Chapter 11
David’s POV
After mine and my dad’s conversation, he stayed behind in his office while I went to go look for Katie. I knew that she was going to have questions, and as far as I am concerned, she is going to be my Luna. I know that we aren’t 100% certain yet, but I am almost certain that will be what happens. In fact, I am certain enough that I have already found not only a new Gamma, but a new Beta. Andrew and Brandon are both strong leaders and are like me when it comes to their tolerance for rules being broken, and people thinking that they can skate the line. We all enjoy having a good time, but work and play have no business being put together.
----Flashback-----
“Asshole!!” Brandon bellowed.
He and Andrew were currently sparring, and Andrew had Brandon restrained in a Nelson.
“HAHAHA, you gotta learn to be quicker on your feet, Brandon!” Andrew taunted before releasing him.
“That s**t hurts, bro! I know there is a way to counter, I just haven’t figured it out yet.”
“Both of you are strong fighters, but there is always room for improvement.” I stated.
“You said you needed to talk to us, what’s up?” Brandon asked.
“Let’s go to the field, too many ears in here.” They both nodded and grabbed their gym bags as they followed me out the door. Once we made it to the field, we sat on the grass.
“Spill!” Andrew said.
“Well, as you both know I’ll be turning 18 soon and will begin preparing to take over my pack…” They nodded and continued to listen, “I am going to be without a Beta and Gamma.”
“I thought Katie was a Beta?” Brandon asked.
“She is a Beta, but if my hunch is correct, she won’t be able to fill that role, because she will be busy fulfilling another role.” I answered.
“What role is that?” Brandon asked again.
“Luna, you dimwit!” Andrew scowled while shoving Brandon. “You can be so dumb sometimes. How the hell do you make straight A’s?”
“Because I’m not dumb as you say.” Brandon defended.
“Anyway…” I interjected. “Getting back on topic, I was wondering if you two would be interested in coming to Stone Lake to be my Beta and Gamma?”
Their eyes popped out of their heads and their jaws hit the ground. “ARE YOU SERIOUS!” They both shouted.
“Very.” I stated calmly. They both looked to one another, then back to me.
“Why ask us? Why not ask someone in your pack?” Andrew asked.
“Well, the reason I don’t ask someone from my pack is because over the years my father has become lax, and I honestly don’t feel that anyone there would be up for the job. Other than Katie, of course, but as I said, she will more than likely be filling another role. The reason that I am asking you two knuckleheads though is because I know both of you come from two very strong packs, your ethics are amazing, and neither one of you are the firstborn. I know that your talents and brains would go to waste if you stay where you are, and I believe that between the three of us, we can bring Stone Lake back to its former glory.”
They both sat there for a minute in silence, thinking over what I had said.
“I don’t want an answer from you right now. I want for you both to think about it, discuss the pros and cons with your families. I don’t want any hasty decisions to be made. Think about it for a week, sleep on it and get the insight you need to help make your decisions.”
They both nodded and we got up to leave the field.
-One week later-
Walking down the hall I am slammed into by a kid not paying attention to where he was going, and all of his books fly across the floor.
“You, ok?” I asked while helping him back to his feet.
“I’ll be fine… Thanks, David.” I nod. As I turn to walk to my class Andrew and Brandon walk up to me.
“Let’s talk.” Andrew says and I nod. We walk back out to the field and resume our positions.
“What’s up?” I ask.
Andrew starts, “I’ve made a decision. I did what you suggested and spoke with my parents, and also spoke with my Alpha, and we are all in agreement.”
“And what was your decision?” I asked him praying to the goddess that he would say yes.
“I’ve decided to come to Stone Lake and take the post of Beta.” He said and I released the breath I didn’t realize I was holding. “My parents agreed with you that it would be a waste if I didn’t put myself to good use. Seeing as how I would not be the Beta at our pack. My Alpha also agrees and has agreed to release me to come to Stone Lake when your announcement is made.” I smiled.
“Brandon, what about you?” He smiled.
“I’m with Andrew! It looks like we are all going to be brothers really soon.”
“I am honored to welcome you both.” I started. “There are some things that we need to discuss going forward.” They both look at me questionably.
“During the time that my dad has been Alpha, he has let go of a few things. The training that our warriors do now, is nothing like what they used to do. Our pack’s security is not where it needs to be, and I want that to change. We still have guards and fighters, but they are not required to keep up their training to stay on in their roles. The pack as a whole has become complacent since we have not been attacked in so long, and we have not had to defend ourselves. This is not just something that I want to change, it is something that needs to change, for the safety and wellbeing of the pack. Both of you come from strong packs, packs of warriors. I would like for our pack to learn from the best, and right now, that is not us.”
Andrew nods, “I have to say that I agree with you. The fact that your pack has not been demolished is a miracle. What would you suggest as far as a starting point?”
“I want to set the first order of business to meet with both of your Alpha’s, to see if we can form an alliance, and request that they send some of the top warriors and fighters to work with ours and see where our men and women stand with their skills. I then would like for at least our top four fighters to go to each pack for more extensive training.”
