The blinding glare of camera flashes hit them the second the glass doors of the lobby swung open, illuminating the rain-slicked courtyard outside. Microphones were thrust forward like lances, and a chorus of overlapping reporter voices instantly drowned out the ambient noise of the Lagos morning.
"Mr. Cross! Is it true the board forced this marriage?"
"Mrs. Cross, how long have you two been seeing each other?"
Elena blinked against the strobe lights, her instincts screaming at her to pull away and shield her face. But before she could take a single step back, Julian’s arm tightened like a steel band around her waist, anchoring her firmly to his side. His touch was an unmistakable command: Stay composed.
Without missing a beat, Julian offered the reporters a cool, patrician smile, turning his body slightly so his shoulder shielded most of her from the aggressive press scrum.
"My personal life has never been open for negotiation," Julian's deep voice boomed effortlessly over the microphones, dripping with calm authority. "And as for my wife, Elena, she is the best thing that has ever happened to Cross Industries. We ask that you respect our privacy as we begin this new chapter together."
Before any reporter could squeeze in a follow-up question about the suddenness of the union, Julian guided her seamlessly past the barricades and straight into the back of a waiting black armored Maybach. The heavy bulletproof doors thudded shut instantly, cutting off the chaos of the outside world and plunging the cabin into cool, leather-scented quiet.
Elena let out a long, shaky breath she hadn't realized she was holding, pressing her back against the plush upholstery. The adrenaline was finally starting to fade, leaving a nervous hum beneath her skin.
"You handled yourself well out there," Julian noted quietly, loosening his tie as he settled into the seat beside her. He glanced over, his dark eyes studying her face with an intensity that made the confined space feel suddenly electric again. "Most people freeze the first time the Lagos press turns their lenses on them."
"I had a very persuasive coach standing next to me," Elena retorted, turning her head to meet his gaze, though her voice lacked its earlier defensive edge. She looked down at her hands, her fingers fidgeting nervously with the heavy diamond ring resting on her left hand. "So, what's next, Mr. Cross? Do I get to go back to my father's hospital suite now, or are there more boards to charm and reporters to fool today?"
Julian’s expression hardened slightly at her sarcasm, though a flicker of amusement crossed his jaw. "First of all, stop calling me 'Mr. Cross' when we are alone. It sounds entirely too transactional for a couple the world now believes is deeply in love."
"We are transactional," Elena reminded him sharply, her dark eyes flashing. "Let’s not pretend this is anything more than a six-month business merger to save your CEO title and clear my ledger."
In a blur of sudden movement, Julian shifted closer, invading her personal space so fast she didn't have time to react. He reached out, his long fingers cupping her chin, forcing her face up so she had no choice but to look directly into his dark, burning eyes. The raw heat radiating from his hand sent a violent shiver down her spine.
"A transaction doesn't mean we have to play dead behind closed doors, Elena," Julian murmured, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly whisper that vibrated straight through her chest. "And if you want to convince the board—and more importantly, my rivals who are watching our every move—you need to look less like a prisoner and more like a woman who is completely, recklessly devoted to me."
Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. Her lips parted slightly, her pulse hammering wildly against her pulse points. The space between them was so narrow she could feel the heat of his breath against her skin, intoxicating and terrifying all at once.
"And what if I can't fake that?" she whispered, her voice barely louder than a sigh.
Julian’s gaze dropped slowly to her lips before snapping back to her eyes, a dangerous, possessive fire burning in the dark depths.
"Then I’ll just have to teach you," he breathed against her mouth.
Before he could close the final distance, the partition glass between the front cabin and the back slid open with a soft click, shattering the spell.
"Sir," the driver’s voice called out cautiously from the front. "We've arrived at the Victoria Island residence."
Julian didn't pull away immediately. He held her gaze for one agonizingly long second longer, his thumb lightly brushing across her lower lip before he finally retreated, settling back against his side of the car as if nothing had happened.
"Welcome home, Mrs. Cross," Julian said smoothly, his mask of icy control sliding effortlessly back into place as the Maybach glided through the towering wrought-iron gates of a sprawling, ultra-modern luxury estate overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Elena stared out the window at the massive, intimidating mansion, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She had survived the first day, but as the heavy front doors of the estate opened to welcome them inside, she realized the real trap had only just begun.
