Callie swallowed hard as she stared at her bedroom door and her hand reached for the knob. She had spent the early morning hours in her bedroom with the door locked and the chest from her closet pushed against it.
She had cried for hours despite how she tired to get herself to stop and to toughen up. But it wasn't Davison that made her cry, it was the fact that he was accusing her of doing that to her mom. She would admit, during that time her sophomore year, she was terrible to her mom, down right vile. But she had been like that with everyone, everyone except her 'friends' at the time. She behaved how she thought she was suppose too.
But when those girls abandoned and humiliated her, it had been her mom there to pick up the pieces. It had been the woman who had raised her who was there for her like she had always been, no grudges no judgements. The woman hadn't even brought it up again beyond that time. They had moved on from it.
Now it was being thrown back in her face and exaggerated by someone who hadn't even been there to witness any of it.
It was a mess. This was a mess.
Callie twisted the knob of the door and cracked it open only for her to scream a second later. Davison was laying in wait and tried to barge into the room. She quickly attempted to shut the door but he inserted his body between it.
"Davison stop!" She cried out. "Just don't bother me!"
He pushed against the door and she tried to keep him out.
"I told you Callie! I f*****g told you!" he yelled sounding just as angry as he had hours before.
Callie had never been so afraid before in her life. She had never seen him like this before. "Davison. Stop!"
"You took my mom and you talk to me like that!"
Callie sobbed, she couldn't keep him out much longer, she was surprised she had lasted as long as she had.
A loud knock on the door was some how heard over their struggles.
"Dee, Callie, open up, I got muffins!" Anna's loud voice penetrated the door and carried like a blow horn.
Callie had never been so glad to hear that voice. Davison stopped pushing against the door with a growled curse. Callie didn't realize she hadn't shut the door until Davison turned to look at her, a storm raging in his eyes.
"Get the door!"
She frowned at him before slowly moving by him as she made her way down the hall. He followed close on her heels, likely making sure she didn't try making a run for it. She wiped at her face with the back of her hand, trying to get rid of any signs of tears.
"Hi, lovebirds!" Anna sang when she was let in, a bag swinging carelessly from her hand. She didn't seem to notice the tension. "I was surprised when you text and told me to bring lunch, Cals, you usual make some fancy lunch or something." She entered and headed straight for the kitchen.
Callie glanced back at Davison when he laughed humorlessly, at the reveal of what she had done. The phone he had given her came in handy for sure. Instead of staying with him in the foyer, Callie quickly followed Anna into the kitchen and started filling glasses with milk.
"You got here quick." Callie said.
"Well, my office is close to here and I was on my way back from meeting a client but decided to come here instead of going back." Anna flipped her hair. "Oh, and I brought muffins, so this is more like brunch..."
"That's fine." Callie assured. A door slammed someplace in the house, making her jump.
Anna frowned in confusion. "What's his problem? You two fighting? Is that why you didn't cook?" Anna grinned. "Good girl, Cals! Stand up for yourself! Don't be his wife slave!"
Callie chewed on her lip and looked away. "Yeah we fought." She admitted to her own surprise. Anna seemed to finally look closer at her.
"f**k! Are have you been crying, Callie? What did he do?"
Anna grabbed her and pulled her into the living room, which were further away from the bedrooms and looked at her expectantly.
"I..."
Before she could say anything Anna noticed the broken glass that was still on the floor.
"Damn... what happened here?"
"None of your business, Anna." Davison said as he came from the direction of the bedrooms and turned into the kitchen. "What type of muffins did you bring?"
Anna glared into empty space before jumping up and following after Davison.
Callie didn't even bother to follow, instead she looked down when her phone vibrated in the pocket of her hoodie.
She pulled it out and looked at the text in confusion at first.
'Roast Girl, I have something you might be interested in. Time sensitive. Please hurry.'
It took her a minute to remember Aiken after everything that had happened, but when she did she blinked hard.
It was her chance. Her excuse to leave the house.
She quickly stood from the couch and raced to her bedroom to slid on some shoes. She winced when the soles touched the unbandaged cuts at the bottoms. She rushed back to the kitchen but slowed down when she got to the door, finding Davison and Anna in a tense stare off.
"I... am going to the butcher, I forgot something yesterday!"
"What bu-"
Anna was cut off by Davison who was staring at her hard. "Excuse me?"
She met his eyes, her hands shook, but her eyes dared him to do something while his beloved Anna was here. "I have to go to the butcher. I'll be back!"
She went to turn. "Wait!" He called out, voice gruff. She froze before she turned back to face him. He approached her slowly, he was still shirtless and she could see every muscle in his body was tense. Was he really going to do something with Anna here? She started to fear he was. But he shocked her by pulling her into a hug, one too tight and too uncomfortable to be anything good. "You come back now." He whispered in her ear. "Don't make me come looking, Callie." He pulled away and placed a dry kiss on her forehead. "We'll make up when you get back and its not just because I want dinner." He joked stiffly.
No one bothered to laugh. Callie glanced at Anna who looked concerned and a little confused.
"Will you be here when I get back?"
"No, I got to get back to work unfortunately, but, call me later, alright?"
Callie smiled weakly as she wiggled out of Davison's hold. "Will do." She looked from Callie to Davison and back again. "Bye." She waved before quickly leaving.

Callie's nerves were on edge when she made it to the butcher shop, so much so, she walked right by Aiken who was wiping down tables.
"Well, I've always felt invisible, but never this invisible!" He whined with a laugh.
Callie jumped a little and whirled around to face him. "Oh, Aiken! Didn't see you."
"Obviously...you alright?" He asked after studying her face for a second. Callie nodded, not wanting to voice the lie. "Well...I didn't think you would show." He wrings the towel in his hand.
"Why wouldn't I?" Callie asked, confused. "You said you had something to show me?"
"Oh...yeah!" He headed around the counter and disappeared into the back before poking his head back out. "I'll be right back!" He smiled sheepishly.
Callie returned the smile and held up her hand wordless. He was gone again.
Callie let out a sigh once he was out of sight. She thought about not going home, that would be the smart thing to do. The brave thing to do.
Davison had scared her before, but earlier, he had terrified her. If she left, she would have no where to go. If this situation proved anything in her mind, it was that she was weak. She had no backbone and could not stand up for herself.
Where would she go?
What should she do?