“David, why has your dad let your training go so much that you feel this is necessary?” Brandon asked.
“I honestly don’t know. It is something I have noticed, and I’m not even sure when it started, but they have just not been where I want them to be. I need to have a conversation with my dad before I go any further with that though. Especially since I am not of age yet to take the title.” They both nod in agreement. “The next thing we are going to do is go over our inner pack laws. Not only are you two going to have to learn them, I need both of your opinions on things that need to be changed. I have some thoughts in mind, but I want to see if the two of you see the same things I see. I will bring both of you copies of the laws for you to go over and study and we will sit down again and have a round table on what we all believe needs to be done.”
“Sounds like a plan. Do you know when your dad is going to hand down his title?”
“No, I don’t. My Dad took it at 25, but I am hoping I don’t have to wait that long. There may not be a pack left to take over if I have to wait.”
-Two weeks later-
“David!” Brandon yelled getting my attention from down the hall. I turn around and face him.
“What’s up?”
“I’ve been going over the inner pack laws and comparing them to some of the laws that Blood Moon has. Going over everything, I have noticed that there seems to be a lot missing.”
“Missing? What do you mean?”
“There are several laws that are normally pretty standard in every pack. I asked Andrew just to make sure I wasn’t being crazy and even he said that they had these laws. I talked to my Alpha, and he told me that 9 out of 10 packs have them, but your pack, it’s like these laws just don’t exist.” He said concerned.
I furrow my brows. “Okay, let’s set a day for the three of us to meet up and work on getting this pack back on track.” He nods.
“I’ll talk with Andrew in the next class and see what day would work best for him. Is there any day that doesn’t work for you?”
“No, I am open at any time. Just let me know when.” Brandon nods and takes off back down the hallway.
I spent the next few classes thinking about the laws that have been changed over the years. I couldn’t think of any that had really been changed. I decided to wait and see what Brandon and Andrew said and worry about talking to my dad about it then.
---Present Day---
The meeting was set for this coming Monday at 9 a.m. However, I haven’t been at school since Monday due to my mom being killed. It is now Thursday, and we are no closer to figuring out who killed her.
My phone buzzes.
Andrew: Hey, where you been bro? Brandon and I have both been worried because we haven’t seen you. It’s not like you to skip.
Me: My mom was killed Monday night. I have been doing my best to keep it together and trying to find out who killed her.
Andrew: OH s**t!!!! Are you ok? Do we need to come and help with anything?
Me: I’m managing. I’m more pissed than anything. Just make sure that you and Brandon are here for that meeting Monday. I found out yesterday that my dad is handing his title over to me when I turn 18. With my mom gone now, he feels that it would be best.
Andrew: We will be there. Let us know if there is anything you need before then.
Me: I will.
I make it down to the gym where I know Katie usually is this time of morning, but to my surprise, she is not here. I see Jamie, her workout buddy, so I walk over.
“Hi, Jamie!”
“Hi, Alpha, how can I help you?” she asked.
Jamie is a sweet girl, curly red hair that hung down to her mid back when not pulled up, freckles across her face, and tanned skin. She was definitely different. I had never seen a natural redhead that wasn’t pale.
“I’m looking for Katie, have you seen her?”
She shakes her head, “Not since breakfast. She left almost immediately after you and the Alpha did.”
That’s weird. “Okay Jamie, thanks I’ll see if I can find her.” She nods.
I turn and leave the gym and go back upstairs to see if she went to her room. I knocked on the door and wait. No answer. I check the handle and it’s locked. I knock again, harder this time, still no answer.
“Where is she?” I mutter to myself. I ran up the stairs and back to my dad’s office.
“David, what’s wrong?”
“Dad, I need the keys to the Beta’s suite.”
He furrows his brows, “Why son?”
“I can’t find Katie, and Jamie, her workout buddy said she hasn’t seen her since breakfast.”
He tosses me the keys and I run out the door and back down the stairs. I make it back to the Beta’s door and turn the key. I opened the door, and everything looks normal. I go look in her room, nothing. Bathroom, nothing. Parent’s room, nothing. I walk out of the condo and go to the library, not here either. I go out to the Lake, she’s not here either. I sprint at full speed back to the house, and back to my dad’s office.
“DAD!!!!!”
“What?”
“Mind link the guards; I can’t find Katie!!!!” I roared.
“Breathe son, she could just be in the library.” He said calmly.
“She’s not. She’s nowhere in the condo, not in the library, not at the lake, not in the gym. She is nowhere to be found.”
I see my dad’s eyes cloud over; a look of concern crossed his features as his eyes go back to normal.
“What?”
“Apparently no one has seen her since breakfast this morning.”
“DAD!!!”
“Already done son.”
“I’m going to help. You need to call James.” Dad’s face paled. He knows how important Katie is to her parents, more importantly what she is and means to the supernatural world, and now she is missing. This is not going to go over well at all.
