True to his word, he took me away right under Dylan's stormy gaze. In the car, his hand clamped over mine, warmth bleeding into my skin. I swallowed hard. "Lucas, I..." He turned, fingers brushing through my hair with unexpected gentleness. "Hmm?" "I can't marry you." "Pull over!" The command cracked like a whip. The cozy atmosphere shattered into icy silence. His expression hardened—suddenly we might as well have been standing at the altar. But he wasn't angry. He was waiting. I pressed a hand to my stomach, the words barely escaping. "I'm missing a kidney." My throat closed. "Would you... still want me?" I searched his face. For three heartbeats, he didn't move. Then... He wrenched at my blouse. "Stop!" I twisted toward the driver's seat, face burning. But Lucas didn't listen.
