Ava knew that if she was going to move forward, she needed to be honest with Liam. The thought of hurting him made her stomach turn, but she also knew that leading him on would be worse. He deserved the truth, even if it would break both of their hearts.
They met at the park again, the familiar spot where they had shared so many of their childhood memories. Liam sat on the bench, waiting for her, his expression calm but hopeful. Ava’s heart clenched as she approached him, already dreading the conversation she was about to have.
"Liam," she began softly, sitting down beside him. "I need to talk to you about something."
Liam turned to her, his eyes warm and understanding as always. "I’ve been waiting for you to say that."
Ava’s throat tightened, and she struggled to find the right words. "You know I care about you more than anything. You’ve been my best friend for so long, and you’ve always been there for me, even when I didn’t deserve it."
Liam’s face remained steady, but his eyes darkened as if he already knew what was coming.
"But..." Ava’s voice wavered. "I’ve realized that my feelings for you are different from the way you feel about me. I love you, Liam, but it’s not the kind of love that you deserve. I can’t be the person you want me to be, no matter how much I wish I could."
Liam was silent for a long moment, his gaze fixed on the ground. When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet but steady. "You’re choosing him, aren’t you?"
Ava swallowed the lump in her throat. "Yes," she whispered, her heart breaking for him. "I’m choosing Jason."
Liam nodded slowly, his jaw tightening. "I guess I always knew, deep down. Even before Jason came into the picture, I think I knew that you didn’t love me the way I loved you."
Tears welled up in Ava’s eyes, and she reached for his hand. "I’m so sorry, Liam. I never wanted to hurt you."
He squeezed her hand gently, his expression softening as he looked at her. "I know, Ava. And I don’t regret loving you, even if it didn’t turn out the way I hoped. You’ll always be a part of my life, no matter what."
They sat in silence for a while, the weight of their unspoken history hanging in the air. Eventually, Liam stood up, offering Ava a sad but sincere smile. "I hope you find happiness, Ava. You deserve it."
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving her sitting on the bench, her heart heavy with both relief and sorrow.
