Part 4: A Complicated Confession

563 Words
For the next few days, Ava couldn’t get Liam off her mind. Every time she thought of his hurt expression, her heart clenched with guilt. Jason had been kind and attentive, continuing to spend time with her, and part of her appreciated his persistence. But something didn’t feel right. She was sitting on her bed one evening, scrolling through old pictures of her and Liam on her phone, when there was a knock at the door. Her heart skipped a beat. She knew who it was before she even opened it. Liam stood there, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his shoulders hunched slightly as if he’d been carrying the weight of the world since the night in the kitchen. "Ava, can we talk?" His voice was quiet, but there was an urgency in his eyes. Ava nodded, stepping aside to let him in. She closed the door behind him, her heart racing as she prepared herself for the conversation she had been avoiding. Liam walked to the center of the room, turning to face her, his eyes searching hers. "Look," he began, running a hand through his hair, "I’m sorry about the other night. I didn’t mean to make things awkward for you. But I can’t keep pretending like I don’t feel something more for you." Ava’s breath hitched. She had known this was coming, but hearing the words out loud made it real in a way she wasn’t prepared for. "Liam, I..." She trailed off, unsure of what to say. The truth was, she didn’t know how she felt. Her emotions were a tangled mess of confusion, affection, and guilt. Liam took a step closer, his voice soft but firm. "Ava, I’ve been in love with you for years. I never said anything because I didn’t want to ruin what we have, but I can’t just stand by and watch someone else take you away without telling you how I feel." Ava’s eyes filled with tears as she looked at him. She had never wanted to hurt Liam, but in that moment, she realized that no matter what she did, someone was going to get hurt. "Liam, I care about you. You’re my best friend," she whispered, her voice trembling. "But I don’t know if I feel the same way." Liam’s face fell, but he didn’t turn away. He took another step closer, his hand reaching for hers. "I’m not asking you to feel the same way right now. I just need to know if there’s a chance... if you could ever love me back." Ava’s heart shattered. She didn’t know the answer. She was drawn to Jason’s intensity, his mysteriousness, but Liam was her safe place, her home. How could she choose between the two? "I don’t know, Liam," she whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks. Liam’s expression softened, and he gently wiped a tear from her cheek. "That’s okay," he said quietly. "I just needed you to know how I feel. I don’t want to lose you, but I also can’t stand on the sidelines anymore." Ava nodded, her chest tight with emotion. Liam gave her a small, sad smile before turning to leave. "Just... think about it, okay?" And with that, he was gone, leaving Ava standing alone in the middle of her room, her heart torn between two men who wanted her in completely different ways.
