I sat in my chair, completely dumbfounded, as I looked at my mom.
“What did you just say?” I asked completely terrified.
“We need to go talk to the Alpha!” She said as she stood up from her chair and reached her hand out to me. “Come, Katie, this is a conversation that is long overdue.”
I looked up at my mom, horrified, and reluctantly took her outstretched hand as she pulled me to my feet. My dad met us at the door, opening it for us.
“Are you sure you want to do this?’” My father asked her.
She nodded. “We should have done this a long time ago.” She said as she walked us both out the open door. We walked down the hallway to the stairs. As we were going up, David and the Alpha were making their way down.
“James! You made it back. It’s good to see you, old friend.” Alpha Michael said pulling my dad in for a hug.
“I’m sorry we weren’t here, Mike. If we had been maybe this could have been prevented.”
The Alpha shook his head. “I’m afraid that whoever did this would have done it whether you were here or not.”
“That’s what I told him too!” David chimed in with a slight grin on his face.
My dad chuckled, “Like father, like son I guess.” The Alpha and David grinned and eyed one another. “Mike,” my dad said getting the Alpha’s attention, “we were just on our way up to come and speak with you.”
“We were just on our way down for lunch, can we talk there?”
Dad shook his head. “I would rather not if at all possible. The matter we were coming to discuss is quite sensitive, and as of now, I am not sure who to trust.”
Alpha Michael furrowed his brows and nodded. “Alright, James, let’s head back to my office. I will have one of the omegas bring food for us all to the office.”
The Alpha and David turned on their heel and led us up the stairs. I was so scared I was shaking. I knew that I needed to talk to him, but as I made my way toward what felt like the principal’s office, I couldn’t help but tremble even more. And as if he sensed my fear, David looked at me and grabbed my unoccupied hand, running his thumb over my knuckles to assure me that everything would be ok. I didn’t know how Alpha Michael would react to the information he was about to receive, and that is what scared me most.
As we made our way into the Alpha’s office, my mom and I took our seats in the armchairs in front of his desk, while my dad stood behind us. Alpha Michael took his seat with David to his right.
“Okay James, what is it that you needed to speak with me about?”
“Well, it’s more so Margaret that needs to speak than I.”
The Alpha nodded and then looked to my mom. Here we go…. This is it. I am going to be in so much trouble. Mom took a deep breath before she started.
“Alpha, you remember when James and I found each other, that I was not part of this pack?”
“I do.” He nodded.
“Did he ever tell you how we met?”
The Alpha sat quietly for a moment, trying to recall, before shaking his head. “Come to think of it, I don’t believe he has. I know he was away on business, but other than that, I don’t remember any details.”
“James was travelling to different communities trying to set up alliances. Jackie was pregnant with your first pup and was having complications. That’s why you were not travelling with him.” The Alpha nodded, a sad expression written on his face. I didn’t know they had a pup before David, and from the look on David’s face, neither did he. I wonder where they are. “When James came to our village, he had been travelling for a little over a month. He had set up a meeting with my mother and father to see about an alliance. They were hesitant. They did not like to meddle in the affairs of others and asked him if he would stay for a few days to give them time to discuss the matter, to which he agreed. That evening at dinner is when James and I found one another. To say that my parents were shocked is an understatement. They weren’t too thrilled to find out that I would be leaving. However, it is the reason why Stone Lake Pack has an eternal alliance with the Royal Coven.”
The Alpha’s eyes opened wide. “Marge, does that mean…”
My mom nodded. “I am a Princess, and I am next in line to take the throne.”
Crickets… that’s all there was. The silence in the room was deafening. I could see all of the questions the Alpha had sitting just behind his eyes.
“Marge, why have you not come to me before?”
“Honestly, I did not want to be looked at any differently than anyone else in the pack. Then when Katie was born, I wanted to protect her. I did not want her to become a target.”
The Alpha nodded, “I can understand that, but why not come to me? Or even Hank, he would…”
The Alpha was cut off by my mom shaking her head. “Alpha, unfortunately, I do not have the relationship with Hank that you have. Even Shelly and I are not that close. I don’t know how to explain this, but when I am around them, it feels like I have sirens going off. I don’t mean to question your judgement, but I do not trust them.”
I looked at my mom, eyes wide in shock. This was news to me about Mom not trusting them. I know I don’t trust them, or Heather for that matter, but I thought it was just me.
The Alpha sat there for a moment deep in thought about what my mom had just said. I could see the wheels in his head turning. It was as if on some level he could understand where she was coming from. He looked up at the three of us, “Marge, something is telling me that you all did not come up here just to tell me how you and James met.”
Mom nodded. “You are correct. We came up here to talk to you about the next steps going forward.”
“What do you mean?” The Alpha asked tilting his head.
“First, we were wondering if you plan to pass the Alpha title to David when he turns 18?” My mom asks boldly.
David’s eyes almost fell out of his head and his jaw hit the floor. He turned to see his dad in the same state before they made eye contact. “Is that relevant to the conversation we are having?” The Alpha asked.
“Yes, it is.”
“May I ask why?”
“My mother, the Queen, is ill and is not expected to be here much longer, which means that I will have to leave and go to the palace to take over.”
