Hearthorne’s streets hummed with quiet magic as we arrived at a grand inn nestled between glowing stone buildings. Lanterns cast warm golden light across the entrance, and the air carried the faint scent of night-blooming flowers and spiced wine. Beta John arranged everything swiftly, and before I could gather my scattered thoughts, we were escorted to a spacious suite on the upper floor.
The room was beautiful, far more intimate than I expected. A large four-poster bed dominated one side, draped in deep crimson fabrics. Heavy wooden beams crossed the ceiling, and a stone fireplace crackled softly. Through an open archway, I could see the attached bathing chamber: a deep marble tub already steaming with hot water, rose petals scattered across the surface, and soft towels folded neatly on a nearby shelf.
“I’ll give you time to refresh,” Kael said, his voice low and even. He hadn’t removed the mask. His piercing blue eyes flicked toward me once before he turned away. “I have matters to discuss with John.”
Relief and nervousness twisted inside me. I nodded quickly, clutching my mother’s wooden box tighter as he stepped out.
The moment the door clicked shut, I let out a shaky breath. My body ached from the long day. The wedding, the emotions, the fear. A bath sounded like the only thing that might ease the tension coiled in my muscles.
I moved quickly, peeling off the heavy emerald wedding gown until it pooled at my feet. The cool air kissed my bare skin, raising goosebumps along my arms. I stepped into the steaming tub, the hot water rising around my legs as I stood. For a few precious minutes, I let the heat soothe my weary body, eyes closed, trying to forget everything.
The sound of the outer door opening barely registered at first.
Then the bathroom door swung open without warning.
Kael stepped in.
My eyes flew open in horror.
For one frozen heartbeat, we stared at each other.
I was completely naked, standing in the tub with water lapping at my thighs, rose petals clinging to my damp skin. His blue gaze widened slightly behind the mask, shock flashing across what I could see of his expression before he froze.
“Senara…”
A startled scream tore from my throat. I lunged desperately for the towel folded on the edge of the tub, water sloshing violently around me. My fingers brushed the fabric just as panic made my wet foot slip on the slick marble. I grabbed desperately for balance.
Kael moved on instinct, reaching out to catch me. “Wait.”
His hand closed around my arm, but the momentum was too strong. His boot slipped on the wet floor, and suddenly the powerful Alpha was falling with me.
We crashed into the tub together in a chaotic splash.
Hot water exploded around us, soaking his shirt completely. I gasped as his massive body landed half on top of me, one strong arm braced beside my head to keep from crushing me entirely. Water soaked his half-open shirt, clinging to rippling muscle.
We were impossibly close. My soft breasts pressed against the hard planes of his chest, my hips brushing his powerful thighs. His scent enveloped me… pine, storm, and raw male heat. My warm brown eyes locked with his piercing blue ones, inches apart. His dark hair fell forward, jaw clenched. I felt every inch of him: the hard ridges of his abdomen, the faint scars, the way his body tensed like a predator ready to strike.
My breath caught sharply.
He was magnificent. Even drenched and caught off guard, his physique radiated overwhelming raw power. Heat flooded my face, unrelated to the bathwater.
A low, involuntary growl rumbled deep in his throat, vibrating against my skin. His eyes flashed golden for a heartbeat, power crackling like lightning. Something possessive stirred in his gaze like hunger mixing with rage at his own weakness. His hands tightened on my waist, fingers digging in just enough to send forbidden sparks through my core.
For a split second, neither of us moved. His hot breath fanned my neck. I could almost taste the tension, the hate, the unwilling pull. My body betrayed me with a shiver, thighs pressing instinctively closer. I fought the urge to pull away or pull him closer.
Then reality crashed back in.
Kael pushed himself up and aside with surprising speed, nearly slipping again as he scrambled out of the tub. Water poured off him in rivulets, pooling on the stone floor. He turned his back to me immediately, shoulders rigid.
“My apologies,” he said in a low tone. “I forgot I was married now. I should have knocked.”
I clutched the now-soaked towel to my chest, heart hammering wildly, cheeks burning with embarrassment and something else I refused to name. My body trembled from the shock, the fall, and the lingering heat of his touch.
Kael didn’t wait for a response. He strode toward the door, boots squelching, leaving a trail of water behind him.
The door clicked shut.
I sank back into the tub, skin tingling where his hands had gripped. He had apologized. He had been careful, even while falling. Could Lily be right? Was he different from the monster in the rumors?
All I could think of was his touch… careful yet firm, leaving me unsettled… and shamefully aware of the heat pooling between my legs. What is wrong with me? He is the enemy. Yet the image of his powerful body lingered, stirring dark, unwanted curiosity.
*********
What the hell was I thinking?
I slammed the bedroom door behind me and leaned against it, water dripping from my soaked clothes onto the wooden floor. My chest heaved. The image of Senara standing completely naked in that tub water cascading down her curves, rose petals clinging to her wet skin, those wide terrified eyes seared itself into my mind like a brand.
Mine.
The word slammed through me before I could stop it. My wolf surged violently to the surface, claws scraping against the inside of my ribs, howling with raw need. I wanted to go back there. Pin her against the marble. Taste her. Claim her. f**k her until that fear in her eyes melted into something else entirely.
I growled low, slamming a fist against the wall. Control yourself.
She was human. A fragile human. The same kind that had murdered my mother during the war and ripped her apart while my father was away fighting their endless greed. I had sworn I would never let one of them close. Never trust one. Never want one.
Yet here she was. My wife. Forced into my life by this cursed alliance.
And every time she was near, my wolf went feral. Her scent, soft floral warmth mixed with fear made my c**k throb painfully against my wet pants. I wanted to bury myself inside her. Mark her. Protect her.
Protect a human? The thought made me snarl.
I dragged the mask off for a moment, breathing hard as I stared at my reflection in the dark window. Golden eyes glowing with barely contained hunger stared back. I forced the mask back on.
She didn’t know what I was. Not fully.
And I wouldn’t let her see the monster yet.
Tomorrow we will enter my territory. I would keep my distance. Stay cold. Use her for the alliance and the heir my father demanded, then discard her. But as I peeled off the ruined shirt, muscles still tight with unresolved tension, I already knew the lie was cracking.
My wolf didn’t just want her body.
It wanted her.
And for the first time in years, I wasn’t sure I could fight it.
