Chapter 7: The Art of the Counterstrike

The private elevator of Cross Industries descended toward the subterranean executive parking bay with a silent, ominous velocity. Inside the cabin, the air felt charged with static electricity. Julian stood near the control panel, his tailored dark suit jacket buttoned tightly, his jaw locked in a rigid line of absolute concentration. He had not let go of Elena’s hand since they left the Victoria Island estate. His thumb rested firmly against her pulse point, feeling the erratic, frantic thrum of her heartbeat as if it were an extension of his own. "Marcus thinks that leaking a fabricated rumor about the Asian acquisition falling through will force my grandfather to call an emergency review before the gala," Julian said, his voice cold and devoid of any emotion. He turned his head to look down at her, his dark eyes burning with calculated fury. "He wants to rattle us. He wants us walking into that charity event looking defensive, divided, and desperate." Elena tilted her chin up, pushing down the nervous flutter in her stomach to meet his intense gaze. She had spent the last hour in the car reviewing the corporate hierarchy briefings Julian had thrown at her, realizing that she was no longer just an innocent bystander caught in crossfire. She was playing a key role in a high-stakes chess match. "And instead of hiding behind a press statement, you're driving right into his domain," Elena noted, her voice steady and clear. "You're going to counterattack before he even finishes setting his trap." A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of Julian's lips. "Never give a wounded shark time to heal, Elena. When they expect you to defend, you strike at their throat." The elevator slowed to a smooth stop, and the heavy steel doors slid open with a soft chime, revealing the underground garage. Parked a few yards away was a sleek, matte-black security convoy. Standing beside the lead vehicle was Marcus, flanked by two nervous-looking junior directors and a public relations operative holding a tablet. They had clearly not expected Julian to descend to the parking level personally—let alone walk out hand-in-hand with the woman they were trying to discredit. Marcus’s confident expression faltered for a fraction of a second as Julian and Elena stepped out of the elevator. The harsh fluorescent lights of the parking garage bounced off Julian’s polished shoes and reflected coldly in his piercing dark eyes. "Julian," Marcus recovered quickly, adjusting his tie with a forced, oily smile as he stepped forward. "We didn't expect you downstairs. The PR department was just reviewing the morning headlines regarding the delayed shipment schedules in Singapore. We thought it best to handle it quietly before the gala." Julian didn't stop walking. He and Elena moved with a synchronized, terrifying grace that forced Marcus and his associates to step back instinctively. Julian released Elena’s hand only to slide his arm securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his side in an undeniable display of absolute possession and unity. "You spend an awful lot of time worrying about my shipping schedules, Marcus," Julian said softly, his voice cutting through the hollow acoustics of the concrete garage like a razor blade. "Almost as much time as you spend leaking confidential board memos to online tabloids." Marcus’s face drained of color, his eyes darting nervously toward the junior directors. "I—that's a baseless accusation, Julian. We're all trying to protect the firm's interests ahead of the weekend." "Are you?" Julian stepped closer, towering over Marcus with an aura of raw, suffocating authority that made the older man look remarkably small. "Because my wife and I were just discussing how fortunate it is that the Singapore logistics audit was cleared, signed, and sealed three days ago. Which means the memo you leaked to the press isn't just unauthorized—it's completely obsolete." Elena watched the color drain entirely from Marcus’s face. The trap had snapped shut before Marcus even realized he was standing in it. Julian hadn't just anticipated the leak; he had used a fabricated vulnerability to draw his rival out into the open. "If you ever attempt to bypass my office to destabilize my family or my company again, Marcus," Julian whispered, his voice dropping an octave into a dark, lethal register that echoed off the concrete walls, "I won't just strip you of your voting shares. I'll make sure you never work in the financial sector of this continent again. Do I make myself clear?" Marcus swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently as he nodded stiffly, unable to meet Julian's burning gaze. "Crystal clear, CEO Cross." "Good," Julian replied smoothly. He turned his head, looking down at Elena with a sudden, breathtaking shift in expression—the cold, ruthless corporate tyrant melting instantly into a man utterly captivated by the woman beside him. "Shall we go, darling? The interior designers are waiting to finalize the floral arrangements for our ballroom, and I refuse to let anything distract from our evening." "Lead the way, husband," Elena replied, playing her part with a cool, effortless poise that sent a shiver of genuine triumph down her spine. As they walked past the stunned group of conspirators and climbed back into the armored Maybach, the doors thudded shut, sealing them off from the outside world once more. The moment the partition glass slid into place, cutting off the driver, Julian let out a low, rough breath and leaned his forehead gently against Elena’s shoulder. Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat as she felt the solid weight of him against her. The ruthless billionaire who had just dismantled a corporate coup in sixty seconds was currently resting against her, his hand coming up to grip her waist with an intensity that felt completely unfiltered. "You were magnificent out there," Julian murmured against her collarbone, his breath hot and sending a violent tremor through her entire body. "You planned that entire confrontation before we even left the penthouse, didn't you?" Elena whispered, her fingers instinctively rising to brush through the thick, dark strands of his hair, abandoning all caution. Julian lifted his head slowly, his dark eyes locked onto hers, burning with a fierce, consuming heat that had nothing to do with business and everything to do with the dangerous chemistry pulling them together. "I always plan my moves three steps ahead," Julian answered huskily, his gaze dropping to her lips. "But I didn't plan on you stepping into the line of fire so seamlessly. You're becoming a dangerous distraction, Elena." "Then maybe you should have picked a less complicated wife," she shot back softly, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. Julian’s lips curved into a slow, wicked smile as he leaned in closer, closing the final agonizing inch between them. "I didn't want simple," he whispered just before his lips crashed onto hers in a fierce, demanding kiss that swept away every remaining boundary between the contract and reality.