The Alpha thought for a moment on what she said, then looked over at David. “Well, seeing as how he will be 18 soon, and I am not as strong as I was due to losing Jackie, I see no issues with him taking over.” David’s eyes grew wider than they were.
“DAD, THAT’S NEXT MONTH!!!!! I know I have been training, but do you think I will be ready by then?”
The Alpha’s eyes were soft as he nodded, “The fact that you ask that question tells me you are.” David stood there with his mouth agape, trying to search for a reason to give that he was not ready. It is such a funny sight. David is always so arrogant about being the next Alpha, and now that it’s time for him to step up, he’s worried.
“So, what else Marge?” The Alpha asks her.
“Well, as you know, with me being a witch that means it passes on to the next generation. Katie is also a witch, well…half, and if what she told me earlier is true, it sounds as if she is coming into her powers.”
The Alpha looked at me as he asked his next question. “Does that mean she will be having to leave here with you to go back to the palace?” David’s face paled as he looked to me.
“No, sir,” my dad spoke, making the Alpha and David both look to him as the color slowly filtered back into David’s face. “She will be staying here to take over as Beta, provided her and David don’t turn out to be mates.”
It was David’s turn to blush. The Alpha nodded and David smiled. I, of course, was as red as a lobster. For some reason anytime it was brought up about me and David being mates, I blush. I know how our world works, so I don’t know why it happens.
After all of the parentals in the room have a good laugh at the cherry and tomato blush fest, the Alpha looks to my mom and starts speaking again. “Marge, what did you mean a moment ago by Katie coming into her powers?”
GULP!!!!! I now had a huge lump in my throat.
“Well, Mike, Katie told me just before we came up here, that she had a dream last night of Jackie being killed.”
The Alpha’s eyes shot over to me. “Is this true Katie? Did you have this dream?”
I swallowed hard again, trying to remove the golf ball from my throat while praying to the moon goddess to open the ground and swallow me, I nodded. “Yes Alpha,” I whispered.
“What happened in your dream?”
I proceeded to tell the Alpha about the dream I had. He listened intently while I explained to him everything I saw and what I did in the dream. I then went on to tell him in my dream I saw him running toward the Luna as I held her, and that I tried to find the person carrying the light after he left but was unable to find them.
“Katie,” the Alpha said getting my attention. I looked up at him and his eyes were soft. “Why didn’t you tell me any of this earlier when we spoke?”
I looked at the Alpha, unshed tears threatening to fall. “I was scared, Alpha. I thought the dream was something my mind had made up since I saw the Luna and Shelly upset with each other at dinner last night.”
The Alpha tilted his head, “What do you mean?”
“As we were all coming into the dining hall last night, the Luna and Shelly came in through the back doors. Shelly was very upset and went straight upstairs, not even stopping to eat. They were the only ones that came in, and prior to that I had seen what looked like two women arguing out by the lake. With the angle the sun was at, I couldn’t make out who it was.”
The Alpha stared at me for a minute, which made me shift uncomfortably in my seat.
“Katie… are you sure you were just dreaming?”
CONFUSED!!!! UTTERLY CONFUSED!!!!! “Yes, Alpha, I woke up in my bed at 2 a.m. from the dream. Why do you ask?”
“I ask because, as I was running up to Jackie, there was a young girl at her side, and as I got closer she vanished. With it being dark, I couldn’t see who she was.”
I paled and felt bile rising in my stomach. My mom’s jaw dropped to the floor. “What do you mean you saw a girl? Was it me?”
“I don’t know Katie...”
“You didn’t catch my scent?”
“There wasn’t one.”
I looked to my mom for answers, but her head was down, eyes wide, darting back and forth like she was searching for something. “MOM!!!!” I shouted to get her attention. She looked up at me. “What does this mean? Was that me? Why was there no scent?”
She stared at me for a moment. It looked as if she was…SCARED???!!! What the hell?
“Mom, what does this mean?”
“Katie,” she paused. “If it was you, it sounds like a form of astral projection. But you said you even walked around a bit after the Alpha took the Luna, which means that you had to use a protection field to shield you off from being seen.”
Now it was my turn to be scared. “What does that mean, Mom?”
“It means, if that is the case, you are going to have to be very careful. If this is just the beginning of your powers manifesting, you are already more powerful than any witch, at least in this century, that I am aware of. No one, and I mean NO ONE, can know about you outside of the people in this room.”
My eyes grew wide, “What? Why?”
“Katie, if this is true, you will be hunted. If this is true, honey….” She paused. “You will be only the second person to have possessed these powers together. If what I am thinking is about to happen does, you will be as powerful, if not more so, than the first witch who was chosen to be queen.”
I stared at my mom as she spoke. She was so scared.
“Alpha,” she started speaking again. “I am begging you, please for the sake of the moon goddess and my daughter’s safety, please do not say ANYTHING to ANYONE about what we have discussed here today. We will be travelling this weekend to the palace, and I will talk with the Queen’s advisor about this to try and get more answers, but Katie’s safety is top priority.”
The Alpha nodded. “We will keep this quiet. Take all the time you need.”
“Thank you, Alpha.”
“Well, David,” my dad said with a chuckle. “I guess if you and my daughter turn out to be mates, you are gonna have your hands full.”
