Max shouldn’t have been able to go to sleep, not with all that was happening to them. Somehow, though, whether it was the lulling rumble of the engine or the comforting presence of the big guy next to her, she found herself slipping into a light doze. She only came out of it when her companion moved, alerting her to the fact that they were slowing down.
“Stay alert,” he warned her, a dim figure she could only just make out in the darkness as the truck pulled to a stop. “If I tell you to run, don’t stop to ask questions. Just run. Okay?”
She nodded but then realized he wouldn’t be able to see her well. “Yeah, okay. I will.”
“Even if I’m not running,” he added. “Don’t stop. Don’t wait. I’ll be right behind you.”
“Sure.”
That was a lie. She wasn’t leaving him behind. No matter what.
