Katie’s POV
I woke from my nap feeling like I hadn’t slept at all. I feel groggy and I have a splitting headache. I walk into the bathroom and decide to splash my face hoping the cool water will help.
While in the bathroom, I hear a knock on the door.
“David, if it’s you, I don’t feel like talking right now.”
“Not David!” I hear my mom’s voice call out. I run out of the bathroom to see her and my Dad standing in my doorway. I run up to them and throw my arms around them both.
“I’m sorry we weren’t home honey,” my mom says.
“It’s ok, Mom. No one knew this was going to happen.”
“How are you holding up?”
“I’ve been a bundle of nerves and emotions all morning, and to top it off, when the Elders Council showed up, their leader Elder Graham asked ME who killed the Luna.” I said pointing to myself.
My Mom and Dad gave each other a knowing look, then looked back to me.
“Katie, honey. We need to talk.” My brows furrowed at my mom’s tone.
“About…?”
“Come, let’s sit at the table. I’ll get some coffee,” my dad stated.
My mom took my hand and led me to the dining area of our condo. She pulled my chair out and ushered me to sit down.
As I sat down at the table my Dad walked up with a cup of coffee and handed it to me. They are being really weird.
“So, what do we need to talk about?” I said, breaking the silence.
My mom sighed. “Honey, this… this is not going to be an easy conversation.” She said looking at me then at my Dad.
What is going on? I gave her a funny look. My mom is never one to be nervous about anything. She has always been confident. So her acting like this right now is making me nervous.
“Katie, when your father and I first met, I was not a part of this pack.”
My eyes widened. “What?”
“When we met, your father was already Beta to Alpha Michael. As such, he could not leave the pack to come to my home.”
Her home? “You mean your pack?”
“No honey,” she sighed again. “I was not a wolf when I met your father.”
My jaw hit the floor. “You were human? Is that why we never get to see your side of the family?”
My mom hung her head and shook it. “No Katie. I was not human.” I looked at her confused while she continued. “I am an heir to the throne of witches.”
“WHAT???????”
“We are witches Katie.”
I felt all the color drain from my face, and I felt like I was in a furnace. This is crazy!! How could that be?
Mom continued. “Katie, are you alright?”
“How?” was the only word I could say at the moment.
“It’s just who we are honey. We were born witches, and not just any witches. We are of the royal bloodline.”
“If that is the case, why have I never seen you use magic?”
“I use it, it’s just shielded.” My mom said like it was the most normal thing on the planet. “No one in the pack knows who I am, except for your father of course.”
“How is that possible?”
“We never spoke about it. There are people who could take advantage of the fact that I am a princess and next in line for the throne. I don’t want to believe that anyone close to us would do something like that, but you can never be too careful.”
I sat there, mouth agape, as I was listening to my mother. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. How could she not have told me all of this?
“Why am I just finding out about this? Why did you wait so long to tell me?”
My mom looked at my dad and then back to me. “To be honest, I didn’t know how to have this conversation with you. Your father and I figured it was time, seeing as how you will be coming into your powers soon, and…” She stopped.
“And?” I asked.
“We will be having to leave soon.” My dad stated.
I swung my head around to look at him. “Leave? Leave where?”
“Your Grandmother, the Queen of witches, is ill and not expected to make it for much longer. She is trying to hold on until you become of age to take over here.”
“Ok, so my Grandmother is dying, we have to leave to go to her funeral?”
“No little one.” My dad answers.
“Then again I ask, where are we leaving to?”
“You are not leaving.” I looked at him confused.
“Your mother and I are. She will have to take over for your Grandmother when she passes. Which is why you will need to be ready to take over once David takes the Alpha title.”
My breathing stopped and my heart started to race.
“So, will I ever see you again?”
“You can always come see us, honey.”
“Then why have I never met your family? Why was I never allowed to know about them?”
“We never took you to keep you protected. As a child, being young and innocent, you could have said something to someone out of excitement and possibly become a target. We simply did not tell you because we wanted to keep you safe.”
“What about now? Can I go meet your family?”
Mom nodded her head. “Yes, honey. We will leave this weekend to go to the palace. For now, we are needed here.”
My parents stood up when a question popped into my head.
“Mom,”
“Yes baby?”
“What are our powers, being witches I mean?”
My mom c****d her head to look at me. “They vary from witch to witch. Why do you ask?”
I looked at the coffee mug in my hand as I ran my finger around the rim.
“I had a dream.”
My mom dropped her mug to the floor and it shattered.
“Dream about what?” She asked, her voice shaky.
“About the Luna being killed.”
She collapsed in her seat. “What did you dream?”
I told mom and dad all about my dream, even down to the fact that I could feel the damp earth beneath my feet. I told them everything I saw and what l had done in my dream. They both listened intently, never saying a word until I had finished.
“When did you have this dream?” Mom asked.
“The night the Luna was killed, last night.”
“Have you talked to the Alpha about this yet?”
“No ma’am, but I did tell David. I felt like I was going crazy.”
“Come then. We need to go.”
“Go where?”
“To talk to the Alpha.”
