8: Be Seen Through By Him

686 Words
He stared at her, "I'm here. Thank you." "Ah... Not a big deal. They... Goodbye." Daicy forced a smile and took a few steps back. But Chris didn't move. His gaze didn't shift either. "Don't you wanna ask me something?" His voice was husky from the alcohol. “Or someone,” he added. His words became even clearer in the quiet hotel corridor, hitting Daicy's heart with every word. Daicy was startled. It was as if he could see through her thoughts, just like in their junior high school. In the past, Daicy felt like Chris had a pair of eyes that could see through people's thoughts. No matter what she was thinking, he could see right through it and casually bring it up at the right time. Little did she know this was just because Chris enjoyed observing her. Most of the time, he silently watched her, trying to deduce her thoughts and feelings. "Um...yeah," Daicy nodded, awkwardly tugging at the corner of her mouth. "Come in," Chris stepped back into the room, opening the door for her. The room was still dark, with no lights on. Daicy snapped back to reality and asked, "Are you drunk? Maybe next time..." "No. I'm sober," Chris quickly replied. "Okay then," Daicy said softly. She entered the room first. As soon as the door shut, the lights came on. Chris turned on the lights. He stood behind her while watching her. The room was lit up by warm lights, softening his usually sharp look. She could even see something gentle in his eyes. They sat on opposite ends of the couch. Chris leaned against the armrest, supporting his head with one hand. His hair fell in front of his eyes, obscuring his gaze. Daicy sat on the other end. Her fingers gripped the cushion. Her face filled with embarrassment. She lowered her head, hesitating to speak. Then she heard Chris say, "About Andy?" Daicy suddenly looked up at him, as if questioning how he knew. Under her gaze, Chris lightly curled his lips. His voice was hoarse from drinking. "I thought you wanna talk about the old days with me." His words sounded like sad accusations, but he was smiling, creating an ambiguous air that made it seem like he was joking. But Daicy still panicked for a moment, hurriedly explaining, "Of course...the old days. It's just..." She was not very chatty and her thoughts were always simple. She was not sure if he was angry or just teasing. So she stumbled over her words and couldn't form a complete sentence. Chris looked at her anxious state, and the smile at the corner of his mouth turned colder. Slowly, he turned his head away and said, "Never mind. Go ahead and ask." Before she could speak, he added, "You like him." His tone was certain, not a question. Daicy's heart tightened. She never expected her hidden secret to be so easily exposed by this person. But she didn't want to deny or argue. She stood silent for a moment and slowly nodded. "What do you want to know?" Chris continued to smile, but there was an icy coldness in his eyes. "How... how is he doing now?" Daicy tried to indirectly ask. But she forgot that sitting across from her was Chris - who could see through her with just one glance. "He has had a girlfriend since freshman year. Very sweet couple," Chris seemed completely sober. His tone was calm. Daicy's heart felt like being stabbed — unbearable pain. She had already thought about that possibility but still held onto a glimmer of hope. What if Andy was just busy with his studies? But now... Chris stared at her, capturing every second of her reaction. She furrowed her brows and pursed her lips, clearly very upset. That made him more sober. He was on the verge of losing control. He wanted to vent, to angrily question her about why she liked Andy. But he held himself back, using every ounce of his strength. Daicy quickly composed herself, nodding and saying with a light smile, "Well, I see."
