“Now,” he said, breathing hard, “we’re going to see if you have learned anything about obedience. Open your legs.” Caroline pleaded, but in vain. Could she do it? Could she willingly lay herself open to such cruelty? “I see you have learned very little,” the man said. His voice was calm now, but menacing. “I shall have to adopt more persuasive methods.” For a moment she didn’t know what he intended. But then she felt her ankles being tied, and pulled apart. Her legs were held open, utterly defenceless. Her heart was full of dread. “I promise you that when I come to untie your legs, you will hold them open on my instruction, no matter what is done to you.
