voice whispered in my memory, strong and certain: “Never forget your worth, Ember. Even when the world tries to strip it away. You are worth more than they can ever know. I hope you know it.” Worthless. That was what everybody called me now. The whispers hadn’t stopped since Jamie’s rejection last night. Everywhere I was spotted, wolves always had something to say about the orphan who reached too high. But I never reached, that was the thing. Just a few weeks after my father's death, after the death of Jamie’s father, Silvercrest suddenly forgot the two pups that were in love. The same people who treated me with respect and adoration suddenly turned their back on me. Now they wanted me gone. I forced myself to rise, my numb fingers pulling a simple gray dress over my head. My wedding gown still lay in a heap on the floor where I had torn it off. Right now it was a torn lace and a symbol of shattered promises. When I stepped out into the predawn air, the village stirred like restless vultures. Wolves leaning against walls, mothers clutching their children, warriors with mocking eyes. Their whispers followed me like a trail of ash. “She deserved to be rejected…” “She thought she’s untouchable.” “She’s a worthless girl. The rejected bride.” I pulled my shoulders back, even as the words cut into me, raw and deep. Every step to the council hall felt like walking barefoot over broken glass. The great hall loomed, its high doors carved with the crest of Silvercrest Pack—two wolves circling the moon. My father had once stood tall here, as a respected Beta. Now, his daughter walked in as nothing but a stain of shame. The guards swung the doors open as I forced my chin high and entered. The chamber buzzed with life. Elders sat in their semicircle, cloaked in ceremonial robes. The fire pit blazed in the center, its smoke coiling into the rafters. Warriors lined the walls, and on the raised dais—Jamie. My breath hitched. He sat on the Alpha’s throne, already cloaked in the weight of it. Lisa sat beside him, her gown glimmering like armor, her posture that of a queen already crowned. Sasha leaned against the railing, her smile sharp and hungry. She drank in my shame like fine wine. “Ember Lane,” the eldest councilor intoned, his voice echoing off the stone. “You will stand before the Alpha and his council.” I moved forward, every step heavy, until I stood in the circle of firelight. My hands trembled, so I clenched them in my skirts. Jamie’s eyes met mine—empty, cold. No trace of the boy who had once held my hand beneath willow trees and looked at me like I meant the world to him. His silence was worse than any cruelty. The council began to speak of me as though I were not there at all. “What should be done to her? She is a liability.” the first one spoke up. “A distraction, and an embarrassment after last night.” “She cannot remain in Silvercrest. It would fester unrest. I am sure she is already bitter, plotting her revenge against the crown and the entire pack.” another one replied. They all nodded in unison, their words swirled like poison, as I swayed under the weight of them. My wolf whimpered, too broken to lift her voice. But it wasn't over. Lisa rose. “My lords,” she said sweetly, her voice sweet like honey laced with venom. “If I may, I believe I have a solution to offer.” Every head turned. She glowed in the firelight, smug, radiant, untouchable. “Silvercrest has suffered raids on our borders. Who leads them? Who sends them?” She paused for effect, her eyes sliding to mine with a flicker of cruel delight. “The Black Fang Pack. Their ruthless, unrelenting Alpha, Jayden, Alpha Jayden has no wolf voice, no mate. And rumor whispers that he's looking for something. The only thing that can make him happy.” She folded her hands delicately, like she was presenting a gift. “He needs a breeder. Something to bear him an heir. What better peace offering is there than this one?” She gestured toward me, her smile sweet as rot. “She is unwanted, humiliated. But young and fertile. She should be out to good use. She should be allowed to serve Silvercrest. If not as a Luna… but as a peace offering. As the price we have to pay to make peace return to our land.” The words struck like a slap. My vision blurred. The council murmured with approval, nodding, exchanging satisfied looks. “Brilliant.” “Wise.” “An end to bloodshed, in one stroke.” Sasha clapped slowly, mockingly, her grin wide. “Inspired, Lisa. Truly. This will cleanse our shame and forge peace.” The crowd outside the hall roared when word reached them, their cheers rising like thunder as they applauded my ruin. “No…” The whisper slipped from me, cracked and broken. Then louder: “No! This is not our land Lisa. This is my land. She doesn't belong here. I do. I will not be shipped off to another pack as a sacrifice. Never.” All heads snapped toward me. My voice echoed through the chamber. “You would give me to him?” I demanded, my chest heaving. “To the Alpha who ordered the raid that murdered my father? He is the reason why Jamie’s father, our Alpha, is dead. He is the monster who drowned this land in blood. And you want to give one of your own to him?” “Watch your tongue,” an elder snapped. “We have another Alpha now. His son.” I staggered back, shaking my head violently. “I will not go to him. I will not be his breeder. I swear! I will never go there unless I am being dragged by my hair and handed over to him.” “You have no choice,” another said coldly. “Disobedience is treason.” “No. Please. I’ll leave!” I cried, desperation clawing through me. “I’ll go into exile. I’ll leave and never show my face here again. Please. Just don’t… don’t give me to him.” Laughter rippled through the hall. “Look at how ungrateful she is.” “She should be honored to serve her pack.” “Better use for her than rotting here.” My knees trembled, but I forced myself upright. “Please,” I whispered, looking to the throne. “Jamie…” For one flicker of a moment, I thought I saw hesitation in his eyes. My heart leapt, desperate. But then his jaw tightened. His gaze hardened to stone. His voice cut through the chamber. “It is done.” The words shattered me. The council rose, their verdict final. “You will leave immediately, under guard, to Black Fang territory. There will be no delay. We will not give you a chance to run.” My chest hollowed. My wolf curled into silence. Still, in the emptiness, I whispered to myself: I won't let them break me. No. This isn’t the end. But it felt like a lie. Back in my chamber, I moved like a ghost. I packed what little I owned—simple dresses, worn boots, the pendant I never let go. The wedding gown remained on the floor, torn and stained, like a corpse of dreams. I paused at the window. The city spread below, city lights, the moon casting silver across the rooftops. This had been my home, my prison, my dream. And now, my grave. I pressed my father’s pendant to my lips, tears streaking my cheeks. “If I survive him,” I whispered, my voice raw, “I will come back. And they will all regret what they’ve done.” A knock rattled the door, cold and final. “Time to leave.” I wiped my face, lifted my chin, and wrapped my fingers around the pendant. Then I walked toward the gates, each step carrying me closer to the monster who had destroyed my family—and now, the monster who would claim me.
