Chapter5

Immediately I got out of the taxi, he did the same. He walked over to my driver and told him to wait, assuring him I wouldn’t be long. In the process, he slipped him some cash. I had no idea how much. “What is it this time?” I asked, my voice still heavy with sleep. He was dressed in a long black coat with a turtleneck underneath. Walking up to me, he placed a hand on my shoulder. “I really need your help, Ms. Jin,” he said, then let go. He reached into his pocket and brought out a two-toned tie, black and blue, followed by a pair of shoes with the laces still untied. I can’t decide which tie to wear,” he said, completely serious. I stared at him in disbelief, blinking a few times to make sure I wasn’t still half-asleep. “You called me all the way from my house in the middle of the night for this?” “Not only that, Ms. Jin, you also have to help me lace my shoes.” He pointed to the pair resting on the back of the car. “Oh my God,” I muttered, clenching my fists so tightly my nails dug into my palms. I had to take a deep breath just to stop myself from snapping. “Come on, baby girl, hurry up. I need to sleep, I have an important board meeting this morning,” he said, settling into the back seat, facing me. I said nothing. I picked the blue tie, it looked better, at least to me. So i handed it to him. He shook his head. “What now?” I asked through clenched teeth. “Black is my favorite color, so I’ll go with black,” he said casually. I paused, irritation bubbling up. If he already knew that, why drag me all the way out here? “Just knot it. Let’s get this over with,” he added, his eyes fixed on me. For reasons I didn’t understand, my confidence faltered under his gaze. I looked away, stepping closer as I draped the tie around his neck. I wasn’t great at tying ties, but admitting that felt like surrender. Then, without warning, his hands rested on my waist, pulling me closer until I stood between his legs. My breath caught. I could feel his eyes on me, like he was seeing me for the first time. My hands grew clammy, my movements clumsy with nerves. I hated how he made me feel like that. “Done,” I said softly. He let go of my waist, then took my hand and led me to where his shoes were. His fingers were cool and unexpectedly soft. “Pick the color you think is best,” he said. There was a black pair and a white one. Remembering what he’d said earlier, I chose black. He shook his head again. I nearly cursed out loud. “It’s a board meeting, not a funeral. Why would you pick black shoes when I’m already wearing a black tie?” “Maybe because you said black was your favorite color,” I shot back, my patience hanging by a thread. “I lied.” A slow smile spread across his lips. “It’s getting late, go ahead and lace my shoes.” He handed me the white sneakers, and I took them without a word. Placing one carefully on the back of the car, I bent down and began threading the laces, my fingers moving with practiced ease. I could feel his presence beside me, as he leaned against the car, watching every movement like it meant something. My hands stilled for a split second when his cold fingers brushed against mine. The contact was brief, but it sent a sharp shiver up my spine. “This style is outdated, Ms. Jin,” he murmured, his voice low and teasing. “What am I… twelve?” My jaw tightened, irritation bubbling beneath my skin. Before I could respond, he took the shoe from me and began lacing it himself with effortless precision. I stared at him, my chest rising and falling unevenly. I was beyond annoyed. No, furious but somehow, that wasn’t the only thing I was feeling. “Why did you call me out in the middle of the night for something so pointless?” I muttered under my breath. He moved suddenly. One second there was space between us, and the next, he was right there, close enough that I could feel the warmth of his breath against my skin. My body froze instantly, every nerve on edge. “I missed you,” he whispered into my ear. My heart stumbled. A strange warmth spread through me, quick and overwhelming, like electricity racing beneath my skin. My stomach flipped, my breath catching in my throat. I had never felt anything like it before, and that terrified me. Then he pulled back. A smirk curved his lips, sharp and knowing. “I hope you didn’t believe that,” he said with a soft chuckle. “I’m a very good liar… and I don’t believe in love.” The warmth inside me shattered just as quickly as it had come. “I have someone I like,” I shot back, the lie slipping out before I could stop it. He stilled. His eyes locked onto mine, sharp and searching, like he was trying to tear the truth straight out of me. “Who is he?” he growled, his voice dropping dangerously low. I lifted my chin. “I don’t have to tell you. And I won’t.” A tense silence stretched between us. “You don’t have to tell me,” he said calmly. “I’ll find out… one way or another.” For a brief second, something dark flickered in his eyes, gone so quickly I almost thought I imagined it. Then he reached out and lightly flicked my forehead. I gasped softly, immediately bringing my hand up to hold it, glaring at him. But even as I did, my heart was still racing. He slid back into the car like nothing had happened. As the car pulled away, he blew me a kiss. I stood there, completely stunned. At this point, he was seriously getting on my nerves.
