LILY When I opened my eyes, I wasn’t sure where I was and I had the craziest headache. I groaned and closed my eyes again to better orient myself. Where was I? The answer to that question soon came to me slapping me awake with so much force that my eyes spurn. This was the room of the stranger that helped me… Damon? Jamie broke up with me and I came here. I stared at the empty bottle of whiskey and then at my naked body. I gasped, climbing out of the bed with so much force that I knocked down the bottle and stepped into its shards. “f**k” I cursed. Blood stained the ground where I was standing. Where are my clothes? My eyes flew around the room in panic until my eyes happened on clothes hanging in the wardrobe, not mine but they would have to do. I tiptoed to them, wincing as the pain from my sprained ankle and the wound I had just acquired shot up my leg. Where was he? Did we sleep together? Did we make love? It wasn’t possible… I would know… wouldn’t I? I needed to get away from this club… this place… from him. Not back to Jamie… never but somewhere far away from both men. I searched frantically for my car keys, my eyes swimming and my head not letting up on informing me that I was hungover. I could not remember anything asides sleeping and drinking the whiskey. I saw my keys on the floor and grabbed it, reaching for the door. Should I write him a note to thank him? No… I had embarrassed myself enough for one day. The least I could do now is hope he forgets totally about the crazy woman he had helped. I slipped out of the room, back into the hallway and straight for the bar which was empty… thank God for small mercies. I made for the door, the cold morning air hitting my face. My car was still packed in front, untouched. I thought about the clothes I had come in which I did not find one more time before I climbed into the car and drove off. It is over, I thought. I was well and truly done with Damon. … I drove to my best friend’s house. “You look like s**t” She said as soon as I got through the door. “I feel like s**t and I am very much hungover.” I told her. “You need aspirin” She helped me to one with a glass of water. “What happened?” “Jamie and I broke up” “What? How the hell did that happen?” “I will tell you all about it but I need to bath and I need to borrow some clothes. I have this meeting I totally forgot about with a very important client and the last thing I want to do is miss it and let Jamie handle it.” Did I forget to mention that Jamie and I worked together in the same law firm and we would be seeing each other? Fuck my life. Sarah, my friend helped me pick out clothes from her endless supply and some shoes and soon I was looking put together. “You are sure you want to go in to work with everything going on?” I paused to think about it which I did not want to. Going to work will help me not focus on the fact that I had caught my fiance cheating and then he had dumped me. “Yes, I am fine. I will take a break out of work early today and then maybe you can help me move my things from his place?” “You both rented the space together, Lily. If there is anyone who should leave, don’t you think that should be him?” “I do not want to have to live in that place and remember things we did together” my voice shook as I said this. “I understand. Give me a call if you need me and remember you can always decide to leave the office.” I hugged my friend and stepped out to work. When I arrived at work, Jamie was waiting for me and he looked visibly angry. “Where were you last night?” He snapped. “That is none of your business” “It is my business if you decide to take the car and leave me stranded. I had to board the f*****g bus this morning. Do you have any idea how embarrassing that is?” I felt bitter anger well up in my chest. He was far from concerned about my safety and more of the fact that he had not ridden to work in a car but I took a deep breath trying to calm it down before I turned to him. “You seem to be forgetting the car in question belongs to me, bought and paid for with my money, Jamie.” He glared at me and then shook his head in disgust. “I should have known this is exactly how you are, Lily and I am glad I am done with you, crazy b***h” he walked away from me. I stared at his retreating back, tempted to run up to him and pull his hair or better still, throw something at him but I did not. I had work to do and I will be damned if I let him ruin my work life the way he had my personal life. My assistant walked in minutes later with news that the client had arrived and it was time for our meeting. “Please escort him in” I attempted to review the plans I had gone through and commit them to memory. This was a huge deal for the company and my manager had made sure to remind me everyday. The door to my office opened and I rose to my feet. “Mr Steele, it is a pleasure to…” I choked on the rest of my words when my eyes met those warm chocolate brown that was very familiar to me. Suddenly it was almost like a light bulb went on in my head and with it images of me… memories if you will, of me taking off my bathrobe in front of Damon… begging to be f****d by him… being rejected by him. It would not have meant anything if the man standing before me was not one and the same person. Damon Steele.
