SEVEN
DAMON
I took a huge breath immediately I got into the elevator. I didn’t press any buttons right away as I just stood there in that small metal
box, staring at my own reflection in the polished walls as I tried to make sense of everything that had just happened right now.
In all honesty, she had been the last person I had expected to see when I walked into the law firm today. To think I actually had been trying my best to get her out of my mind all day and then like the universe was playing a sick joke on me, there she was.
Lily.
Her name echoed in my head like it had taken up permanent residence there. It made me smile even now, as I stood there. To think I had walked into that meeting with no high hopes. A lot of the other lawyers who I had talked to about my case were not exactly eager about it, even though none of them expressly said that, but I could see it in their eyes. That was like a gift of mine, right from when I was young I had always been able to gauge exactly what a person was thinking in their head just by looking right through their eyes.
For the first time since I had started looking for a lawyer that would actually represent me, it looked like I had finally been met with one who could actually put aside their feelings about what I and the club did and looked at things objectively. This was all a business at the end of the day and the truth of the matter was that someone had to do it.
And to think that of all people, it was her.
I could still see the look on her face when our eyes clashed just now. It was like she had seen a ghost. Years in dangerous territories had taught me well how to mask my reactions about things like this. No one in that room would have guessed that the sight of her had knocked the air right out of my lungs just as it had for her.
A smile formed on my face as I could feel how truly thrilling all of this was for me.
When I had walked into the room that morning and not seen her, I had told myself that some people were meant to pass briefly through and the truth of the matter was that I never actually thought I would see her again.
I could even picture her now without exactly meaning to. That short skirt that she had been wearing and the way that it had hugged her hips when she shifted in the chair. The way she had avoided my eyes over and over again.
My head drifted back to the night before and I could picture her standing right in front of me, stark naked. Yes, she had been drunk, but I could still feel that boldness echoing right through her as she asked me to f**k her.
God, I had wanted her.
I had wanted to lay her right there on the table and plunge deep into her. Even now, I could picture her moans filling up the entire space and I wanted that.
So, why the f**k had I not taken her?
Any other night I would have done it with no hesitation whatsoever, but I had stopped myself that night. I had walked away. It was a thought which had echoed in my head all day and I still was not able to make sense of it.
“Hold the door!” A voice yelled, snapping me out of my thoughts.
I didn’t make any move to hold the elevator. I actually wanted the doors to close because I really wanted the quiet. I wanted to be alone with the mess in my head.
A hand slammed between the doors just before they could shut and I let out a slight sigh.
You don’t always get what you want afterall.
“I told you to hold the damn…”
I looked up at that moment as I desperately wanted whoever the f**k this was to complete that sentence, but he never did. On seeing him, I knew exactly why he didn’t.
“Well,” I said mildly, tilting my head slightly as I stared right at Jamie who was still standing there in shock. “This day just keeps getting more interesting.”
“What the f**k are you doing here?” he demanded as he managed to get a hold of himself.
I could hear the hostility in his voice and I could see it in his eyes as well. That look of contempt and resentment which he had on his face, there was something about it that made me smile.
“Mr Lancaster,” I said smoothly. “What a pleasant surprise.”
I could see his jaw tighten up immediately as my words seemed to fuel his anger even more.
“Don’t f*****g joke with me. Did you follow me here?” he asked, his voice slightly raised, “Answer the question. How did you know my workplace?”
“I could ask you the same thing.” I said, as I doubled down.
“I hope you are not getting any funny ideas or anything because I work here and I am a f*****g lawyer” he snapped at me, “I thought your club was all about secrecy and confidentiality.”
The words had left his mouth before he could stop them and I could see the moment he realized that it was a mistake for him to disclose that much about himself, especially to me.
I chuckled softly, as it clicked in my head at that moment that they both worked in the same firm, in the same building. That was no doubt how they had met. That actually explained a great deal because I had wondered how someone like him had ended up engaged to someone like her who was miles above his league.
“Don’t flatter yourself Mr Lancaster, I am here for myself,” I finally said, “Although now that I have seen you…”
Without so much as a warning, I grabbed him by his collar before he could even react and slammed him right against the elevator wall.
He was visibly in shock by this act and I could see all of that initial bravado of his begin to shrink away and there I was face to face with something that I had become very familiar with all of these years.
Fear.
“What… what are you doing?” he said, still trembling, as there was confusion all over his face.
“I remember that the last time we saw, I asked you to do something.” I said,
He looked at me with confusion, but I could tell he knew exactly what I was talking about.
“I told you to speak to her,” I continued, “Not break her heart, you cowardly screwup of a man.”
His eyes widened up immediately at this,
“How do you know about that?”
“If I wasn’t already in a tight corner with everything going on, I would break your f*****g jaw right here and leave you to bleed out on this f*****g floor.”
From the look I had on my face he could tell that I wasn’t messing around.
“I… I…” he began to stutter, but the mere sight of him made my skin crawl frantically.
“Get the f**k out.” I said, my voice was calm but not any less threatening than it had been just a minute ago.
I watched as he frantically pressed the buttons on the elevator door and it finally opened up as he scampered out.
He took one last look at me and I waved, just as the elevator doors shut.
