The Duchesse looked at her smiling face.
“You remind me very much of what I was like at your age,” she said with a little sigh. “Try to fall in love with your husband, my child. It will save so many problems in the future.”
She moved away, leaning heavily on an ivory-handled stick and Hugo Cheverly looked at Camilla with a question in his eyes.
“What did she mean by that? “ he asked.
“She has been giving me the good advice of one woman to another,” she answered. “It was a secret – I cannot repeat it.”
“But she was telling you that you must fall in love with your husband,” he insisted.
“She said it would be the wisest thing to do,” Camilla replied. “You do not agree?”
There was a moment’s pause and then he said with a strange expression in his eyes,
“I think that – ”
“Hu-go.”
