45 The music was appropriately soft as people filed into the room, if not necessarily sombre. Distantly - as he seemed to hear everything now, a mark of his separation, mentally if not physically, from the world around him - Nathan heard the whispered comments that expressed surprise, and in some cases disapproval, at his choice of music for such an occasion.
