The first box was already taped shut when Mr. Daniels walked in. "You're leaving?" His voice filled the hallway like it always did. Too calm. Too sure. Lora didn't look up. She pressed the tape down one more time. "My lease starts today." "On a salary that barely covers rent in Abuja?" He stepped closer. I could smell his cologne. The same one for 17 years. "Lora, this is reckless." 17 years. He said it like he owned them. I finally turned. "I'm 25. I have a job. I have a bank account. I don't need permission anymore." He smiled. The same tight smile he gave the board members, the neighbors, the teachers back when I was 8. "Of course. You're an adult." The word sounded wrong in his mouth. He looked at the box. Books, clothes, a chipped mug my mom used to love. "You'll be back in a month," he said softly. "When reality hits." The door clicked behind him. I exhaled. My hands were shaking. --- Two hours later, I was in his office. Mr. Daniels kept a "family filing cabinet" in the study. Birth certificate, WAEC results, medical records. I needed the birth certificate for HR at my new job. Marketing Associate at a tech firm. My own money. My own life. The study smelled like leather and old paper. Nothing had changed since I was 12 and grounded here for coming home late. I pulled open the second drawer. Birth certificates. Mine was supposed to be in the red folder. It wasn't. I checked the third drawer. Nothing. Fourth drawer. Bills. Insurance. Bank statements. And then I saw it. A manila folder with no label. Thicker than the others. I shouldn't have opened it. But 17 years of "Don't touch that, Amina" made me curious. Inside: legal documents. Stamped. Signed. *GUARDIANSHIP TRANSFER AGREEMENT* *DATE: MARCH 14, 2008* *WARD: Lora DANIELS, DOB: JUNE 3, 2000* *GUARDIAN: JAMES DANIELS* My chest went cold. Daniels. Not my last name. My mom's last name was George I flipped the page. *ATTACHED: LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF Amira George* *TRUST FUND ESTABLISHED FOR MINOR: 15,000,000 NGN* *TRUSTEE: JAMES DANIELS* *DISTRIBUTION AGE: 21* 15 million. For me. At 21. I was 25 now. I turned the page faster. My fingers were slipping. *TRUST FUND STATUS: CLOSED* *DATE CLOSED: NOVEMBER 2, 2014* *REASON: FUNDS DISBURSED PER TRUSTEE DISCRETION* Disbursed. Where? Another document. Smaller print. *PETITION FOR GUARDIANSHIP* *RELATIONSHIP TO MINOR: FAMILY FRIEND* Family friend. Not uncle. Not cousin. Not dad. Mr. Daniels was never supposed to be my guardian. The room tilted. My mom died when I was 8. Car accident. I remembered the funeral. I remembered him holding my hand and telling me "I'll take care of you now." He took care of me alright. He took care of 15 million too. My phone buzzed in my pocket. A text from my new boss: _See you Monday 8am. Excited to have you on the team._ I needed to get out. Take pictures. Think. I reached for my phone to snap a photo of the papers — Footsteps in the hallway. Heavy. Measured. Coming toward the study. I froze. The folder was open on the desk. The drawer was half out. No time to close it. No time to hide it. The doorknob turned. Mr. Daniels stood in the doorway. He was still in his work shirt. His eyes went from me, to the open drawer, to the folder in my hands. One second. Two seconds. Then he smiled. That same boardroom smile. "Looking for something, Amina?" His gaze dropped to the document in my hand. *TRUST FUND STATUS: CLOSED* He didn't move. Didn't yell. He just tilted his head, like he was studying a problem. "Can we talk?" he said quietly. And behind him, I saw it. The front door. Open. My packed boxes by the stairs. My car keys on the table. Run now, or hear him out?
