Chapter 19 : Breaking Point

887 Words
Later that night, the storm broke at the Donalds’ mansion. Thunder rolled against the windows, rattling the glass panes like a warning from the heavens. Inside the mansion, the butler directed Kamari straight to the study. The heavy oak doors loomed before him like the gates of judgment. He pushed them open and stepped inside. Mr. Donalds sat behind his grand desk, the glow of his brass lamp casting long, fractured shadows across the study. The storm’s flashes occasionally illuminated the room, revealing the shelves of law books, trophies, and awards symbols of everything Mr. Donalds had built. On the desk, a tablet screen glowed. The video of Kamari and Zora outside the lecture hall played silently, looping again and again. Kamari’s voice echoed in his memory: “She’s my fiancée.” “Sit,” his father commanded coldly, not looking up. Kamari remained standing. “If this is about Zora ” “Shut up.” Mr. Donalds’ voice cracked like a whip, cutting through the storm. He rose from his chair with deliberate slowness, walking around the desk until he stood directly in front of his son. His towering frame radiated authority, but his eyes burned with restrained fury. “Do you have any idea the disgrace you’ve caused this family? Hugging that girl in front of an entire school? Challenging a lecturer as if you own the place?” Kamari’s jaw tightened. “I do own the place. Our donations keep half their facilities running.” “That’s not the point!” Mr. Donalds slammed his palm against the desk, the sound echoing like thunder. Papers fluttered. “That girl will ruin you. She will ruin us. If you don’t end this foolishness now, I’ll end it for you. Do you understand me?” Kamari’s chest heaved. He could feel his pulse racing, anger coiling in his veins like fire. “You can take away everything else, but you can’t take her. I won’t let you.” The room seemed to shrink as father and son locked eyes. Legacy and rebellion collided in that silent, charged moment. The door burst open. Mrs. Donalds rushed in, her face pale with worry. “Stop this! Both of you!” she pleaded, her voice trembling. She looked between them, desperation shining in her eyes. “You’re tearing this family apart.” But the damage was already done. Kamari turned sharply, his footsteps heavy as he stormed out of the study, the slam of the door reverberating through the mansion. The storm outside howled louder. Still in his private study, Mr. Donalds returned to his desk, lowering himself heavily into the leather chair. The video on his laptop replayed once more: Kamari’s arms around Zora, his lips pressing her forehead, his public declaration. The background screamed with chaos, students recording, whispering. Mr. Donalds’ face hardened. His fingers curled into fists. “She’s gaining too much attention,” he muttered to himself. He snatched up his phone and dialed. The line clicked. “I want a full background check on the girl,” he ordered, his tone sharp as steel. “Every detail. Her family, her history, her friends. I want it on my desk by tomorrow.” “Yes, sir,” came the reply. Mr. Donalds leaned back, his eyes narrowing at the frozen frame of Zora’s face on the screen. Her innocence, her smile...it made his jaw tighten further. “Kamari is blinded,” he whispered. “If I don’t act now, everything I’ve built could be ruined.” The call ended, but the weight of his words lingered in the air like smoke. The storm outside mirrored the storm within. “This ends soon.” Back at the hostel, Zora walked slowly down the dim hallway, her shoes clicking against the tiles. She clutched her shopping bag in one hand, the diamond necklace at her throat glinting softly with each flicker of the corridor’s lights. Her heart was torn. Kamari’s kiss still burned warmly against her skin, his words echoing in her ears. Fiancée. The sound of it thrilled her, frightened her, confused her. Yet Charlie’s face lingered in her memory too the way his eyes had narrowed earlier, the strange sharpness in his smile. Something about him unsettled her, but she couldn’t quite place why. Entering her small room, Zora set her bag on the bed and touched the necklace lightly, staring at her reflection in the cracked mirror. The storm outside shook the building, but her thoughts were louder. Why me? she wondered. Why would someone like Kamari fight for me in front of everyone? What will this cost him… or me? Her stomach twisted. She thought of her family back home, of her siblings who depended on her, of the whispers already floating around campus. She imagined Kamari’s world...the wealth, the expectations, the enemies... and felt a shiver crawl down her spine. Zora lay back on her bed, staring at the ceiling, her hand still clutching the necklace. The storm thundered on, but deep down she sensed something else. A storm far greater than the one outside was about to break into her life. She didn’t know it yet, but the pieces of her world were already shifting into dangerous territory… where love, betrayal, and secrets would collide. And this was only the beginning.
